I am purchasing a s13 next week and have some questions about one I am looking at. The owner says that he his 240's ka24 has been ported, 265 cams, and has apexi dual n1 exhaust. He also says that it needs to be smogged. I am fairly convinced that with this set up it will not pass, but have heard otherwise from some gearhead friends of mine. I am probably not going to let this affect my decision on the car, but would like to know. Furthermore would anyone have an idea of how much bhp i should expect out of that sort of set up?

tell him to let u take it to get it smog'd before u buy it (i know ca is cracking down) if it fails they should tell u where u failed at and u can decide if its an easy fix and still buy it.

I would dyno it first, to see if it even has these "internals". Then you should know how much power it makes anyways.

With the right smog guy for the right price you can get a rb26 with a test pipe pass smog if you really wanted to.

and yes that would probably be a goodidea to dyno it. Anyone know a good place to get your car dyno'd in San Jose, Ca?

Hopefully congratulations will be in order once you've completed the purchase of your S13. Getting S13's smogged in California can be somewhat of a pain in the ass depending on how well/poorly maintained the car has been. Usually a good tuneup & the swapping out of the distributor cap & rotor, sparkplugs, gas & air filter, checking the idle & timing along with the oxygen sensor, cleaning out the throttle body & pouring a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank will get you past smog.

In your case the porting, the 265 degree cams & the N1 dual won't make it any easier and will probably get poorer gas mileage along with idling a bit rougher than most KA motors. Horsepower will probably amount to 165 to 175 ponies if that, (a dyno test will tell you that)...KA motor are known more for low-end kick in the pants torque than for anything else.

Other than turboing the motor or replacing the ECU/injectors & going with a stand alone engine management system, don't expect anything more than 180 horsepower out of your KA motor.

But S13's are a hell of a lot a fun to drive!! With the right setup, (300ZX brakes & a proper suspension setup), you'll be able to outbrake & outcorner most cars on the road.

If you want to learn about cars, upgrades and maintenance, an S13 is a great car to learn on, but if you're interested in getting more speed out of it, best bet is 1). be prepared to either shell out a lot of money by replacing / upgrading the KA motor with something else like a KA-Turbo, SR, RB or VQ... or 2). buying another car with better muscle car potential.

It's been discussed like crazy around here. 240's are great cars......just that the damn American KA version is slow as hell!!....Damn Nissan!!!

Anyhow, good luck on the decision & the purchase.

Poor guy, brand new to the boards and already has tons of -rep.

Hopefully the car will pass smog and you wont have to do anything illegal. Good luck. http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Sometimes they won't. I bought my car back in Feb 06 and the previous owner got it smogged in December 05, the smog is legal for upto 6 months and is electronically transferred most of the time. If this is the case, you can walk into the DMV and get it registered no problem. I'm not sure if that is how it's supposed to work, but you can check online at www.dmv.ca.gov and see when it was last smogged and then call the DMV or check the website and see what they say.

Ahem, if your not sure about the info your posting do not post it.

Everytime you purchase a car and transfer title a smog is required unless it was manufactured in like the last 2 years.
It is up to the previous owner to provide you with that smog with the purchase. A lot of times people don't do this but sell the car for a better deal to get out of doing it. Though by law they are supposed.
Its only good for 90 days not 6 months.
It is always electronically transmitted straight to the DMV computer in Sacramento via the smog computer used to test your car.

Why dont you just get the car pretested? I have no idea if it will pass dyno smog. Thank god I dont have to do dyno smog just the idle test.
