The Courage tipped today at the port in Jersey City causing major damage to over 300 BMWs not including 70+ BMWs that were total losses.

a majority of the destroyed vehicles were M3s (mostly in dark blue) with a variety of 3ers and 1ers smashed up as well. A small number of the cars destroyed had German Tourist plates on them, those European delivery customers will NOT be getting their cars back.

If you were expecting your M3 or e90/92 in the next month, you're going to be in for a sad surprise.

those cars that were a total loss will be crushed, I asked a BMW rep, he stated that they will not be auctioned as there is a liability for letting those cars on the road. The shipping company's insurance is footing the bill, I do not know how they will handle those cars that are already owned by the European Delivery customers.

Those cars with light damage will be repaired at the Elizabeth Receiving facility and sold through BMW's dealer network as new cars.

fix and sell is sketchy as shit. I'm still wary after hearing all the horror stories about mechanics who caught all sorts of nasty diseases after working on katrina flood cars that were illegally resold.

whoa...I have not heard about this.

Also I agree that fix it and sell is sketchy...especially when you mark it as new.

not on this level, but they do it all the time.

cars get damaged in transport, it happens.

they "usually" do a good enough job that you would never know.

wow, what a waste.

I can understand the liability issue though.

I'm sure they have to have some sort of disclaimer

that woudl otherwise be shady as fuck, selling a high (perhaps over-) priced new car , only it's a high priced repaired car

does it still have that "great lakes" smell? lol. all i can imagine is someone finding a dead fish somewhere behind/under their dash somehow.
(yes i realize that these cars didn't get dropped into the drink, i just have a vivid imagination).

no disclaimer.

the cars have not been registered, they are "new".

that would be why the european delivery ones are being replaced. they have been delivered to the customer, and hence, are not new.

its all paperwork bs, and money.

more cars than you think are damaged before a customer takes delivery. tons get damaged on trucks all the time. I would imagine if it's not a completely cosmetic issue, they will total it out. I can't see them getting into undercarriage or mechanical type issues too awful much. Especially when the freight company's insurance has to foot the bill. if BMW wanted to be a dick, they could not accept any of them and the freight company would have to pay for them all.

Container ship packed with Bimmers was sitting in port. The ship tipped (most likely a ballast problem) and the cars inside slid around into one another/parts of the ship and got damaged.

To the people claiming "shady practices". When was the last time you bought a new vehicle? Did you check the invoice on the car? Cars get damaged all the time in transit. One of the cars I have bought my wife was backed into another car while unloading it from the truck. Big deal.

I doubt BMW is going to try and rebuild the TOTALED cars and re-sell them. Just the repairable ones. Relax.
