Ok my engine just blew a week ago and I'm trying to find out why.  I noticed that the radiator, thermostat are fine.  The hoses and water pump I still need to check.  Although the plastic overflow tank in the car is worn to pieces.  It actually has a hole in its side from rust.  So the tank can not hold much coolant after all.  So my question is can this simple part not working right cause my engine to overheat?

Very unlikely. If your engine wasn't overheating, i really doubt that anything that concerns the cooling system was at fault.
