ACK!
It melted on a long drive the other day. Totally ruined. So my question is, is this a normal problem with sr20dets? Mod list is basic, boost controller, fmic, equal length exhxaust manifold(ebay brand)
I didnt buy the exhaust manifold, but I wonder if its not good at containing heat, or cracked or something. I dunno. My tuning shop was like you cant change it without redoing that entire side of the engine etc so itd be a huge hassle. But either way it melted my MBC. I think I found one from another s13 ka engine that Im gonna pop on there, which seems to be the way to go. Is it better to just put a z32 one on there? Will it work if Im still using stock brake setup?
So anyways, Im gonna get the Megan Racing heat shield, and then hopefully put it on my car without any fitment issues... I have ac lines running back there but hopefully it fits...
Last question...check out the quote I got from my tuning shop for some work, is it just me or do these prices seem really high....
Install heat shield $45
Replace MBC and bleed brakes $166
Install catch can $95
Install front and rear brake pads $160
Total $466
Seem crazy expensive to anyone else?
Note, thats just for labor, parts Im gonna buy myself.

Was it just the reservoir that melted? I had that happen to me a while back.

My Brake master reservoir caught fire and melted at the track. I picked up another one from a junkyard nearby, off a Q45, slapped it on, then made it back on track for the rest of the day.

in reguards to your last question:
sounds like a lot of labor involved in that quote. national labor per hour charge is $129

Ok cool. I might just go try to find a Q45 one a at a junkyard then. It was just the reservoir. The shop charges 95 dollars per hour, which seem reasonable enough, but then saying its an hour to install a catch can just seemed crazy considering I built and installed my current one in 30 minutes. Only problem is it was just a temp one and Ive been meaning to upgrade for a while.

save your money and do it yourself unless you time is more valuable than money.

do it yourself definitely. it sounds like you have a stainless header. most cars from the factory come with heatshields on the exhaust mani for reasons such as this. SO...
1. you should use some type of thermal wrap (DEI has great thermal products) and wrap your manifold which is commonly overlooked. thermal wrapping is a great mod, plus, i personally love the way it looks. It'll probably stop this from happening again, AND, reduce engine compartment temps. there are really good writeups on how to properly wrap your mani on youtube. if you go this route, get the METAL ties, DEI also makes them.
these are the ties:

if you're not sure what i mean about the manifold wrap, see the below pic:

2. getting the megan heat shield (or make one) is a good idea too. but yeah, your header DEF melted your brake reservoir.
3. if you are using stock brakes, you can just get a 240sx BMC, or the Q45, whichever one you may find.
4. clean off all that brake fluid in your engine compartment because it will eat away at your paint.

Thanks for the great suggestions and reply to all. Think 8 will be enough to wrap the manifold?

Just for future reference the reservoirs from the s13, s14, z31, and z32 are also inter changeable as long as you change the plug for the sensor. I am running a s14 reservoir on a z32 bmc right now works perfectly. Hope that gives you a few more options in the junk yard.

^^i second that. wrapping the exhaust manifold should lower the temp. a lot. if you wrap your exhaust mani and use the MR heat sheild, you should be good. i'm actually going to be doing the same thing. if you want to take it a step further, put the gold reflective heat film on the MR heat shield. Good Luck! :bigok:

get some thermal reflective tape and wrap the plastic resevoir.
then a $6 piece of aluminum sheetmetal from your local hardware store, make proper bends, drill 2 holes and mount it to the powersteering resevoir bracket.
Could also tape the side of the heatsheild with the heat reflective tape. Done Welcome to the good life

Good idea to wrap the brake lines with the reflective tape as well, dont want them getting hot either.

I melted one with my top mount setup on my KA-T. I was over protective and got the Xcessive Manufacturing Heat shield, and used a thremal wrap on it. I wish I never used the wrap, came off a month later and the resivor looks like ass.
Ooops!

i think 8 stainless ties should be enough. i've been planning on doing it and i'm pretty sure while i do it, i'm probably gonna make a mistake, and will have to clip one of the metal ties off. so i THINK when i do it, i'm gonna FIRST use plastic ties to secure the wrap the way i want it, observe, make sure it is secure, then clip the plastic ties off, and secure with the metal ties. but i'm pretty sure 8 of those ties should do the trick. i've learned to always have a backup plan, so make sure your local autoparts/performance parts store stocks them so you can get another in a pinch
