Nice try, but it's only legal to swap a motor that was released in America, and that is from the same year or newer of the production vehicle it's going in.

Isn't there an ethanol scam or something or that sort? To make your car burn the gases more cleanly?

Which exempts your car. Like hybrids? Or is this tiredness pwning me...

I don't know about legality, but yes, you will be smog exempt if you have a 1975 car or older (in California)

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?

Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

* Hybrid
* 1975 year model or older
* Diesel powered
* Electric
* Natural gas powered and has a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 14,001 lbs. or more.
* Motorcycle
* Trailer

I thought it was 1973 and below, but I might be wrong. :<

But yes those cars are exempt from smog checks, if you remove your cats though you'll likely get pulled over a lot since the smell is a dead giveaway, might result in fix it tickets that you can just pay your way out of or contest.

It's 1975 or earlier.
Since most pre-75 cars didn't have cats, or look exactly like earlier ones that didn't have cats, I wouldn't sweat this part too much.
Honestly, I don't know if my '74 Duster ever had a cat.
It's just superloud, spits fire, visibly blows smoke out the dual exhaust, and gets thumbs up from cops when I drive by them.
Seriously. I got a thumbs up from a bunch of cops having coffee outside of Coffee bean this morning.:eek3: :cool:

But the car won't pass smog being as how it needs a motor out of a newer car.

There aren't any exceptions.

I have a 1973 Datsun 510 with a KA-T and ITB's. Many of my 510 buddies have RB's, SR's and even V8's in their cars. It's the motor that needs to be smog exempt, so we all risk being reffed because of our swaps. I know a few guys with pre 1975 cars that have been reffed because of the swap. One guy with a KA 510 had to put all the smog stuff when he got reffed..
