View Full Version : Who rides a fixie?

Was bored and was looking through ziptied and stumbled on a fixie bashing/praising thread and though I would start one here. Once upon a time I was a Cat2 road racer and track racer on the San Diego Velodrome. I wont lie, back in high school I used to ride to school on the track bike weaving through traffic like a moron...but that was when I was dumb and fearless. Anyways, fast forward 5 years I am out of the army and trying to quit smoking. I put together my old backup bike for the track and have been commuting to work... Who here rides a fixie? Who rode one before they were the "cool thing" to do?

Early 80s Vitus Track Frame/Fork, all bonded aluminum...really scary to ride, lol.

Old Shimano 105 cranks

Campy Record headset

Old Cinelli 38mm bars and stem (cant remember the length)

Beat up old mavic rear clincher rim on a Suzue track hub

Some beat up old front spare wheel

i havent been riding too long, rode my first fixie lil over a year ago. i hope im not one of these guys who started riding when it was only cool. anyways i really enjoy it and commute everyday to school here in richmond but i dont think i fit in with the crowd that rides fixies here. i ride an olive giant bowrey, orange deep-V's, race face bars with oury's and thats about it. a lot of people hate the bowrey but ive rode many and really like it. it is a rush in traffic everyday, but i think thats what separates fixies from the rest.

some old pic's will post some up with a real camera soon.

Figured I'd see someone from Richmond post up, lol.

Need to finish getting the shit for mine, got an old ass 10 speed my roomie wrecked and bent shit, figured I'd get the shit to make it a fixie and try it out.

None of those flat bars though, shits are ugly. Was gonna get deep V's, but don't think I will, everyone is rocking those these days.

fixed gear bikes are a pretty lame trend. i understand couriers in flat areas (NYC) riding them, but anywhere else makes zero sense.

.....that said i do have a singlespeed (still freewheel) made out of my old Specialized mountain bike. there's a perfectly flat trail a few miles from me that's great for it.

i haven't rode my road bike in a while. its an old school celeste bianchi. i sorta want a convert it to a fixie since around my area its all flat. completely flat. prolly when i get the time, ill do it since i know a couple heads that ride one around san diego. i'd just need to get a roof rack or take it apart each time i bring it down.

as of now.

the bike its self was a graduation gift and the rear deep v i got for my b-day so its like the hipsterness is being thrown on me lol. but the deep v's are nice, very tough and thats what im looking for. my older brother who also goes to VCU here has been riding for years.

240trainee- i dont go your way often but when i do i make sure i see your car, ive never seen it on the road tho. there are a couple s13's in the area commonly, who has the white vert near you?

onabulletride-i like the knuckles, thinking about one for my next build. how much toe overlap do you have? someone i know is having a problem with that on a bareK. very clean

The toe overlap can be a problem, especially with the shitty pedals that are currently on it. definitely worse than my old steamroller, but you get used to it, as long as im careful in slow turns i usually don't hit, and it's never made me go down. soccer moms in suvs otoh...

also to busted, it is definitely a fad, but riding a fixed gear is a very unique experience, and its a hell of a lot of fun, which is why i think so many people are addicted to riding them nowadays.

How the hell does it seem dumb. I know Los Angeles is nothing like New York, But I can get to places faster on the bike then in my cars. Plus I dont have to use gas.LOL I can ride for miles, $60 for tires every 2 months 5days a week sounds good to me Beats $45 every 5days. You do the math.

"fixies" are a trend, they'll go back to just being used by couriers soon enough. it's more fashion statement than anything. that doesn't apply to road bikes in general, though. i keep my seat relatively low on my "road" bike (read: mountain bike with smooth tires and road handlebars), i hate sitting up high like that.

in cities where your drive isn't more than a few miles it makes sense. here in STL, unless you live IN the city they're pretty useless for transportation. i ride my bikes to the grocery store, but that's about it. i mostly just ride for exercise and fun... and using a bike to commute is a great idea if you like being sweaty and gross at work.

I HATE FIXIES !!!!!

I HATE HIPSTER TRENDS!!!!!

probably because I am from the hipster capital of the world, SEATTLE.

I live in LA now and have been noticing more and more of them around. And last week at lunch, at the "101 cafe", my trend sucker friend told me he was thinking about getting one. ughh.
Then he gives me a shirt that makes fun of hipsters, that he bought at a "boutique". and it even makes fun of fixies!!!! WTF, I must know some retartds!

For real.

No disrespect to anyone, I'm just stating my opinion--->Fixed-geared road bikes and the general hipsters that ride then really aggravate me.

Up here in Oregon there was this massive surge of tight-jeaned, sweater-wearing, block-spectacle asshats riding around like they are better than everyone else. I just can't stand it.

Though I ride an S&M BMX so I can't really talk about being cool on a bike...

Im not so sure though, People really love it. All my best canyon racing stories are the ones were I got the back end of the 510 to come out. and those are from 10 years ago, long before I knew of drifting.

back to the topic. yeah, big urban carriers can ride fixed gears and be all kevin bacon.:keke: But for the rest of us, its just a way the hipsters can spread their scurge around easier. I though we had them cornered into Seattle, Portland, SF, Silverlake and Echopark.
Fixed gears are to hipsters as planes are to SARS. :)

I guess its not that bad though.

I want a real gear bike so I can ride the canyons in the days and stay in shape. Maybe one year race in RAAM.:bigok:

Wow take me back to being a teenager. I used to own and ride a number of long distance Criterion Bikes Peugot, etc... and my Pinnacle a Pogliaghli (vertical dropouts) he used to work for Masi. All Campagnolo Nuevo Record parts, Fiami Gold rims with sew ups, plus other top end parts I have forgotten about. Fuck its been so long. I got into Mountain Bikes around 12 years ago. I have a Diamond Back DBR Race Frame in Chromoloy with Snake stays,Answer Manitou II front suspenion, Ritchie rims, and other parts I would have to look at the bike to remember. LA is not bike friendly so I mostly run these days.

I would not mind one of the newer crossover Mountain Bikes with dual suspension. Maybe I would get into taking my bike places to ride then. City Streets here though are downright dangerous for bicyclists.

let me break it down.
couriers ride bikes for a living. they ride fast and hard. emphasis on hard. they need bikes that can take severe beating, and have very few parts to break or repair.
take an indestructible steel framed road bike. you only have one gear, so no shifters to break. you're using a fixed rear hub instead of a free wheel, so you can kick stop. so you don't need brakes. this all makes sense because you live in NYC. it's flat, you don't need shorter gears.
do this for decades. in comes the internet, and youtube. people videotape themselves delivering and racing on fixed gear bikes through heavy traffic, dodging cars and weaving between taxis. hipsters see them.
and now you have these threads.

don't get me wrong, fixed gear bikes are cool when used for their actual purpose, and single speeds are GREAT for exercise. i've got a single speed that i enjoy beating on. but chumps with messenger bags riding to class would be far better off on a basic, store bought road bike.

sillyvia13
01-16-2008, 04:11 PM
makes sense...less parts to fixie...lol...

I enjoyed riding bikes years back...but I dunno how much fun you can have on that...a 20 inch bmx and some dirt jumps would be more fun IMO.
or a 6 pack of New Castle and a Mt. bike, in the woods...thats just me!

They def look pretty cool...I like basic simple. dunno if I would ride it, you'll find my ass dead! fixie'd under a bus...

I think that "VICE" had alot to do with it.
I would see all the NYC cyclist getting praise and props in that rag for years.(they are Gnarly, they deserve it) But the entire reading audience is hipsters, that look to see when they can bring high waisted pants on women back, what bands are no longer obscure enough, whats the new american apperal gear, and what trends are cool and have street cred.

Hipsters with Fixed Gear bikes are like skateboard "posers" in the 80's and early 90's. You look like you are all NYC, but your really a idiot.

Like I stated above,
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s242/castro_castro/quiksil.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s242/castro_castro/quicksilver.jpg

And dont tell the hipsters that american apparel got bought out by a major corporation and the cloths are alot cheaper quality now, sshhhhh!!

I'm in no way bashing bikes; more power to you for riding.
But, a fixed gear sounds like you're just asking for trouble, especially around here in western Washington.
I wouldn't bother trying to negotiate most places in the Seattle area on a fixie. Give me a freewheel if i'm going to be dealing with any real elevation changes.

yeah, with forward dropouts a "fixie" pretty much isn't happening. if you really want just one gear, it'd be a lot easier to just convert to a freewheel singlespeed. the kit i used was like 25 bucks, had three different gears and spacers for a shimano cassette, and a tensioner. works great
