View Full Version : Home Depot is completely useless.

Seriously. It seems every time I go there for some little thing, they don't have it. Today, it's copper crush washers. Other times, I've needed various nuts/bolts and things of that nature, nothing obscure, and they either don't carry them or they're out of stock (a hardware store that massive being completely out of 8mmx1.25 nuts, what the hell, God FORBID I need something in METRIC). Every time I go in there I hate it just a little bit more.
It really makes me miss the hardware stores that somehow, though they were smaller, managed to always have what you need. I go to Taylor's sometimes because they're awesome, but there's only one in the area and it's like 30 minutes away. Meanwhile, Home Depots can be found within a 5 minute drive from any given point in space.
Anyone else feel this way? :(

i go to the small stores because its easier to find, and they always have what i need. i go to ACE hardware, which i believe is a midwest/chicagoland only store. great service, and they even have heat treated studs and bolts.

ACE/True Value owns for that sort of thing. Your anti-stealership source for graded nuts, bolts, etc. Even a really large selection of stainless and chrome hardware.

We did have True Value around here, then it became a Taylor's, which then became a Salvation Army. Now the only Taylor's is far away.
I've seen Ace Hardware out in Chesapeake, but it's been a while.

I've given up on asking for any assistance from the job loving, highly educated group of individuals that work at my local home depot....
however, great gardening help can be found outside the store for a negotiable price.

ACE is also in cali. i love that store for shit like bolts/nuts and other misc small items.
I was an rss rep and a merchandiser for HD. HD has been going down hill, and not only do customers not like home depot, their own employees hate the place. very sad...

Menards is the worst. Besides being overly large for no reason, they seem to lack anything I need. Another brilliant thing about Menards is that there is one entrance and one exit. So no matter where you park you'll still have to walk the distance of the store.

Completely agree with this thread.
I have found the best, most organized, place to get hardware (especially metric) is SEARS HARDWARE
These are not the same as regular Sears

ACE is my favorite too, they're smaller than Home Depot but they always have way better selection when it comes to bolts, nuts, fittings, and such small hardware. I've replaced so many old bolts on my car with theirs, and I have the heat treated ones holding my coilovers.

The place is evil. Hahahah. Just walk out the entrance doors.
I do it all the time.

home depot does suck for hardware for my car...but god dammit i spend an hour every time i go to that store looking at shit i don't really need to buy.
I DO NOT need a new toilet.
I DO NOT need a wrecker bar.
I DO NOT need lumber.
I DO NOT need power tools.
but i will look at them anyway and every once in a while i end up with a saw or drill or something.

ace employee: "Well that's because they have to come from europe where they use the metric system"

they don't really sell hardware, they just sell jank tools that break in a week and wrenches and sockets that don't fit.
that said, bigger industrial type shit from them is usually a good deal, i've got an a-frame press that worked great for replacing my bushings.

Homo Depot sucks but it also has to do with the store's location. The ones in the ghetto are super lame.
I've had much more success looking and finding things at Lowe's.
As far as bolts and nuts, I usually grab them extra ones whenever I make a junkyard trip.
Harbor Freight rules imo, I've only had a few things break on me but this was after years of abuse.

+1 for Lowe's and Sears Hardware. The always have the right bolts and stuff and the customer service is great.
Home Depot always has shit for brains, asshole workers that i want to hit with a 2x4, not to mention, they never have ANYTHING you need. F that place.

our lowes is pretty well stocked...except there are usually 2 employees actually helping people....the other 10 are teenagers who avoid eye contact with you so they don't have to help you
I needed a piece of rubber tubing cut (they hide the shears), and i literally was chasing someone down for help....this guy was blatantly walking away from me pretending to be on a mission

Been to the new Lowe's that opened in Northridge and the workers there are super cool. I asked once about some velcro ties and this girl took the time to stop what she was doing and walk me to the item.

not only does home depot not have everything i need, but i usually get more help from other customers than from the workers.
i'm sure most of them work there because they needed a job and home depot happened to be hiring, not because they know anything useful.
there should a be a home depot-like store for car stuff
tons of auto grade hardware, and just as much metric as standard.
auto paint and painting supplies/tools
exhaust tubing, roll cage tubing, mufflers, flanges for days
more welding stuff
wheels, tires
lots of kinds of hoses
engine stuff
etc
like a combination of home depot/kragen/muffler shop/paint shop/welding supply store

Because most of them are teenagers who are only there to scrape whatever they can off of minimum wage or slightly higher. They could give two shits about helping the customer they just wanna make money and then go to a party, get plastered, and get laid after they clock out. I know this because my friends work at Menards.

A minimum wage teenage worker would be the last person I would ask to help me at a Home Depot anyway.

I use to work at Home Depot...and at a time it was good. Employees were happy with nice bonues and coverage was everywhere. The store excelled in customer service and stock...the manager was top in our district. Sadly because of her merits they paid for her moving to the tri-state area and that store went down hill. I was the only one in my department that had the product knowledge, while other co-workers were slack or just didn't care. Afterwards I went Lowes...nicely stocked but the scheduling was all kinds of wack with lack of coverage. Then I went back to HD (different location) and that place was a hot mess and had such a high theft rate...I caught someone trying to still a garbage disposal and a faucet!
Anyways, that was two years ago and I'm not surprised things got progressively worse. I knew the company was going to crap once they (i.e. new management) treated the employees like crap, cut bonuses (discretely) and created all kinds of crazy rules to get you fired.

Agreed, I have a part-time job so I understand how hard it is to make money. I work at a restaurant though, and I think I have a better attitude towards helping the customer(s).
I just don't understand how a business can get through to the customer if there's an indifferent child in between products and buyers.

I HAEYYEEEEEETTE going to Home Depot. The last time I went, it turned into a fiasco, and I got some dumb bitch fired.
I went in to ask about some shelf hinges, and I go up to this chick at the desk by the paint section. She's standing there, doing nothing, talking to the paint guy.
Me: Do you know what aisle the shelf hinges are in?
Her: *smacks lips* Oh, they're somewhere back there (points in no specific direction)
Me:(with every inch of patience i can muster) can you tell me which aisle?
Her: I SAID they're over there.
Me: All I'm asking you to do is your FUCKING job. Instead of pointing at empty air space, why don't you take me to where I need to go?
At this point, she turns around to face the guy she was talking to (which, incidentally, has not said a word this whole time) and says, loudly, "ANY-ways...."
It was the middle of the week during the day, so I go to the front and ask one of the cashiers to page the store manager. I wait for about 15 minutes, he comes out, and I tell him the story. While I'm telling him, I see her walk away from where she was. Haha, she thought I wasn't watching.
I point her out going around the corner to the next aisle to the manager, and he pages her from the cashier's desk. The cashier chick is ice-grillin me the entire time- ah, the blind loyalty of youth.
He paged her 3 times. Finally she comes around, saying she was on her break. BULLSHIT.
He starts to ask her what happened, and she starts to tell him (as loud as she can possibly speak) how I was following her around after supposedly she said to me that she was on her break. I look at her, with the biggest smile on my face. He saw her when she was going around the corner, and he saw her when he was on his way to answer my call. Bitch is going down.
Manager: Are you aware that this is my 4th complaint about you?
Her: OMG she is lying!!! Why would I lie?? (Blah blah blah...)
Manager: This is it. Go to the back and get your stuff, and turn in your (whatever he said).
Her: (screaming) This is bullshit! I'm gonna call my mama and we're gonna get a lawyer... (Usual ghetto threats)
Moral of the story:
If you don't like jobs dealing with customers, then don't take the job.
Oh, and as for my shelf hinges- I got them for free.
