So my friend finally got around to taking off the turbocharger off the 240sx he purchased a while back. The guy he bought it from said it has a upgraded turbocharger that was from an S15. The engine is a redtop sr20det. The car was running 15psi-18psi so I believed that it was a t28 in the car cuz I know the stock t25 couldn't handle that. Anyways so finally got around to taking it off and we found out it was an "IHI" turocharger. I thought the turbochargers that came on sr20's were made by garrett so this leads me to my question of, is what is pictured a T28 turbocharger? I am aware that IHI does make T28 turbocargers but have never seen one before so I have no clue if this is one and if so, what car could it have come from?

wow, i can say that's a new one that i haven't ever seen. the only info i can add is that IHI is most popular for being Subaru's main turbo supplier with their VF series. (the STI comes with a IHI VF39) or at least it used too, i quit looking at subaru after they lost their flavor in 2005

I'll buy it from you.
if the exhaust housing fits standard sr20 manifold and dump pipe itcould be an ihi compressor with an A'PEXi AX zorst housing.
have a look on that tag and see what it says. might say "VF23" or something
also look on the exhaust flange and see if it has apexi cast into it on the side. and it should have "P25" or "P22" or something cast in it somewhere too
The apexi AX series turbines were built for SR engines, they are basically a rebranded IHI turbo. like hks is to garrett.
the compressor from a vf23 (wrx) is almost the same as the compressor from an AX, they even have the same serial numbers, but the difference is the ihi branded item is abit deeper, and the apex item has the "airick" coating which promotes 5-10% faster spool.
I run one on my 180sx, the previous owner replaced the compressor on the APEXi AX with an IHI one cos it was stuffed.
depending on what model it is they make good power.
theyre meant to be similar power to a 2540 with the spool of a 2530
I find mine is a little laggier than a t28 but it hits hard and pulls all the way to redline, I do need a tune tho.

there is a VERY slim change that this is the IHI turbo that came on the MF-T S14's (very rare model s14)
post all the information in that first picture(part number/serial nuimber tag), I tried to enhance it with photoshop but it didnt come out any better.

Very nice
Just a little OT: But how does the Apexi AX turbo's compare to the Tomei IHI Arms turbo's?

I remember examining the whole turbo and there is no Apexi marking as described... It does use the stock Sr manifold... My first instinct when I saw IHI was Subaru and I remember looking at the tag for VF but there was no VF on it.... I wish I could have taken a better pic of the serial tag before my friend put it back... We might end up elling this real soon... I just wanted to know the info about it before we put it up for sale so I wouldn't mis-describe the item...
