What do u guys think of these new cheap imported cars.
Like the Indian Tata
http://www.tata.com/0_products_services/homes_individuals/passenger_cars.htm
I thinks this is a terrible idea, if you cant afford a decent car you probably shouldn't be driving.
Also, their manufacturing standards are so poor I'm worried about my safety.

the 3 wheeled taxi.
Haha Tuk Tuks
I saw a bunch of Smart Cars last time I was in Canada. A large majority of them are used for parking garage patrol work.
I knew Smart Cars were coming to the US...just didn't know when. I heard they have better crash ratigns than Mini Coopers?

i'm told the smart car is going to be sold as an '09 model, but i haven't seen any stateside yet. i'd assume that they're going to be sold through mbz dealers but i know a few guys at fletcher jones and they don't have any solid info one way or the other.

Isn't there a watch company that has something to do with the Smart car?

01-10-2008, 09:18 PM
I think it was a partnership between swatch and mb
I think it sorta was a gray market import until the '09s come out its a crappy car though... indian and chinese cars over here will start out as total cans but i'm sure they will evolve just like japanese cars and the koreans are now
but i do not think i'll be purchasing a 'tuk tuk' or auto 'rick-shaw' any time soon

Lol this is the same thing people said about Japanese cars back in the Sixties. Also the same way Hyundai's were viewed in the late 80's. Now look at all the fools eyeing the next gen Tiburon. LOL We go round in circles LOL

Okay, I hear your arguments about the 60's and Japanese cars, but from all the Japanese old cars I have seen they atleast used good manufacturing techniques. The stuff I get at my shop, mostly from china is absolute garbage. Indian stuff and Korean stuff is a little bit better, but the bottom line is you get what you pay for and those Tata's are supposed to retail for $2,500 and shipping the p.o.s from India is probably going to be a nice portion of that, so how much is it actually worth?

Uhh I don't think anyone driving a Tata can endanger you haha. I'd drive the diesel Indica for a daily, and if it breaks for that price you can just buy six of them instead of one new car.

why are you worried about a car that hasn't even made it to U.S. shores? Besides, to actually sell in the states it'd first have to meet the U.S.'s requirements for safety and blah blah blah. These cars, if and when they make it stateside, will probably be bought by students who can't afford a reliable car and rather not drive a motorcycle.
I actually wouldn't mind one just to cruise around the neighborhood.

well I worry basically because I know what the DOT durability tests look like and something I brazed together could pass that. The build quality is crap, welds are crap and metal is crap. I just brought this up for discussions since most of the zilvia community are cheap asses and would buy something like this to daily. Also on a side note, we have a tuktuk at our shop... What a piece of junk...

Smarts aren't $2500, They're considerably more.

Smart cars are supposed to make it here officially later this year. Atleast that's what they were saying at the Auto Show. If those are cheap I would be down to get one.

everyone relax
these indian cars are made for indians are actually a step up in safety for them...instead of riding around on scooters and taxi scooter...this offers them a roof when it rains and a bit more protection in accidents
these wouldnt even pass inspection so nothing to worry about and if and when they do, do you really think american companies are going to let an indian company undersell them? no...

Not related, but there are no plans yet for a next gen tiburon, the Genesis coupe will be sold alongside the current Tiburon. But good point nonetheless.

Yeah, because the American companies didn't let Kia undersell them either.
Tata already has plans to enter the US market, and even if they don't pass inspection, the US government is usually lenient providing the car can be federalized after a year or so of production.
That is how all the first year Lotus Elises were able to slip by the Federal bumper standards.
