the Z gets my vote.
edit: but i think an s14a with an SR would cost a little more.

*premptive note* -i'm a broke-ass college kid with $800 to last till mid january..._
i would go for the S14A - SR, for simple reliability reasons
if i were in a different place in my life, i would love the z, but they are too prone to having reliabilty and then repair cost issues

questionable.
I don't think you'll find either of those in decent condition for that cheap. s14a in decent condo will run around 10K. won't make an sr swap for 2K. a ttz in good condo won't cost u less than 14 prolly.
2 things i would really consider are insurance and maintenance. Both of those things will be more expensive for a z.

post-'70s Z-cars don't interest me one bit. Too much weight, and 240SX insurance is expensive enough.

Being a former TTZ owner and hopefully soon to be a s14 owner I will shed a little light on this. Keep in mind I dont yet own an s14 but I am in the market for one. Ok, pros and cons for the Z because thats what I know... Hopefully someone out there can to the pro and cons for the 240SX and we can compare.
TTZ Cons:
*Expensive if you want a nice one
*Dont buy the cheap on because youll spend more than the difference on repairs and updates making the cheap one reliable and nice
*NO aftermarket what so ever, none, zilch, nada, aftermarket for the Z?? Whats that?
*what aftermaret there is, is more expensive than anything you could imagine.. (not really, just exagerating)
*Aftermaket example: Brakes, stock suck, aftermarket are well .. got at least 2k??, Exhaust, cheapest stainless steel exhaust is $750ish before shipping
*HEAVY
*mainenance costs are high
*even if you spend $60k in performance parts and tuning for the car your only going to get 530 - 590 rwhp range, very few have broken the 600rwhp mark without NOS
*engine bay is packed and theres no room to work (however you do get used to it, and you can still get shit done)
*Stock injectors are small, and new ones are $800+
*Stock turbos wont get you into the 400rwhp range
*turbo upgrades acost major $$$$ because you need two of everything
*If your not into working on your own car, you may need som eluck finding someone who will and someone who will do good work
TTZ Pros:
*Great car, fun to drive, gets lot of looks, loves the highway
*Stock tranny can handle more power than the engine will ever make
*LSD
*Very lugurious (SP?)
*Handles well
*Easy to get in the 350rwhp range
*Highway + 3rd Gear = LOTS of FUN, and angry domestic owners
*Reliable
*Take care of it and it will run forever
*Good all around car (touring, track, auto-X, etc)
*Great comunity, Z guys/gals are the best group Ive met, Ive met supra, corvette, dsm, VR4/Stealth, and a few other groups and Z guys are hands down the best
*Doesnt need a body kit to stand out or look good
Thats all I can think of right now I will add mor elater if I think of anything

i really want a low 13 to high 12 second car. and it would either be a 240 or a 300....both are great cars but the z attracts me slightly more. is it even worth getting a na Z?

Worth getting an NA Z IMO no, just because you always going to be wanting a TT. The stage 4 Z can get into the 12's with a good driver. I had a stage V Z that dynod 335rwhp on a 95 degree day and I had trouble see low 13's. Mostly because Im not a good drag racer, but also because the car is super hard to launch. The car gets lots of wheel hop, and does not squat so getting a good start is hard. The best I ever got in my Z was a 13.6 @ 107, yes thats right I had mid 12's mph but only mustered a 13.6. If your looking for a drag car go buy a domestic the Z will never be a good drag car. My buddy has a high 12's WS6 (12.71 is his best) and my Z kick his but over 40mph, and a 60 punch was a joke. I dunno, I rambleing, ask some more questions and Ill be happy to anwser them for ya.

buy a domestic never!! im not a hardcore dragracer or streetracer or anything but a 13.6 is still an awsome number that i'd be happy with. i like a good all around car, speed, suspension, comfort and style.
why does the z get alot of wheel hop? not enough weight in the rear? i figure 300+ horses should beable to break the wheel loose. but then again the Z is a heavy car?

I have to disagree on the no aftermarket thing, being a former Ztt owner myself. Though you are right about pricing!
I agree with you on most of the rest as well - except - they are NOT reliable. Well, for a supercar it is... though the Supra is much more so.
The cars are sooooo different though. After driving a Ztt, and then going to a S14, and driving a few sr20dets and ka-t's, I still preferred my Z by far, though the tossability of the s14 is great!
They are really too different to compare.

Also, the Z is NOT meant for drag racing - it is a highway battle MONSTER. Plain and simple. I was at stage 2 and when I stomped it on the freeway - whoa mamma!
If you drop the clutch at a stop, your car WILL go sideways. Happened to me many times. I had Dunlop sp9000's on my car and they would break loose like nothing.

My response about aftermarket was exagerated a bit. I also am comparing that statement to the amount of aftermarket for the S14. Compared to the amount of aftermarket support to the S14 there is hardly none for the Z, and as I said before what afermarket there is, is ver expensive.
You must of had a Z that was not maiintained very well because the Z is a very reliable car. Keep up with that maintenance it WILL run forever. I know quite a few people with TTZ with 150k+ miles on their car and still running strong. The Z is just as reliable as the Supra, you must have not taken care of your car to have come up with that statement. Yes they do require a lot of maintenace, but it well worth it and it will last.

Hmm.. stock for stock or after 10K worth of mods?
Stock: TTZ
After mods: SR14.
Why? The S14 is lighter, has a butt-load of parts for it, looks GORGEOUS, is easy to work on,and there aren't that many around. While I love the styling of the Z, it's way too heavy, like a whale pregnant with twins!

I purchased my car off the owner of Motorex, and it was pampered. I don't think that the Zs v6tt reliability is as good as the reliability of the Supra's I6tt. There is just too much heat in that packed space. Things get worn fast.
Though I agree that the Z is worth the work.

focal, there is a much bigger aftermarket for the Z than the us spec s14. while greddy has been developing a street legal turbo kit since 400 BC, the 300zx has had turbo kits, intercoolers, interior and exterior mods, and a more knowledgeable crowd. compare 240sx.org to twinturbo.net

S14a
I love the looks, the car is easy to take care of, not that many on the streets. Plus you don't have to mod the body for it to look nice, it already nice in its stock form (with the OEM lip). If you plan on doing any mods you have alot of options to choose from.
IMO it can be a very nice, reliable, fast, sexy, "chick dig it" sports car...all wrapped up in a nice Japanese coupe.

Im not talking US spec ... Im talking in general ... its very easy nowadays to get Japan parts. Heck I can get tehm strait from HKS through my supplier if I want too, or any other brand for that matter. If you just count the states, yes your right, but I was refering to in gerneral. For example you want a suspension for the S14 .. JIC, Tein, HKS, etc ... For the Z Tein ...... um ok yeah thats a lot. I will agree on the crowd .. twin turbo.net is awesome!!!!

The Z gets wheel for a couple of reasons, first and formost is because whole rear suspension sit on a subframe and is connected to the car via 4 rubber bushings. Replace these with some solid subframe bushings and your pretty much set. Also the suspension is similiar to the S14 in the fact it is designed not to squat, so weight transfer is less.
Dont worry about laying rubber .... the Z can do plenty of that. Heck I could break 'em loose in second with ease, all it takes is some power and knowing how to drive a turbo car.

First I want to appologize if I offended you with my comments on my post refering to how you maintaned your Z. I was ina crummy mood when I typed that and did not realize how harsh it sounds.
I guess I kinda see where your coming from. The Z requires more regular maintnence than the Supra or a lot of other cars. So unless your into working on your car regularly keeping things up to date, its not going to last with out some $$ in it. I mean I replaced a lot of rubber hoses thanks to that heat you refered to.
Thats pretty cool getting you Z from the Owner of MotoEex like that. Im supprized it was not modified more, especially coming from someone like that.
From your post above:
If you think the highway is fun at Stage 2 .... try Stage V ... ohh man Ive never been in another car that pulled in third and fourth like my Z did. Heck even 5th pull pretty good once I got above 85 or so.

Lol. No worries.
Yeah, I really miss that pull. I don't get too much highway pull with my wrx. At least, not yet.
The guy from Motorex just used the Z for cruising around once in a while, and did not take out for hard runs. Lol. Thats understandable when you have fixed up R34s in your garage.
