(CNN) -- Five young men died Saturday when the car they were in drove off the end of a private airstrip near Ocala, Florida, became airborne for 200 feet and slammed into an oak tree, authorities said.

"This had to be the worst vehicle crash that I have ever seen during my career," said Randy Robinson, a spokesman for the Emergency Medical Services Alliance with 27 years on the job.

The 2008 BMW was split in two in the wreck, which happened at 3:45 a.m., said Lt. Mike Burroughs, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol Troop B.

He told CNN the victims -- 18 to 20 years old and all from the area -- were declared dead at the scene.

Burroughs said it was not clear how the car got onto the private Greystone community airstrip -- the same one actor John Travolta uses for his aircraft -- but the car was driving north on Runway 36, which is 1.5 miles long.

"It is evident that the driver of the vehicle saw he was approaching the end of the runway," Burroughs said. "He attempted a braking maneuver and the vehicle slid sideways off the end of the runway."

The car flew through the air for 200 feet, he said, and struck an oak tree 15 feet off the ground, splitting the vehicle in two.

Three of the occupants were ejected -- one landing 40 feet away, Burroughs said.

The engine block of the BMW was completely dislodged and wreckage from the car was found over a 200-square-foot area, the FHP spokesman said.

It was not known if the victims were wearing seat belts and the agency was awaiting the results of toxicology tests from the medical examiner's office to find out if alcohol or drugs played a role, Burroughs said.

The airstrip's private taxiways back up to homes in the Jumbolair and Greystone gated communities.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- Florida Highway Patrol says alcohol likely played a role in the fatal crash that killed five young Marion County men early Saturday morning. The car was traveling at more than 160 miles-per-hour on a private airstrip adjacent to a home owned by John Travolta when it flew off the runway and smashed into a tree.

The accident happened around 4:00am in the gated Graystone Community, which is located inside the Jumbolair Aviation Estates, north of Ocala. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the five teens were joyriding in a 2008 gray BMW when they decided to sneak into the exclusive Jumbolair Community.

The community is home to several millionaires, including actor John Travolta. It is supposed to be gated, but Channel 9 found out that people have been sneaking in.

The car was speeding down the airstrip when it hit an embankment, flew off the end of the runway, and crashed into trees about two-hundred-feet from the end of the airstrip. The car split in half, then disintegrated, ejecting three of the passengers.

The victims' friends said the accident happened after a late night party and that the teens wanted to see how fast the new BMW could go. Troopers said 18-year-old Joshua Ammirato was driving the car at the time of the crash. His yearbook picture says he was known for having the "hottest wheels."

Ammirato's passengers were 20-year-old Isaac Rubin and 19-year-old Dustin Dawe, whom friends called "Smiley" because of his humor. Nineteen-year-old James Devon Hime and high-school star football player 19-year-old Jacob Case were also killed in the crash.

Four of the victims were graduates of North Marion High School and another had gone to Trinity Catholic in Ocala. Family and friends were devastated when they learned the news.

"It's just heartbreaking because they are my really close friends," Alainya Frauenshuh said. "They were stupid, that's all I can think about. I don't know what was going through their heads."

Saturday, investigators collected blood samples of the victims to see if alcohol might have played a role in the fatal crash. The victim's friends say they had been at a party where there were several kegs of beer.

"We will miss them, everybody will miss them. They were great people and they were always fun to be around," close friend Britney Palmire said.

Stupid kids with no responsibilities..that's why you don't buy an inexperienced and stupid kid a 300+HP luxury car. You start them off with a slow economy hyundai or honda so they will never get up to speed or even think about getting that fast with their car. Well they learned the hard way and he took 4 people with him.

fucked up way to go.....sucks to hear shit like this since its such needless deaths (not that any death is needed) but so easily avoidable....I can see how it could happen tho, Im sure very easy to lose track of where you are on a runway....even on top gear they have big signs telling them when to brake cause its so hard to judge distances....seriously tho 19 and 20 is way too young to go, and this is also why I hate being a passanger in kids cars goin fast....even if your friends think they know what they are doin when it boils down to it they might not have the skills or reaction time to get out of trouble once they get into it....and at high speeds solid objects dont give way very much.....simply not worth dying over

I have sympathy for their ignorance. I don't think they deserved to die though (not saying you do)
Sad. I can't imagine what that looked like while it was happening.
Yeah, 200 feet is enough time to really realize wtf is going on/about to happen.

when doing top speed runs its important to have indicators on when to brake. When you are on flat land doing 160 + mph you go through real estate pretty quickly, and people misjudge distances all the time.

They were drifting at 160+, shits not for amateurs. Seriously though, that sucks and yeah, they had plenty of time to contemplate their fate while sliding and flying through the air. When in an accident things are in slo mo and plenty of thought processing occurs.

I feel bad for all of them....yes it was dumb but they dont deserve to be dead at 19....also I feel very bad for the passangers, yes they got in the car but they had no control over what the driver would do....who knows if he told them what he was planning or what...and I know Ive been in cars with ppl before who were doing dumb shit and ur just kinda stuck for the ride...I crashed my car and put my gf in the hospital...whose fault was that? mine. No sympathy for my injuries cause it was my fault but all she did was get in the car...and she got fucked up with no control over the situation at all....so it really all comes down in to the driver....I say these kids deserve sympathy...they were young and dumb and now their dead. Im sure if anything like this happened to anyones friends they would not be saying they have no sympathy for them....and Im sure most ppl here dont have friends that would do what the driver did...but being one of the passangers was just being at the wrong place at the wrong time and having too much trust for a friend

WTF are you talking about?

It's one thing to provide for your kids with the things that they need. To provide them with the tools to excel in life.

It's stupid to spoil them with excess. A 500hp M5? does he really need that to survive?

There were kids at my HS whose parents were worth Millions. The kid still drove a Volvo 740 to school or a old sabb every day. They did get great tutors and such. But there parents were smart enough not to spoil them

for the truth- same here

I don't feel sorry for the driver.

I feel moved by the passengers fate. But I would have snapped the drivers fucking arm in a arm bar at about 65 mph if he started racing up to max speed in the fog, while knowing he was drunk (even if I was drunk).

Maybe there were drugs involved or maybe they all were that piss drunk.

He posted on the BMW M5 forum — www.M5board.com (http://www.m5board.com/) — as "AmericanM5," the proud new owner of a 2008 BMW M5 painted Space Gray.

He had a problem. With "everything set to max" — and he changed gear with the shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel — "and I'm going pedal to the metal pushing 140 and upshifting, there tends to be a thud noise with the gear change." AmericanM5 wanted to know if this was normal.

And he added: "Let me say I am a beginner when it comes to high-performance cars as I am only 18, so take it easy on me."

Reality Check
The forum members told him that yes, the sensation of an abrupt gear engagement is normal with the M5's automated sequential manual transmission, but several also took the opportunity to express their concerns.

Wrote one: "It's just disturbing to know...that an 18-year-old who is asking these questions about a 500-horsepower car is driving the same streets I am. I don't have anything against young guys driving nice cars, but an 18-year-old being [behind] the wheel of an M5 is what accidents are made of."

AmericanM5 responded: "I completely understand where you are coming from, assuming that I am irresponsible...that is definitely understandable. I do sometimes make bad decisions but I am young and I do drive safe and I will not endanger the lives of others."

These posts were dated January 25, 2008.

Space Gray
At 3:30 a.m. on January 26, a 2008 BMW M5 painted Space Gray flew off the raised end of a runway at a private airport just outside Ocala, Florida, sailed 200 feet through the air and stuck a huge tree. The impact with the tree occurred 15 feet off the ground. Five young men, aged 18 to 20, were killed instantly.

Members of the M5Board began to put the pieces together. AmericanM5 said he was 18, had a 2008 M5 in Space Gray, and said he lived in the Ocala area. And he signed one of the posts, "Josh."

The driver of the crashed M5 had been Josh Ammirato.

Experience Counts
Apparently AmericanM5 had not been entirely truthful in his postings. The M5 belonged not to him, but instead to his father.

When members of the M5board forum had made this suggestion online, AmericanM5 bristled: "It's mine, buddy. I just traded in my 335i and paid the difference."

Another member suggested that AmericanM5's lack of knowledge about the BMW M5's transmission could be easily explained: "Maybe your two years' driving experience in your whole life is the problem."

AmericanM5 responded: "That could be a good assumption but the fact I never drive a manual car before may be true, but I've been driving for a lot longer than two years, buddy."

Reports indicate that Ammirato had received four traffic citations in the last two years.

Is This for Real?
The crash occurred at the Greystone Airport, which is bordered on one side by Jumbolair Estates, a fly-in community where actor and pilot John Travolta lives; he filed a suit in 2007 to compel the owners to allow him to land his Boeing 707 on the strip.

The fly-in community was built by the late Arthur Jones, inventor of Nautilus exercise equipment. The airstrip is 7,550 feet (1.5 miles) long and is 210 feet wide. Apparently it can be accessed through an unguarded gate.

The five occupants of the M5 had attended a basketball game, and then a party where they were celebrating the 19th birthday of Dustin "Smiley" Dawe, one of the men killed.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that there was evidence of skid marks at the end of the runway, indicating the car had turned sideways before crossing a sloped embankment and sailing through the air and into the tree. Alcohol does not appear to have been involved. The accident made headlines in the Ocala Star-Banner.

A Final Word
The final exchange between AmericanM5 and the rest of the forum members came late on January 25.

Some members wondered if the 18-year-old M5 owner was for real, and suggested that he post some photos of his car. Others wondered why a teenager would opt for an expensive sedan instead of more conventional sports car like a Porsche.

A forum member from Queensland, Australia, applauded AmericanM5's decision to get a BMW: "I would much prefer an 18-year-old with brains to have an M5 rather than spend his money on some other piece of junk that could kill him and his mates in an accident," wrote M5DAL, a forum member since 2004. He continued: "If you crash in a big way, expect to be on the news."

"Thanks, guys, don't get me wrong," AmericanM5 wrote, "I never said I didn't respect your wisdom. Thanks for the welcome, and I am looking forward to getting to know you guys better...and I plan to have all the pics up tomorrow. Josh."

That was his last post.

Ohh..what's with this hostility? I'm just stating that I would start a newbie driver with something slower because you know how tempting most kids and their friends will be to try to max out their car as seen with this kid. Who would ever think to take a hyundai to an air field and max out their car to 160+? If this kid would have been driving an economy car, he would be at home playing games like a normal teen.

Even if I was a billionaire with kids, I would still start them off with a car that isn't meant for racing and won't reach high speeds like the M5. Only smart people with common sense would think the way I do, not stupid people with no street smarts, only thinking of the bling and showing off. Some people may call me over protective, but I would want the best for my kid even if he's driving a low class car.

Anyways, none of this would change a thing, it's both the parents and kid's fault in my opinion.

And what's their to envy? A fucking dead kid that can't get a fucking open casket at his funeral? I really envy that...i don't envy rich people, i'm wealthy enough and still kicking...not like this poor fuck.

I will say that it being the fathers car he should have known the potential....but if hes like most middle aged guys who own these cars...he prob bought it but never really pushed it at all...rich guy who drove it to and from work didnt realize how fast it was so had no problem handing the keys over to his kid...as long as his son was "responsible" and didnt drink and dive yadda yadda

My boy died back in highschool. Had three of my other friends in the car, but they survived. The one that died was drunk, driving a suburban, and it was a rainy night. Speed + Rain + taking corner too fast and ended up flipping and wrappin around a tree down the street from my house. Driver didnt wear seatbelt because he said his father survived without wearing one. Pretty fucking stupid, i love him to death but WTF. A lot of friends still dont learn from that shit, still drinking and driving. People say if I die I die, that would be my distiny or faith, or whatever bs. Fuck that, you control your on future. For you people that don't put on seatbelts because you dont feel confortable with it, think again. Not only are you going to kill yourself, but your friends and families will have to suffer. The decisions you make today will affect you tomorrow.

As for going 160 and killing a car load of people. If any of you are planning on doing stupid shit in your cars, make sure your doing it by yourself. No wait fuck that, dont even do it, my ass might be on the road!

Don't really feel sorry for the driver if he was drinking. Passengers should have never gotten in the car with him.
