i know most of us know how to do this aready but there are still some noobs out there that have no idea how to do this simple swap so, i decided to post a swap instruction. if you buy the b&m short shifter it should come with instructions. regardless i still get question on how to do this swap.
i used my s14 as an example http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/IM000770.jpg. i believe its the same with the s13 so you dont have to worry. first pop off the shift boot to expose the shifter. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/IM000779.jpg there are 4 philips screws holding the center console togther. 2 under the shift boot and 2 in the center storage area http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/centerconsole.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/center.jpg after removing the 4 screws unplug the power mirror plug and remove the center console. by now you should be looking at the plastic protector shift boot which are held in by 4 10 mm. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/protectorboot.jpg btw you can also use the philips to remove the 10 mm. after removing the boot, you will see the shifter and 4 12 mm bolts. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/IM000772.jpg there are 6 total 12 mills on the shifter 4 you can see and 2 you cannot see. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/shifter.jpg i had to jack the car up and go under the car to get to the 2 bolts. you'll see what i am talking about when you go under the car. you need a 12 open end wrench to get it off. took me a while but i got it off. i used a b&m unit. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/IM000773.jpg once you remove the 6 12 mm bolts just lift and the shifter will slide out. you dont have to replace the gasket. if its a little bit worn just use a little rtv and you'll be good. make sure that the tip of the shifter is in the loop and slide the shifter in place. bolt the 6 12mm in place. !!make sure it shifts!! slide the plastic boot back on and bolt the 4 10mm back in place. reconnect the power mirror. screw the 4 philips back in place http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j311/huda424/IM000779.jpg and pop back the boot and you are done. there was a big difference from the stock and the b&m. the new shifter is hard as hell to shift but i'll get use to it. dont blame me if you done like the feel of your shifter i am just a messenger. good luck. oh the ka use the same shifter as the sr so ka people i got you covered too.

It gets a little easier to shift after awhile. But it's definately MUCH stiffer when you first install. Nice write-up.

I was not able to in my S14 a few years ago or my S13 a few months ago.
... at least not easily, it was just faster to jack the car up and go underneath, seriously.

of you have a rachet open end long enough and small enough you can get it from the car. i did loosen the bolts but could not completely take them off thats why i chose to jack up the car. its faster. oh make sure to tighten every bolt. if you dont you'll hear a hissing sound coming from the shifter.

i understand what your tryin to say. the plastic fitting on the b&m CAN be a little troublesome to fit in the hole in the shaft. you have to line that little sucker up perfectly with the hole, then push down..

i've had the little plastic piece come off when i was removing the shifter one before...i just popped it back into the socket..no problems.
