while I've had the car over 2 years now, I started a build thread on a smaller local forum, but never here on Zilvia.
The skinny: When I bought the car it was a KA-T, blown. The body looked straight, I did notice one rust hole, then found more at the bottom of the firewall. I started on the car when I was in college, I had plenty of time to throw at the car then, now I've started my 40/hr a week job, and have less time to throw at it.
The plan: replace the rust, make a car that is track worthy, and an all around badass. I'll go ahead and tell you that the car was originally LHD, the windshield had a leak for who knows how long, and that went ahead and made rust holes in the floor, carpet covered that well so the previous owner didn't even know about it.
I don't have many pics of what I started with, but here's what I do have.

at this point this is all mock up, before the car is complete the car will be stripped of everything that is bolted on to it, notice the floor? that will all be undercoated.

as of last friday the engine is at the machine shop, full head work, here's some extra's I'm dropping off this weekend.

I did the samething to my trunk, and it wasn't much weight AT ALL. Just made the trunk flimsy and make loud sounds when I closed it.
Carbon is definetly lighter.

coilovers? um, yeah, ok.
anyway, to answer questions, the rust has been fixed by combination of cut and weld, and the sections that aren't as bad get stripped to bare metal, ground smooth, and coated in POR-15, great stuff.
hope this gives you an idea, it gets a bit messy, using a chemical based stripping agent, you will need to let it sit for about 15 minutes to penetrate, then scrape, usually I repeat this process 2 or 3 times before it will get the area to bare metal.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_3965.jpg
^ here is an example, I didn't even really think about rust lurking under the surface, I knew there was enough here and there, but when I stripped this area, I found 2 spots, you should be able to see one here, look near the lower right of the picture, there you go, see that? CANCER! after stripping an area I use POR-15 and make 2 coats with that, which turns out something like this (on the radiator support)
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_3903.jpg
nice huh? after that you can lightly scuff the surface and spray a rubberized undercoating on it, atleast that's what I like to do to areas that are not inside the engine bay and visible when the hood is open, which turns out looking something like this (driver side floor pan)
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_3952.jpg
Most of you know that when you buy a front clip the main harness is cut right in half, after re-wiring everything in the back half of the car I found that the only mistake I made was in the rear speakers.
One small problem that I found in putting on the Z32 brakes, was that the American LHD bmc doesn't exactly like the right strut tower, see how the out put to the rear brakes almost touches the strut tower? Instead of getting a rhd Z32 bmc (too many abbreviations in a row?) I think it will be easier, to just make a small hole in the strut tower and run some line from the bmc back into the engine bay somewhere, this will help if I ever decide to remove the bmc, and replace it with another lhd bmc, or at least that is my rationalization.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture462.jpg
that's about all I have for now, check for updates after this weekend.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture684-1.jpg

I don't have proof right on hand, but I can take it off and weight it, I dare say it is less than 15 lbs. now, I have noticed a I have a small leak somewhere, but I'm not sure it is a result from the bracing removal. Then again, I have 3 trunk lids, and I felt like messing around on that one.

actually everything on the diff has been cleaned up, and a Z32 diff rest nicely in there now, I'm getting another sub-frame then having it blasted and powder coated, then swapping it all over.

great build. During my build i went with 6mm sr20de guides and ferrea ss valves on both the intake and exhaust. There is an insane weight difference b/w the sodium filled factory valves and the ferrea 6mm ss. Also how did you go about setting the rocker height? I ended up getting a tool fabricated to fit perfectly inside the lifter bore and provide a mounting point for my dial indicator. It worked out great but it was "one more expense" toward the build.

the pics are literally from a few hours ago, the lifters haven't been installed yet, my friend owns the machine shop that is doing all the work and has been in the business for more than 16 years, when it comes to those details I simply don't ask questions and trust the pro.

I know exactly what you mean, I've learned alot thru this so far, to HP Engines credit they have build many Honda B series n/a and boosted engines the majority over 400 hp, when it comes to V8's I can't even begin to tell you the depth they've gone into, as far as SR's go I think they have done 10 so far. I know last time I was there they had an all aluminum 460 cu. in. Ford block that was build for 1200hp doing one 1/4 mile at the time, and my piss ass 4 cylinder isn't much compared to that, granted they are completely different engines. Thanks for the input!

thought I would post an update of the progress I made last weekend, at some point the whole car will look like this.

above: no the jack isn't touching the car, theres a jack stand on the rear sub-frame.

just attempting to assert any kind of flex on the Cusco engine mounts by hand doesn't get you anywhere, try that with the old stock mounts, and you get a nice flex back and forth. These things are stout.
gotta swing by HP Engines on Monday to drop off some parts, look for pics then.

looking good. what are you using for a tranny mount? that is one thing i never understood about kazama/cusco mounts; they don't sell a tranny mount. that is why i went with the peak performance mount kit. i got all three mounts and i have been nothing but impressed will all the peak stuff i have experience with.
onehundredoctane
02-17-2008, 06:47 PM
I'm acutally doing the peak performance mount, just haven't got it yet.
as for sanding? that takes too long, alot of dust, and requires eye and respiratory protection, on the other hand chemical stripping, that doesn't really require so much of the eye protection (although I should), but the smell does attack your lungs, I have found a few rust places under the factory primer, further proof that it's a good idea.

get a one time use (or replaceable element one if you will be doing a lot with it) respirator. when its cold outside and i have my garage door shut, i put on my mask if i am spray painting or even brake cleaning parts and all i breathe is fresh air. it is definitely worth the $15-20. i bought mine at menards (a home depot/lowes style store here) and have worn it to prime my car and for other random dusty/smelly tasks and it still flows good.

does your knee hit the hydro ebrake handle ever? i think mine would just based on me thinking about how i drive. i like the way parts shop max installed theirs on their s15 in the radio area. it keeps it up an out of the way. either way, nice setup to both of you.

since I'm the only person that will ever drive this car, I mounted the e-brake about 2 inches in front of the seat, when you pull the lever it actually travels between the seat and tranny tunnel, to answer your question, it doesn't seem like the knee thing is gonna be a problem at all.

How did you get the bracing off the inside of the trunk? Any advice would be appreciated! Looks like a great weekend project. Is it glued down, welded? Did you have to put any drill holes? Did the surface come out perfectly flat when you were done? Most of the hoods I've seen de-braced turned out a little lumpy.

looks really good. have you given any though to acid dipping the shell, instead of attacking it with paint stripper. it may cost a little bit more, but what is your time worth??
onehundredoctane
02-22-2008, 11:15 PM
Sicbastard- the trunk lost 5 lbs., 20 lb. before, 15ish after, not really worth it, but I wanted to see, I have 3 trunk lids, so it wasn't a waste. Cut the reinforcement out with a dye grinder, handheld cutting wheel, whatever you wanna callit. It's flemsy, you have to close it with your hand in the middle of the trunk, try and shut it with your hand on the corner and it just bounces back and echos.
scooz14- I'm not familiar with any shops or businesses in the area that would acid dip, if they did it would be costly, and atleast an hour or more away from the shop here. Besides, doing it by hand will make it hurt that much more when I hite the wall at the track. AHAHAHAA.
update time:
as we all know, dirt, oil, debris, all these road elements get trapped in the nooks and crannies of the engine bay and everything in it
before:

^make sure you tape up the injector holes
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4356.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4351.jpg

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4354.jpg
^ and anywhere you don't want clear coat to end up, not that it would matter, but always try to keep things clean!
and after a few coats of clear:
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4358.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4359.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4365.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4367.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_4368.jpg
Now, leaving the intake manifold and water neck bare like this will allow them to absorb oil from my hand while I'm handling them, and installing. Along with dirt and other debris that would have the opportunity to settle into the surface. Hollis mentioned that a few coats for hi-temp clear would seal all the dirt and oils out, and look good to. Now KEEP IN MIND, I don't like bling! This is purely to keep things looking nice and clean! If this was for show, it would have been chromed.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_722.jpg
now, some of you might notice the body work that is still left to be done on the quarter panels. I know, I know, body filler needs to be on bare metal, but there is a new rubber body filler now that is made to be used on top of primer, it's sands easier than bondo and has a smoother finish than bondo, this way the rust is stopped and the metal has 3 shots of primer on it now.
I had thought about doing my valve cover in aluminum paint, but it turned out more like chrome, which I DO NOT LIKE!

To help you out:
Oil Sensor Plug is located on the SR lower harness, not the engine harness.
TPS for a maual tranny vehicle is 3 pin, the six pin you have is for an automatic.
By the way, did you get that wiring harness just from a Nissan dealer? What part number did you use and what did they find out for the application?

seems Courtsey Nissan offers the harness, I got mine thru a Canadian Nissan Dealer who will pretty much hunt down any part you need if you have the part number already.
That's where I'll be getting my Skyline BMC later, I found that the N1 was the only Skyline that didn't have ABS standard (I'm pretty sure atleast) since my car doesn't have ABS and is RHD, that makes a perfect fit for my bigger brakes!
Thanks for the info, I would have been screwed and pullin my hair out later on, thanks for all the compliments too guys! between welds, jumping from one area to another so as not to over heat and warp the metal. Those of you that will, go ahead and hate on the wire welder, the gas welder here at the shop doesn't have a low enough heat setting that won't burn thru the thin metal of the S chassis.

all in all I'm happy with the mild progress made this weekend. NO, there isn't oil in it yet, but I wanted to keep trash out till it gets fired up. It's still taking some time to get all the welds done and repair the rust, and until the engine bay is done with body work and painted the engine will be sit on the ground covered up.

Someone was asking me the other day "why are you only in a couple of pictures in your build thread?" well, when you do all your own work, you end up taking all the pictures unless someone is standing around to snap one off.
Aside from the engine build, the valve cover, and powder coating the wheels (which is going to have to be redone) I've done all the labor on this car myself with the knowledge I have gained working on cars since I was 12 years old (cash that at the bank).

actually no, after I made a straps to hold the fuel cell I noticed the out on the bottom of the fuel cell was on the side, not centered. Personally I think it should be in the center with a small sump. I only paid $50 for the fuel cell, so it wasn't a big loss, besides I sold it.

It's been plumbed into the rear brake line. If you need some more info read further in this post.
ok, well click this link first
http://www.drifting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16787
here's another just for reference,
http://www.driftcentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4374
The instructions that came with it even say:
"input to hand brake must come from master cylinder line that goes to rear brakes."
"output from hand brake must go to rear brakes" and while I haven't made the output line yet, you get the idea that the line going "in" in the picture is the input, the output hasn't been made yet.
I know that it is meant to be a staging brake, but with countless other people using this product for the same application I am, I won't worry.
-To everyone else, thanks for the compliments, it keeps the morale up.
Thanks in part to fakeshemp's help....I just put the same CNC ebrake in my silvia... super easy installation.....and while I haven't tested it out yet swanggggin, the feel just from playing around with it in the garage is sweet.
ONE TIP THOUGH.... don't play with it when there isn't fluid in it! Apparently it ruins the seals, and then you have to rebuilt it. My friend did it to his, and learned the hard way... luckily about a week before I WOULD have started yanking mine after the test fit.

Updates!~!~!~!~!
I spent the better part of Saturday making the brackets that the electric fan bolted to. I know many people use the zip tie method to install their electric fans, but not me. I took the time to make everything replaceable if something ever happens. The fan is a 2400 cfm rating that I got for $40 at the Lowes Auto Fair a while back, cheap enough that if it ever goes out I don't mind getting another.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_4995.jpg
I tried to find my oem radiator brackets but couldn't, so I made one up real fast just to hold the radiator in place.

I also did a mock up of my intercooler, measurements are 30x11x3, it came with brackets for an S13, but they were for the pop up headlight front end. Oh well, you know me, I did some adjustments and made it work. Probably have to go back and cut out the front bumper at some point.

while the car has been 2 hours away from me for a while now in storage at the parents, I don't want to jump the gun, but I might be getting this thing in the same zip code that I'm in within the next 72 hours. The shop I had the car at closed, now I've been talking with the owner of the building and he's agree'd to let me work on my car in the old building, air compressor, lift, engine hoist, etc. Best part about it? The shop is only blocks from my house.

finally snapped a few dank pics of the car today when I was working on it, I removed the intake manifold to take off the iacv as I won't be using it when the car is done, While I was in there I had to snap a pic of the intake runner, still amazed at how smooth it is.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_5110.jpg
the iacv removed, and the hole exposed, I'll be making a block off plate for it soon even though leaving it open won't hurt anything.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/IMG_5114.jpg
for some reason the tps that came on this engine was an automatic, I finally got my 5 speed tps here and after removing the auto tps, realized that the 5 speed version requires longer screws to hold it in, the screws shown here will hold it on, but they only have at most a good turn and a half when tight.

not exactly happy with the oil cooler being mounted with the fittings on the top like that, I would much rather have it mounted with the fittings on the left side that way the feed could be on top and the return on bottom, to me it makes more sense, but I'm still undecided as to if I will change it or not, going to try to make the fitting and hoses soon, but being that I got a speeding ticket Sunday, I'm trying not to spend money I don't have to until I find out what my court cost will be.

I highly suggest moving that oil cooler to the passenger side under the headlight.. depending on how you run your IC piping you will have sufficient room to place it in that location.. keep in mind that fmic gets hot, then your oilcooler, then the air gets to your radiator.. plus you are not running an OEM clutch fan.. If i could i would run it like there is no tomorrow.. too bad they dont work with RB's :-(

I didn't get a chance to mess around with the oil cooler today, I didn't feel like taking the intercooler off to get to it, but I'll mess with it Monday since I'm off work for once.
I've had a RHD S13 bmc sitting around for a while, finally got around to bolting it on until I upgrade to the R32 N1 bmc, I went ahead and bent up some brake lines so when I'm moving the car around the shop I won't have to worry about stopping it before it hits something. The next thing on the list is to make the hand brake functional, as right now it just looks nice.
Start with a 0.95 cent piece for line that is already flared with fittings on it, got it at Advance Auto Parts
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5142.jpg
I always put tape on the fittings, main reason being when your bending up line the fittings tend to slide back and forth, and it never fails to get stuck between 2 bends and end up not being at the end of the line where you want it to be, just something to keep in mind and make your life easier.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5143.jpg
tube bender, check
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5144.jpg
the section I'm bending here will go from the bmc to the rear brake adapter that is bolted to the right side of the engine bay where the frame rails meet the firewall.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5145.jpg
after one more bend, some wiggling and a few hand made adjustments you get the final product
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5148.jpg
then on to bending the brake line that would go to the passenger side front brake caliper, this line I bought at Advance Auto also, but it came up about 2 inches to short, my girlfriend complains I have the same problem in bed. Later I'll come back with a double female fitting and add a little bit more line.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5138.jpg
you can see here where it is just short enough to not make it to the hole, the story of my life.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5139.jpg
the last piece of brake line I also purchased today and it was just long enough to make it to the driver side front brake caliper. Here you see all the brake lines I made up today, pretty soon I'll have the brake system front to rear functional.

a few parts that came in recently that haven't been put to use yet. . .

^16 gallon with foam, dual outlet sump, and a 90 ohm sending unit, even the gas needle on this hunk o' junk will work when it's done, I've already tested it to make sure.
and what's a fuel cell without a fuel pump?
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5127.jpg
1000 gallons per hour might seem like overkill (and it is) but it's a cheap insurance policy imo.
In case you didn't know, I'm somewhat of a Sparco-phile, I have two Sparco Speeds for this car, but they are for the track. I also have the Sparco Lap 3 steering wheel already installed with the NRG quick release and stubby hub. Now to add to the Sparco-philia (is that even a word?) these aluminum pedals are made to bolt over your stock pedals or be your pedals, I opted to mount the pedals and then remove all the unneeded material that was the original pedal that these bolted over.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5130.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5153.jpg
Someone at some point is going to ask "how much longer till it's done?" I've stopped worrying about that, I'm not counting time anymore, I'm counting money. You figure some 1000cc injectors, GT3076R (yeah, I changed my mind), twin scroll manifold with twin wastegates, intercooler piping, downpipe, engine management and fuel cell fittings/ line. I know that's not everything, but it's a major chunk. I'm not even worried about the looks of the car anymore, I just want it running.
Enjoy.

I've read somewhere in a magazine that all Z32's in Japan came with ABS, a friend in Australia also backed that idea. Buying new isn't a problem, I'd rather have a new bmc personally, just a piece of mind.

Rebuilt MC of any kind (brake or clutch) isn't worth the trouble. When I was even poorer than I am now I once had to replace my clutch mc 3x from pep boys. They don't make replacement pistons for mc's they just machine the bore and put in a bigger o-ring when they rebuild them, thus they have a lot of "blow by". I cheap out and buy a lot of shit used/rebuilt/on ebay, but not MC's any more.

after talking to Adam, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have this car put on a rotisserie and sandblasted top to bottom, I'm tired of jumping from place to place and doing small fixes here and there, might as well just have it stripped and start over from bare metal rather than mess with the chemical stripping anymore.

this will be the bottom view of what used to be the spare tire area, I have the piece of metal already cut out for the trunk floor, I'll go back and redo the bracing that was for the old fuel cell later, but now you have an idea of what
I bought these JIC's with the intent of having them rebuilt, but JIC doesn't rebuild coilovers this old anymore, but they do offer a trade in program where you can get a discount on a new set by trading your old ones in,

I've had these S13 Silvia fog lights for a while, thought since the bumper was being test fit that I should see how these might work, here's a picture of the fog light bracket in it's original position
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5176.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5177.jpg
as you can see, the fog light is hitting the intercooler

and the mounting hole doesn't even come close to working
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5178.jpg
but when you unbolt the bracket from the fog light and turn it around it does put the fog light out a bit from the intercooler, and still looks stock too
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5182.jpg

UPDATES UPDATES UPDATES! I'm so glad this car is so close now, otherwise the minimal amount of work I have done to it would've taken months as opposed to hours. Everything covered in this post was done today. Hopefully the brakes will be fully operational by Saturday.
ok so, here is the brake line that comes down from the master cylinder for the rear brakes, notice the fitting that has been flared on and the brake junction that has been installed here, (which I'm using against advice, I've always been told brake junctions are bad news, lets hope not, ok, enough under my breath talk) this modification allows the brake fluid that goes to the rear brakes to go through the proportioning valve then the hydraulic hand brake before then going to the rear of the car
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5188.jpg
the silver brake line up front is the one coming from the master cylinder, the darker one is coming from the hydraulic hand brake and will actually be tied back into the factory line, here you can see it's close, but still needed some adjustments, when it gets close like this a line bender won't help much, just some good ole fashion hand bending, but make sure you don't kink the line,
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/IMG_5193-1.jpg

^hey thanks for the KA block Drew, I have a little something to tinker on when I'm tired of working on the S13 now. Well, I had the brakes working 100% when I noticed 2 small drips on both sides of the rear brake proportioning valve, I had to re-do both flares there, then one flare in the engine bay that went to the left side front. After all that I re-bled the system and now everything is 100% with no LEAKS!
I've decided to ditch the S13 Silvia fog lights, even though all the factory wiring is there, for some reason I just don't like how they look with the intercooler, it was too much work to get the intercooler and fog lights not to touch and after doing so the fog lights just look out of place sticking out that far. Not sure what small project I'll be tackling next on the car, but I'll keep you guys posted.

I'll have to post pics of the black S14 tomorrow, our tint guy has used laminex to "black out" all of the lenses, headlights, taillights, turn signals, etc. Kind of the shiny version of murdered out which is a term I'm tired of hearing already.

maybe a cage after it actually runs, the car is hardly dangerous in it's current state, glad your concerned with my safety but I'm gonna go ahead and pick up a replacement section from Nissan (hook up here in town) gonna reinforce it from the inside so it doesn't get crushed from having a jack under it in the future, having an auto body degree pays off over time.
oh yeah, picking up some tubing for the wastegate dump pipes after work tomorrow, I've axed the side exit idea and I'm gonna keep it simple and just aim them right at the ground.

Ok, I snapped a few pics today, at first I was going to buy the Full-Race mid mount intercooler, but me not wanting to spend $899 for it, I just modified my radiator support so the intercooler I have already bought will work the same way, I got this one for $300 and it has an advertised pressure drop of 1 psi, not bad imo, less intercooler pipe is always a good thing, plus keeping this thing away from the ground and curbs is nice too.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture034.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture035.jpg
^ it looks like it's gonna be close, but I actually have about half an inch between the back of the intercooler and the front of the radiator, so I can move it back when I'm done with all the test fitting of the pipes etc.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture044.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture045.jpg
here you see some of what I have to cut away
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture036.jpg
and from the back
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture046.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture037.jpg
here the left side has already been cut away, you can see the intercooler is actually almost touching the back of the headlight, when I move the intercooler back some that will actually allow me to fit a nice pie cut 90° section in there with no problem.
another shot of my sweet dump tubes

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture043.jpg
as you can see I added a couple of angled cuts to the end of each tube, this will help aim the exhaust that goes out the wastegates out under the side of the car, not that it matters really, but I didn't like the idea of the wastegates being aimed at the down pipe for some reason. I feel like i've hit my second wind now, I can't wait to see the intercooler piping mocked up now, I'm still trying to keep everything clean and low key on the out side, looks like now you won't be seeing the intercooler from the outside of the car, sweet. Some say i need to put more space between the intercooler and the radiator, but we'll see, I'm checking to see what I can do and still retain this set up.

The place I work at was throwing out some dry ice, so I snagged it and chipped up some of the sound deadening,
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture022-2.jpg
after cleaning up the test section, I used some rough sandpaper to knock down the high spots in the residue, then hit it with some etching primer.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture023-3.jpg
I had the welding shop tack my pie cut elbows on my intercooler, I cut a little material off of both the end tanks and the elbows, they clear the backs of the headlights now, but I did notice one issue that will get cleaned up before I have the elbows completely welded.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture026-3.jpg

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture028-2.jpg
the only thing that will have to be done before the elbows are completely welded on, is the small lip you see at the end of this bend, that is the intercooler end tank, and it will be cut and smoothed down.

As far as the rust removal goes, did you por15 everything you stripped or did you use only etching primer in some spots? Do you think it would be necessary to por15 everything followed by rubberized coating or would etching primer and rubberized coating work just as well?
Awesome build man, can't wait to see it finished :D

surface rust = sand to bare metal and etch prime, I'm also doing this to all of the body, fenders and doors.
bad rust = replace metal and etch prime.
I've only used por 15 on the frame rails that I haven't had time to cut and replace yet.
As soon as I get the car in my newly rented garage space I'm pulling the engine, stripping the engine bay and prepping it for paint and then painting the engine bay, installing the engine and trans, then plumbing the fuel system.

test fit of the down pipe with the rest of the set up, Full Race designed the down pipe with a tight fit at one of the wastegates, but it all fits flawlessly! And don't worry, the turbo has a plastic cover over it until I can plumb the oil and water. Anyone know of any companies that make off the shelf hose with AN fittings?

After the fuel cell and fuel lines are addressed I'm going to tear it all apart, strip the remaining body panels to bare metal, prime, paint, and re-assemble. If it were only that easy. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, I'll get some with the digital cam next time.

updates, la la la la la (happy gay mood)
as soon as the AN fittings and braided hose get here I'll make the oil and water lines for the turbo, I highly recommend making these over buying them! I looked around and found the lines I needed for around $275, yeah, not buying it. I've ordered all of my parts and getting out a lot cheaper. Granted it's fittings, adapters, and braided line, not rocket science, but at least this way I can make them how I want and not have to get mad when I buy something and then have issues with fitment later.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture279.jpg
I filled the engine up with oil today, actually put 2 gallons of oil in to let the bottom end soak since the engine has never had oil in it. I took the valve cover off and poured the oil back and forth across the head making sure to miss the spark plug holes. I sprayed some pb blaster down into the cylinders to insure there was some lubrication in there for when I decide to turn it over. Since I don't have the materials yet to make the turbo oil feed line I pulled off the entire turbo set up and plugged the oil feed from the side of the block with a bolt to keep oil from dripping out later.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/S13ness/Picture280.jpg

something I didn't mention last time, maybe someone could clue me in before I start digging, but with all the weight of the turbo, manifold, wastegates, etc, I'm going to see if ARP makes any exhaust manifold studs that i can install, it would really give me a better piece of mind. I've been putting off an update for a while now, guess it's time to post something.
I finally got around to loosening up the bolts on the turbo housings and get everything set correctly, ordered the oil feed restrictor and water in and out fittings and put them on, still have a lot of fittings to order tho. One of the exhaust housing bolts was hard to get to so I modified a cheap open end/boxed end wrench I had.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/turbo3.jpg
then I got my downpipe back from being thermal barrier coated, advertised surface temp decrease is 250°-300°, not bad imo
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/downpipe-1.jpg
I bought this Freddy manifold with the idea that my intercooler piping would be much less complex than with the stock intake manifold, then bought a dremel tool at Harbor Freight and polished the runners and port matched it as well, the next step is to have the outside surface thermal barrier coated which has an advertised internal temp reduction of 15%, and added to the Sikky thermal intake manifold gasket I have will help a bit, in the end this will yield a better finished product than the Greddy is out of the box and for half the price. A Greddy manifold runs upward of $579, my manifold was $180 shipped, the dremel tool was $40.00 then the attachments for the dremel $20, and finally the thermal coating will be $100, making total cost tied up in the manifold $340. That means I saved $239 compared to buying the Greddy manifold and doing the same machine work and thermal coating.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture329.jpg
^ugly castings, but the dremel took care of it, haven't got any good pics yet of the finished product, my camera was being geh when I took this one, whats up with that pink? ugh. Either way you can tell the surface is much smoother than it came. I ended up polishing the runners from the flange back to the plenum.

why would you want to pull the hand brake and push the pedal? maybe i'm missing something since I have very little drifting experience and plan on learning with this car (in like 20 years HAHAHA). On the knuckles you can see I just removed some material, I have it written down somewhere how much it was but it wasn't quite and inch, if you need some done lmk, I can get them done and turned around in less than 2 weeks.

sorry guys, I haven't posted any updates in a while, mainly because I haven't done shit really,
I finally got around to adding the pre-turbo oil filter I've had sitting here, it's kind of funny to think that the turbo cost me half what the car did, something that expensive needs a small insurance policy if you ask me
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/pictrans4.jpg
I also made the water feed line for the turbo as well, had I cut the hose any shorter it may have been too short to get both fittings tight, all in all I'm happy with how it turned out, in the second pic it does look like the line is touching the number two exhaust, final adjustment left a few mm and later I'll ad some flame guard, after the turbo mainfold is thermal barrier coated it will add even less thermal transfer.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/picstrans.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/picstrans2.jpg
I usually wait until I have a small list of mulitple fittings that i need before I place an order, I finally got my 45° -8 for the oil drain on the turbo, after some adjustments to the turbo I found that the easiest way to route this hose is going to be between the exhaust manifold and one of the wastegate dump tubes, kind of a tight space, but later I'll go back and add a bracket to keep the hose from moving around and rubbing against anything

^nothing could be further from the truth.
I hadn't thought of this sooner, but I doubt will help anything. The following is a list of the major items I would need just to make it crank up and run. If anyone has anything on the list, feel free to hit me up. Now I must issue the disclaimer that I am cheap, more cheap than your uncle who steals condiments from fast food restaurants and squeezes them into one big container at home. Yes, that's me. With that said, if you have anything listed, hit me up, we might work something out.
NEEDED
-one piece driveshaft (SR20 S13 with Z32 abs diff)
-740cc or better fuel injectors
-nistune for SR20 OR dirt ass cheap AEM EMS (<---- not holding my breathe)
-Aeromotive or Speed Lab fuel pressure regulator
-everlasting gobstoppers
-jolly ranchers
-RHD throttle cable S13 SR20
-money that you don't need anymore (still not holding my breathe)
-asian whores (between 4'11" and 5'5" please and thank you) (<--- probably easy to find)
-more money that you don't need
-new power steering belt and alt belt (duh, for SR20)
that's all I can think of.

first off, sweet build, but what kind of hp are you planning on running that you need TWO a1000 fuel pumps? just one is supposed to be good for like 1000hp on forced induction engines, and there's no way you'll get anywhere near that with 740cc injectors. seems like major over kill.
and are you planning on mounting the fuel cell lower in the car? or are you just going to keep it up that high?
i ask because im looking at doing pretty much the same fuel cell, just the aluminum version. i was going to mount it down lower in an attempt to keep the weight as low as possible.

No power goals really, just rapid acceleration, quick spool, and pissing off V8's. I caught one of the A1000's dirt cheap and it's brand new in the box, the other was slightly used, but I couldn't pass it up either, I look at it as I have an extra just in case.
If you need a BMC from a skyline I have a R33 GTR and GTS-T BMC you can have just pay for shipping and a starbucks drink for me and you can have it. pm me if you are interested.

Give me a few more months and I'll be wrapping it up, I have a few friends in Wilmington, been there a few times, seems like it's a nice area.
Time for some updates:
-Nistune Type 3 Board is on it's way from Australia, I'll be installing it myself since I am an biomedical electronic technician this shit is a breeze. The board already has a base tune for my application, Pete at PLMS (the people geniuses behind nistune) had to modify a map for 750cc injectors due to the fact I'm running much larger than that (LOL). Should only need a minor adjustment after I get it running.
-Fuel injectors should be shipping on Thursday. I'm going with Injector Dynamics 1000cc top feeds as they are bigger than what I need, this way they will be operating far below their maximum duty cycle.

All in all the fitment was great, I have a few spots where the hood rubs the throttle body, valve cover and the top feed fuel rail, so needless to say some trimming of the fiberglass reinforcement.
Finally got around to making a new radiator bracket, this helps clear the intercooler by leaning the rad back about an inch which is about how far the rad and intercooler are apart. Now all I have to do is copy it and make a second, and cut a little off my radiator hoses. I'm doing this because I don't like running an intercooler down low, too many ways that can go bad quickly, (i.e. rocks, small animals, dead hookers), having it mounted up higher gives me a piece of mind, plus it's stealthy as FOCK! All I need now is a license plate that says "NA KA".

finally got my Nistune Type 3 Board and installed it, I'm sure I've mentioned this already in this thread but it is already mapped (direct from PLMS Developments who is the name behind Nistune) for my 1000cc injectors, the Z32 MAF and all other internal upgrades. In the pic below you can see the 20 pin connector that came with the board, it gets installed on the SR20 ecu so the daughter board can slide on.

I finally decided to get a larger storage unit to work out of, all my spare parts, tires, etc have started taking up so much room I can't work around the car, I was previously working out of a 12.5x25 and have upgraded to a 12.5x40, best part about the move is it was only two doors down from where I was already, so no major moving.
I forgot to snap a pic before I started moving everything in, but you can see it's plenty of room for me to squeeze in 2 or 3 cars bumper to bumper.

Now for some updates, after going to Formula D at Road Atlanta last weekend I figured I should make up for it by getting a little done on the car everyday after work this week. Finally made a throttle cable bracket for the intake manifold, and used the KA throttle cable since it's plenty long enough and tucks into the factory brackets on the firewall. Both the clutch and gas pedals work now, the brakes should be working very soon as well.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture043-2.jpg
installed thermal sleeving over the oil and water lines for the turbo, just need to get some more metal zip ties and that will be finished
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture044-2.jpg
also installed the dash and gauge cluster, the cluster that belongs to the car didn't come with it. I set the odometer to 0 since thats what the engine effectively has on it since it was rebuild. If you looks down behind the clutch pedal you'll notice a nice patch of rust, so much for a "RUST FREE" coupe. . . and NO the bass boat steering wheel will not be staying the car!!!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/Picture045-1.jpg

I actually have a set of what I think are factory side skirts, if I decide to install them it's gonna mean cutting the driver side for the exhaust.
Next I'm working on the fuel pump bracket and fuel plumbing. Thanks for looking.

also got brand new exhaust studs, washers and nuts from Pattycakes,
http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs525.snc3/29865_425855975378_502775378_5846225_1352816_n.jpg
one recommendation I will make to anyone else that decides to replace your exhaust studs with the engine in the car, take off the water neck to get to the number one exhaust stud, leave the water neck off until you get the all the studs replaced (if your replacing all) and have the manifold bolted on completely, then re-install the water neck and life will be much easier! Because my car doesn't have any power steering hooked up I removed the bracket and power steering pump as well to get more room in there and it was still a tight squeeze.

Final install on the manifold!!! Gave it a good rub down with Blue Magic before everything starts getting crowded in there again
got around to ordering Enjuku's Oxygen sensor adapters, this allows you to run skinny oxygen sensor in where a "fat" sensor was designed, OR just plug the hole as you can see I plugged the lower bung until I get the car running and on a dyno for tuning, then I'll install a wideband in the lower bunghole. HA. In my application the bunghole was designed for the "fat" sensor, the sensor I used is from a Z31 turbo and plugs right into the harness w/o modification. The adapters were $19 each, not too bad of a fix I guess.

^OH! I think I forgot to mention that part!
While I started with a rusted out S13 and converted it to RHD, it started to become too much work with all the rust repair, fuel cell install, all the wiring that was still left, it started to get overwhelming. I found another S13 coupe shell in NC and picked it up and I'm still in the process of swapping everything over to it now. This car has a few small rust spots but nothing compared to the RHD. The SR20DET I have had been back from the engine builder for 2 years just sitting and looking pretty waiting for its new home, with all that was left on the RHD I just decided to put it on the back burner and get the SR running ASAP.
Enjoy. . .

I still haven't made any center supports for the upper rad support, but you get an idea of where this is going. I wanted to make sure I could fit the intercooler in then work the supports around it.

this is exactly what I was aiming for, you can't even see the intercooler just by looking at the front end, so most people will suspect that it's an N/A car if they haven't seen it before. Plus its tucked nicely behind the bumper reinforcement too, a much safer place.

although I've made the dump pipes for the twin 44mm Tial wastegates twice already, they are still lacking my personal touch, and since i've swapped the engine set up back into a LHD car the dumptubes I made previously were trash due to the fact they hit the steering column. :thumbdwn
so I came up with this tip to add to the new dump tubes I'll make.

well I got some work done this weekend, heres a quick update.
My friend Adam stopped by to help finish up the radiator support I had started a while back
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/179360_10150126392045379_502775378_8245197_3409891 _n.jpg
the radiator support is done for the most part now, what you can't see in this pic are the supports going from the frame rails to the upper support, there is some reinforcement in there, although it looks like just the headlight brackets holding the top rail up :P
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q239/fakeshemp44/165384_10150126393050379_502775378_8245227_1039100 _n.jpg
The next part I didn't take pictures of but you may be able to see it in some pictures of the car when the hood is up. While making the radiator support and fitting hood, fenders adn the headlights I noticed the valve cover, throttle body and a few other areas were rubbing the hood, not cool. So I took to a cut off wheel with it and now everything clears nicely, although at this point I should just cut all the under bracing off the hood since it's starting to look like swiss cheese.
Then I switched my attention to the dump tubes for the dual wastegates, now I had made some a while back but they never fit that well so it was time to do it right and for the last time,

the tubes are only tack welded now, but you see how much better this looks! The tips I've made are the coolest part in my opinon, rather proud of em to be honest.

are you still running a side exit exhaust? im a sucker for aerodynamics and would love to fabricate a complete under panel or at least the rear 2/3 rd's with a functional rear diffuser which would be possible with side exit.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I need the encouragement to keep pressing on! I think intercooler piping, fuel lines, and some misc wiring is all that's left. If I just had a week off work to spend on it that would be great :(
Tougelove, I am planning on keeping the side exit, I don't know that local law enforcement will like it as much as I do. As far as the under aero, pm me with some specifics if you want, sounds like something I'd be interested in after I have the car running and driving.

For now I'm gonna run a Walbro 255, in the future I'll upgrade the the Aeromotive 340 but right now those aren't so easy to come by. I dropped the tank to clean it out and found that it wasn't rusty or nasty inside at all. In fact, if you only looked inside the tank and not at the outside, you might think the tank was new. After cleaning the tank out I installed it with the new fuel pump and replaced the old brittle soft line going from the pump to the under carriage hard lines. I have a little more wiring to do, fuel lines in the engine bay to finish making, a maf and turbo inlet pipe to make and she should crank up. . . too bad the car is 1.5 hours away and the only chance I get to work on it is Saturdays.
