i got this weird overheating problem.. the temp gauge goes up and down randomly. but heres the thing. i tested my thermostat in boiling water and it works. my water pump isn't leaking. my head-gasket has no signs of it being blown. and i have radiator fluid with no leaks. i had the car on an incline and let the cap open while the car was running and see no bubbles.
while driving after a while the temp gauge will go up then hit its highest point then drop back to normal and repeat after like 5 or 10 minutes. when i turn on my heater i barely get any heat. i will only get hot air when the temp gauge goes down back to normal after hitting its highest point. but mostly i do not get hot air from my heater.

i would try replacing the temp sensor as a start.

Sounds like your thermostat is sticking, replace it and see how it goes then. Just because it opens in hot water does not necessarily mean that it works 100% properly.

I have just about the same problem, my question is could it be my water pump because I just changed my thermostat 2 weeks ago and it was ok until about 2 days ago. The hose after the thermostat is cold like its not opening. So I am checking that tonight, but my mind is kinda on the water pump. Is there a bolt or something that leaks out when that goes bad?

Use a Nissan OEM thermostat (Autozone/Pepboys thermostats, from personal experience, are crappy).
Replace your coolant temp sensor.
Problems should disappear (if everything else is up to par).
There's a weep hole on the water pump that will leak if your water pump has taken a sh*t.

You could also have air in your system which could be causing the problem. I know a few people that have had this problem on their 240s

I had this problem on my S14, and it lasted for quite some time.
I replaced the thermostat to a nismo, replaced radiator cap, etc.
It was really iritating me, until I recently replaced the water pump, and wha-lah...
It ran perfect.
Thing is, the water pump didn't start leaking until recently..so I didn't think that was my problem either.
A brand new one from an auto parts store isn't any more than 40-45 bucks. I don't know if our problem is the same, but for the money...its worth a shot.

I know a few people that have had this problem on their 240s^ few? try the majority of 240 owners.
Bleeding out the system is the first thing you should do in my opinion. It's the less costly at first and it take little to no effort. If it's still overheating afterwards then buy an oem or nismo t-stat. That's more than likely the culprit. You could then try the temp sensor or even the rad. cap if it keeps overheating on you.
After all that if it keeps overheating look into the water pump and possibly the clutch fan to replace next.

i had the same issue, but there were 2 underlying problems. My temp guage would spike randomly, that was the guage temp sensor shorting out. The other was my car would overheat if i didnt rev it to 5000 for about 45 sec within 5 min of driving. That turned out to be my thermostat sticking. It would open in boiling water, but it wasnt smooth, it would kinda pop here and there till it was full open.

I had this same problem just a couple weeks ago, bleed the cooling system using a Lisle funnel and now everything is normal.

Oh yeah, I've tried bleeding the coolant with the front of the car jacked up, and then jacked up car up while on an incline. That fucking bubble wouldn't get out, so I bought a Lisle funnel.

try napa for the funnel.... its funny that this post was made b/c tonight was my first "real" time driving my 240 after i put my motor and trans back in. and its symptoms are exactly as are above. im going to bleed it on an incline tomorow with the funnel and ill post on here if that cured it. if not ill be ordering a nismo t-stat. good luck... im hoping all we have to do is re-bleed it....

I bought mine from Fleabay, but I'm sure you could get this from one of the better auto part store locally. Good luck.
