hey guys i've got a quick question. one of my friends has a '95 s14 with a vlsd. it's not locking very well, which i assume is the result of the breakdown of the fluid inside the diff. i'd like to know if you can 1)replace the fluid in these diffs to correct this problem and 2)if so, what fluid is recommended? thanks.

noob freebie: yes it can be replaced. See those two plugs on it? On below (drain) and one the side (feed). Takes 75w-90 gear oil. Lot of opinions as to which fluid works best. Personally, I like MT-90 on the tranny and Royal Purple in the diff.
Nest time search, easy questions like these have been answered plenty of times.

Doubt it will help the diff lock better. Just get a welded or a 2-way if you want it to lock.

There is 2 kinds of oil in a VLSD. The LSD oil can't really be changed without taking it apart and is a waste of time. Changing the diff oil will help with noise but not with the lockup, its just time to buy a new diff and get rid of the VLSD. They don't put up with much abuse so be glad it lasted as long as it did.

i knew that the fluid could be replaced, i just didn't know if it had to be some special fluid or if mt-90 would allow it to lock up properly. thanks.

the viscous fluid is separate from the oil you put in the diff
replacing the fluid won't solve your friend's problem. time to get a real diff.

You can replace the outer oil, but the oil that actually makes the LSD lock cannot be changed it is sealed in.
You gotta buy a new LSD, might wanna look into different types of LSD depending on your budget and application for the car.

hes not talking about the diff oil, hes talking about sealed silicone fluid. anyways as far as i know, ive never heard of anyone actually changing the silicone fluid. itll probably be more easier to just swap out the VLSD for a new one.

The diffrential fluid has really nothing to do with the locking of the Viscous coupling inside the diff since it is sealed in its own case, sounds like a worn VLSD possibly.
Here are fluid recommendations below for the Diff and many other things as well:

If that so then yeah, a new diff is in order. *shrug* I've replaced the fluid on one before and it seemed to help.
OP: depending on your purpose, a VLSD is a pretty damn good choice on a daily driver. Now if you want to go drifting on the cheap then welded it is...
