Any idea how gold chrome finish is done? Please see Yuri's wheels in the link above. I assume it's not actual gold plating (the kind that makes gold emblems fade to dull gold over time).
Is this maybe a gold clear powdercoat or paint over chrome or something? Trying to stay away from actual gold plating (lowrider?).
Wondering because I have a set of wheels I'm restoring and thinking of giving this finish to the faces.
Thanks to anyone who has any info.
if its plated (which is looks like it is) its done the same way they do chrome plating, just with another material that has a gold color

See if there is any one in your area with an Alsa Corp. "Chrome FX" set up.

Thanks for the link and the info but the gold (even the "mirror" gold) on that site looks like paint. Odd since their chrome looks pretty good and reflective.
The criteria would be... could you see your reflection (like you would on chrome plate)
Anyone other suggestions?

I believe if you have an already polished or chromed wheel you can just spray or powder coat some translucent gold over that.

gold powdercoating.... it's the only way I would do it.

Bingo.
Most places in the US won't do gold chrome however.
From what I hear it uses a chemical that most platers won't touch.
I would have them powder coated with a look-alike finish.
It will be a lot more durable.
I painted over mine because the gold chrome isn't as durable as most other finishes, and was peeling.
Both the gold overcoat was seperating from the chrome, and the chrome was seperating from the metal.

If I understand your answer correctly...
1) There's a chrome plate
2) Then a gold-chrome plate over that (which most US platers won't do).
These two layers are separating independently from the face.
I think that answers my old question. Now a new one: Who has the best mirror-reflective gold powdercoat? :)

What about gold anodizing?
I asked a local anodizer about that. He said that cast aluminum looks dull anodized. The faces of the wheels I'm thinking of making gold are cast aluminum.

is this not anodized?

All the anodized stuff i see is on matte texture stuff, but it could be. that looks either polished and cleared (and then polished) or plated to me.
but then again i'm retarded.

at least ive seen a few of anodized pieces and they look translucent if you have chrome under the paint... a friend of mine had some pieces painted in anodized colors and he isnt no pro finished and they still had the translucent effect if you do it correctly i know youll get something close to what you are looking for
