So I'm looking for a set of tires (cheap) for 17x9 +22mm and not rubbing fender or KTS coilover. I was thinking either Falken 912, General UHP, Hankook RS2 any other? What size/profile do you think I should run? Thanks
Why do people stretch their tires? for sharp response?

falken 912 are garbage. i used to have 512's and when they were discontinued i thought that maybe falkens new 912's would be just as good... yah now
when it gets cool outside they get super hard and start spinning. they are honestly worse than my old crappy bridgestone potenza re92's
imo i would go with the hankooks
for me i would run 215/45r17's all around

I think a lot of people stretch them just for looks, but i read in one of the threads that is stiffens the side walls for some kind of performance.

you strech them bcuz then there is less of a contact patch for the tire= easy drifting!!!

people also strech tiresd to help fit wider wheels in the same amount of space.;)
but for the op. i would reccomend either 215/45 for strech or 235 for full tire. i currently run dunlop direzza 215/45/17 tires on my 17x9 +12 wheels.:fart:

get rubber ones
but seriously it all depends on what you are using the car for
stretched shit seems to be for looks mostly but it lets you go lower to sink wheels into the wells and supposedly makes a stiffer sidewall i guess but some tires like 615's already have a beefy ass sidewall so i dunno

I run 255-width Kumho MX on my 17x9.5's wheels in the rear with a conservative +35 offset. I prefer the look of having beefier tires and a less outrageous offset. I have coilovers, rear z-brakes, -2 deg camber, lightly pulled & rolled fenders. No rubbing inside-out, whatso-ever. Got a pair of 245's for the front, and 255 for the rear for around 550 shipped via tirerack. Works great dd and the occasional time trial event for me! I also use the MX on my 92' miata and 95 civic hatch which I also track every now and then. Never done any drift events, so I cannot comment on that.
I would have opted for some 265 or 275 RE-01R's, but bridgestone makes very limited 17-in tires in the wider sizes these days  There are good size Advan Neovas, but they're very expensive imo. Set of 17's cost around $800 iirc. The RE-050's might be my next choice. still, kumho is a good choice.

i run falken azenis up front 215/45R17 on 17x9 +20
and federal 595's in the rear 235/40R17 on 17x9+20
i love these tire sizes

i have 5zigen fn01r-c 17x9 and run 215\40 up front and 245\40 in the rear, would prefer 235\40 in the rear. up front looks great, no rubbing but there's not much rim to ground clearance..especially with these so cal streets.

thanks guys for all the comments. So sounds like people run stretch for fitment. So will 225/45 fit OK w/o fender roll/pull?
I'm using the car mostly for daily and occasionally drift/track. So which tire is most suitable? Hankook RS2 or Federal 595 or Falken azenis or other good cheap tires? I'm trying to pick something that discount tires carry b/c they're close to my house. Thanks

depends on your suspension.
stock=no problems
coilovers= depends on how low you go.

With that size/offset wheel you will probably have to roll/pull the fenders a bit no matter what tires you run. In my opinion anything below a 235 on a 9" wheel is a waste of wheel. Shit I run 235's on my 8" wheels. I am going with 17x9 with a +20 offset with 255/40/17 azenis rt-615's. For sure I will have to roll/pull my fenders quite a bit though. The bottom line about stretch is that it is used for looks and to fit wheels on a car that really don't fit the car in the first place.

I wonder where you got those azenis from???? haha ^^^^
Run azenis up front and feds in the rear.

People stretch tires for looks, you could stretch 215's, but stretched tires on 17x9 +22 will only look good if you run biggie spacers. The 225's won't be stretched very much. You'll most likely want to do a roll anyway just to be safe.

running staggered tire sizes on non staggered rims, will cause understeer. i dont suggest this, unless you're just doing it for looks.
17x9 with a 215/45 up front, and a 17x9 with a 245/45 in the rear, will make the car understeer. streching a tire makes it loose traction easier and allows for smoother weight transfer. having a higher breakaway point in the rear than the front, will cause the car to understeer. if you're going for looks only, than fine. but performance wise its better to stay stagger the tire and wheel, or run the same size all around.

ok cool, so I'll stay the same all the way around and not too stretch. maybe 225 for now and up to 245 once I roll my fender.
How much negative camber can I use for front and rear to tuck the tire in and have good performance/handling.

225/45 17s all around on S-chassis for that size and if its lowered. Im running 245/40s on my skyline w/ 17x9 +22 just cuz its not lowered.

What do you have S13 or S14? That'll help us for fitments size. But I'm guess S14 since those offset are rare for 4 lugs.
For sizing on just the wheel I'd do 245/40 or 255/40 all around.
I personally have S14 with 17x9 +20 w/ F:235/40 RT-615 and R:245/40 ST-115. Reason why for the front is that 615 don't come in 245/40. I am change tires once these go out. There was a dealing going on that's why I got these tires. The only time I rub is if I'm in a really hard turn. If you go check my homepage to myspace I have pics of the fittment. My fenders aren't rolled too.
For tires just get Federal 595. There do what you need for DD and some tracking. There super cheap so whatever. I've had Feddies and I liked them a lot. I plan to go back to them after these go those these on the rear. But if you plan on doing some serious tracking get the RS2.
Search around there some threads about tires.
Here something http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Bridgestone&model=Potenza+RE-01R&tirePageLocQty=
On the spec of a tires there a Rim width range on the tire. One ting on a stretch tire is there isn't much tire flex if not none. I personally haven't had much fun with that. Just popping understeer in a hard turn isn't funny. Now with the right size tire I can feel the understeer coming. Now they do make it easier to drift with on the rears but there more of show thing. Basic physics. Just think of it.

What do you plan to use the car for, and how much power? use can determine what tires. Like how RT-615s SUCK for drag racing.
I run 17x9 +20 all around on my S13 with RT-615s for street/auto-x/road racing. 235/40 up front and 275/40 on the rear. I also have 15x8 weld drag lits with 26x10 drag slicks for drag racing.

It all depends on what you plan to use the car for. If you are gunna daily drive with occasional track, autocross, and drift useage I would reccomend 2-2.5 degrees negative camber in the front with zero toe and 1 to 1.5 degrees negative camber in the rear with maybe 1/16 total toe in. For track only obviously you would want more aggressive settings, but the fact that you posted this thread to figure out your tire sizes rather than researching it yourself tells me that it will not be a serious track car.

so this is a S13 hatch and my usage is daily and occasional drift/track and noooo drag. HP-pretty much stock, not much upgrade yet, but S14 SR20DET swap is coming up in the summer.
So sounds like Fed 595 is the way to go. and azenis is also recommended, but isn't those are more expensive? So is 225/45/17 or 225/40/17 closer to stock diameter? b/c I want to keep the speedometer acurate as much as possible.
2.5 front 1.5 rear camber and 1/16 rear toe? I thought any toe is bad and 0 toe is the best?

^^
Well you want to go with 45 series if you want to keep your speed. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html There that's what you'll want. Note that you will being stretching your tire over spec so that isn't going to prefect for speed. Think of it...
If your on a S13 your going to do some rolling at least to get those on.
Research about alignment... Why would stock alignment come with some toe? R&D well yeah. That's why there, there. Do some more research about tires and wheel. Before you go into buying this stuff.

Because you have a 215 on a 9J.....
I run 245/45/R17 RT615 on all 4's... 17x9 +30 with a 5mm spacer in the front to clear coils... Had to add a little camber to the front to keep from rubbing..
With CityTireOnline's great prices on RE01R's there is no reason for you to not buy those.
Federals are a shitty tire if you demand performance. If you want to use them or sliding then by all means but my friend's average speed slowed by 40 kp/h when he had Federal 595's on his GT-R

I run a staggered tire setup on my 17x9's and hardley ever experience understeer. i run 215/40 azenis up front and 235/40 feds in the rear.
At the last track day, i was experiencing some understeer going into down hill corners in third, but once the car started sliding it was ok. Thats only because ive been on the wear bars for a while...Its time for some new tires. Im gonna run 215/45 up front this time to help fill the tire to fender gap.

now I'm thinking 235/40/17 all around. I will do fender roll too. So will 235/40/17 close to stock diameter b/c I want to keep my speedometer accurate. and with a roll, can 235 fit in there and not rub fender or Stance coilover? thanks

235/40/17's are pretty close in diameter, definitely close enough. The reccomended tire size for a 9" wheel is 255 so the 235's will be just a tiny bit stretched, therefore your wheel will hit the coils before your tires. With a roll and MAYBE just a SLIGHT pull you will clear the fenders just fine.

i dont like federals for my daily wheels cuz they run bigger than normal for the sizes i use (225/40/18 and 255/35/18) and i HATE tall sidewalls. For drifting they're cool cuz they're cheap.
For daily i run Falken FK452s and i love them. Just ordered some more too.

i mean a federal 225/40/18 is bigger than a 225/40/18 from any other tire brand. its weird. I dunno why their tires run big, but they do and it annoys me. Its VERY apparent with 17s as well. A friend of mine used 205/45/17s on his 17x9 and they looked like 215s.

Almost all tire companies do that with their performance tires.. It's a false sizing to get by tire width regulations and stuff.

I got UHP's like 2 years ago when they frist came out. they were really cheap when they first came out but I guess now that they are known they raised the prices. anyways they are comparable to a falken 512 or federal 595 I think. im going for a set of falken rt615....75 each I beleive.

I think you should save up for the right tires. Tires are the second most important thing for your car's performance (the driver is the first). If you cheap out you will regret it in the long run. If you need something to roll around on for a month or so just get some used tires for temporary use. Every time that I have ever gone the cheap route so that I could have it now I regreted it in the long run.

RE01Rs are the shiiiiiit
i love those tires
100% awesome
but i still like AD07s like 800 tmies more
those are better, imo
grip like fucking NUTS and drift sooo smoooooth and consistent
RE01Rs do too but not as great as AD07s
DZ101s are really nice and cheaper
going to try those Z1s
SS595s are great because cheap and last a good whiel just the grip imo, is lacking. Id bump up tire size if i ran those again
The RS version seems great, havent tried it though.
HTM on the 27th, ill run the DZ101s and some of my RE01Rs in the back. grip city! woo woo should be awesome. so sad to kill RE01Rs in one day but somethings just need to be done. 245/40/18 bye bye.
