The bad news is; it'll be a remake.
So say goodbye to all the hosts you know and love.

I really do not think it will last long at all. It seems america likes to fuck shit up sometimes. I will give it a chance and hope we dont have a group of tools for hosts. Who do you guys think might host this?

i hope its the guys from Car and Driver or Motor Trend fellas.

I bet its gonna be some gay celebrity, but Id like to see Jay Leno host it too.

He reviews cars great and knows everything about them

One of the reasons the BBC original is so great to ME is that a lot of cars they test , WE don't have over here. How many mustang, camry, accord, civic, new charger, new camaro, blah blah can we see ? Stick with the original.

just some more news

NBC has ordered a pilot for “Gear”, an American version of Top Gear, that will be officially announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit (January 19-27).

The pilot will be filmed at a secret location around Los Angeles equipped with a race track and hangar where the show will be filmed in front of a audience.

NBC reality chief Craig Plestis said the network already is getting numerous inquiries from car companies that had heard rumblings about a U.S. remake.

“This is a favorite of all automobile companies as it shows their cars in such a great light,” he said.

NBC reality chief Craig Plestis said he is a longtime fan of “Top Gear.”

“It all comes down to subject matter — it’s a cool show about cars,” he said. “It’s very compelling for us because we have a great platform and space on the network to have such a show.”

Among “Gear’s” popular segments that will be replicated in the U.S. are races where the hosts have to reach a destination using different modes of transportation, road tests, challenges like converting and refurbishing existing cars into anything from a stretch limo to an amphibian and celebrities racing a midsize car. (”American Idol’s” Simon Cowell holds the record for fastest lap time with a Chevrolet Lacetti.)

The series will premiere at 11 p.m. on March 4th before moving to its regular time period at 10 p.m. March 11th.

who knows it might be decent

Sooo, does this mean that the companies are gonna be paying off the show via endorsements so they can show their cars in a better light, regardless of whether the car is crap or not??

i have a feeling its gonna be ruined. As stated already, the coolest thing about it was the cars that we dont get here. Another thing i really loved about top gear was the photography.

El Toro possibly?

I've heard they were holding casting calls for hosts, and a lot of automotive journalists showed up.
There's rumors that Ezra Dyer might be one of them, which would totally rock, as he's one of the best scribes out there right now imo.

sounds like its going to be a commercial for the big 3.. gm, ford, Chrysler..
what i liked about the British show is that they are unbiased towards any car manufacture. The US show will probably be paid to say so and so is a good car etc..

It's gonna be shit.

If the real top gear couldn't survive in america... which it didn't on the discovery channel, I doubt an american remake is going to be popular.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

There's a lot of new vehicle testings that go on over there.

Plus there's lots of hangers.

Oh yeah.

Son of a bitch. I got so excited at the thread title. :(

The episode where they 3 drove cars off a cliff and shot at them with A) a rifle, B) a machine gun and C) a bazooka? Fucking priceless.

It was all reruns on discovery and i had already seen all the episodes. Not to mention they cut out a large portion of the show to stick commercials in, so i didnt bother watching. All the Top Gear fans probably watched something else while it was on for those same reasons.

As for attracting a new audience that is not familiar with the show, it failed. Americans probably changed the channel because of the British accents.

so we get a show with the styling of top gear but without the head-up-own-ass jeremy clarkson aspect? sounds great to me.
the bbc version is nothing but america bashing and gross misinformation anyway. great show if you mute it.

Unfortunately, not having witty british humor and great automotive journalism will cause this show to fail imo. I can't imagine who the hosts will be.
Ive always thought that this show would never work in the states b/c I can't imagine the show giving truthful reviews. Whether you liked Clarkson's reviews or not is irrelevant... at least he gave his honest opinions. NBC won't allow this sort of writing in their scripts because the failing U.S car manufacturers will probably be paying them off to write good reviews.

The best part about Top Gear is the hosts. Jeremy Clarkson is such a character. That is why I never watched 5th gear. Oh well.

Jay Leno would make an awesome host though. Too bad he won't be.

I can imagine this sucking hardcore....like someone said before probably end up with someone like funk flex hosting or like fucking Big C from street fury, some gay shit and reviewing shitty ass gm cars like the cobalt etc etc once again.

seriously tho why be origninal in the US when you can just rip off shit someone else did.....I cant wait to graduate with my degree in marketing so I never have to work all I have to do is copy shit thats already been done

I watch top gear for the showmanship. It's wildly entertaining.

If i wanted to watch really good drivers give a good a review on a car, i would watch 5th gear. ( i actually do watch 5th gear as well. tiff needle is fucking awesome.)

ROFLMAO

oh, jesus!! like the shitty novelest??? The sad part is I have read so many of his books. Besides buying alot of them in the airport, I got no excuse.

It wont even last a whole season. Like when they tried to remake the BBC's "Couplings" or "the Office". oh wait, some people do prefer the american office over the BBC one,:keke:

the problem is, the BBC host can drive the cars, who can do that here?? Dean Kane ?? lol

Exactly...they give you their opinions on the cars. You can either like/dislike them. When I hear Clarkson's give his opinion which I don't agree with, it always makes me giggle to hear his view and puts a smile on my face. Even though I may not agree with his opinion...usually his critiques are humorous.

the funniest thing top gear ever did... was when they put the new cobra on a dyno, and claimed that the name should be changed because the wheel horsepower didn't add up to the claimed CRANK horsepower. oh, and they called the dyno a "lie detector for cars". which was adorable.

This will be better than the 20 different versions of deal or no deal or apprentice or whatever other reality crap they have.

Atleast if this is on, I will have something to watch that is half decent on NBC besides my name is earl. Plus this will be something new and ratings should be high at first, which is what NBC wants.

top gear is full of shit. that's not an opinion, it's fucking fact.

The great part about Top Gear though, was they didn't give a rats ass that they were full of shit. If you didn't like what Clarkson said, you STILL watched because he was FUN to watch.

I love how opinionated he is, it's hilarious to hear him slam these cars wether you agree or not. That's something US television hasn't figured out yet. Sometimes it's okay to hate the person hosting the show, as long as they are a personality that is consistently entertaining.

Top Gear was also brilliantly mature in many respects. The interviews mid show were decent. The old rock stars they'd put into the rental cars were hilarious to see driving.

Have you ever watched American automotive television programming?

It's an incest fest. Automotive companies just jerking each-other off for half-an-hour. Branding EVERYWHERE. Monotonous narration, no honest opinions at all. I'd take a BAD but honest opinion ANY day over a payed for or reserved "opinion" by some old fuck with a reputation in the industry.

Also:

1. American car market is BORING.

2. No manufacturers will allow the host to verbally slam cars the way Clarkson does in Europe.

3. Hosts will have NO personality, guaranteed. Top Gear has a perfect mix of the Exotic loving old man, the youth oriented little guy, and the Volvo/Jaguar stuffy British guy. US Version will have 3 B or C list ex-actors. Period. Probably one female host that's just T&A. Show will be completely over-scripted and inauthentic.

Blah.
