Just curious as to what is acceptable knock levels and what isn't
My tuner told me that there will be slight knock but it needs to be very slight. I've got a Power FC and constantly watch the knock meter, which has stayed under 20.

Just need to know if this is good or if something needs to be fixed.

From the knowledge I have gathered on here, I have heard that at idle when the car is hot it is going to pick up knock just cause of noise and such in the motor. But it shouldnt raise higher the 20. Then as you increase rpm your knock should drop off since it is no longer detecting drive-train noise. But either way i was told that as long as it stays below twenty then you are in good shape. 1. the stock knock sensor is very tempermental, i show more knock when i have a backfire. its known to be 2x as useful as the oem temp sensor guage.
setting up things to read the knock are also kinda iffy in my opinion due to this
2. at different rpm levels you do see different knock levels, at full boost you should see almost no knock (i see maybe 5) otherwise theres issues somewhere. at idle there is probably more knock but still less than twenty (see above though)

Well currently the turbo is blown and smokes alot, so he wasn't really able to fully tune it, just make it safe for driving.
I'm replacing the turbo asap, then going back from a retune.

on start up it goes to like 1-2
driving 5 maybe
full throttle max I've seen was 12

If you are really that worried about it get a wideband. Knock is determined by the voltage sent to the PFC from the sensor itself. Let's put it this way, minimal knock at idle is ok, the higher rpm/load the same knock could cause detonation. You getting .20mv of knock (think that is what it is in) could be a finicky knock sensor. Like I said, if you are worried about it get a wideband.

Yea, you need to get a tune. Like a full tune. The biggest thing you need to make sure is on point is the injector load/delay. Even if you have a some what stable ign/inj map if the load/delay is messed up it will throw a curve ball into it all.

a safe knock level on power FC is around 22-37 under WOT(u will see the numbers increase in 4th and 5th gear when theres a increased TQ load on the engine, thus u may need to change the timing in one of the last columns or so..) anything more than 40-60 id be concerned... if u hit rev limit, of course it will spike hard for a sec..usually it will knock 80 or so when u hit rev limiter... your numbers seem fine...:aw:

Since I've had the new motor in I've been extremely parinoid about the knock, considering I've been through two motors that died because of it.
Yeah the motor seems solid, I let this one warm up until the idle drops, check the oil daily, so we'll see how it goes. This one die on my I'm selling the car and getting a Z,lol

however on my way to get tuned the first time it was high 30s

How are you guys getting a number on the pfc? I have a bar for knock reading. I am curious if my motor is ok. I am in the process of breaking in the engine as it has new piston rings, rebuilt bottom end, headgasket, and headstuds. So far I have close to 220 miles on the motor. My knock bar is about this long _ at most, it usually always stays at a line about - that size. close to 3500rpm, Which I havn't gone over that.

^ Nevermind that I figured it out. In the monitor setting hit the up arrow and it shows all the peaks In case someone else dosn't know in the future.

Anyways the highest I have seen was a 9 after I started it back up ... after it was warm. Usually doesn't go over 6 under noraml driving.

uh oh, my knock on the PFC is generally pretty high under boost. Ive hit up to 155 once. I think it may have just been the gas I was using though (91 octane). Once I throw in 100 octane, my knock never exceeds 30 under load.

Mine spiked at 123 last night at like 6K in 4th. It usually is under 40 but I've spiked at like 70 lately, going back to the shop tonight to figure it out(motor still runs like a champ)

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead

but this knock reading thing beats me as well

i just put in a new motor and had it tuned, it runs well and i don't hear anything audible to human ears but

I get about 15 at normal driving and peaks 70 when ripping it hard

I've researched on many forums and through google and I get different responses from people saying how they never get over 30 and others how they get up to 150 and it runs fine

what's the deal with this really, I'm tuned for 91 octane and I tried putting in 94 and it didn't make any difference. do I need to take my car to a tuner again ?
