Some of you may have seen this already but for those that missed it, Discovery Channel ran a really cool 5 episode miniseries on the history of videogames called "Rise of the Videogame" late last year. I don't really play them as fanatically as I used to (if at all) but for some reason I'm still fascinated by them. Enjoy.

Level One - Origins (http://www.broadcaster.com/clip/32489)

Level Two - Consoles (http://www.broadcaster.com/clip/32516)

Level Three - FPS (http://www.broadcaster.com/clip/32517)

Level Four - Simulations (http://www.broadcaster.com/clip/32519)

Level Five - Internet Gaming (http://www.broadcaster.com/clip/32522)

I like how they are called levels instead of episodes. I still call levels, levels, and not "maps" as they are referred to today.

Yeah, well I think a 'level' or stage is something you clear, pass or get through. Whereas a map you can play over and over with various objectives and such. I've only watched the first three so far, need to make some time.

That was an awesome miniseries. It was cool to hear from the guys creating the games, how they did it and what it was like to be part of the beginning. Discovery Channel is awesome. +1 for the clips.

The first two parts are specially nostalgic for me.

you know, they totally ignored a lot of games that came out in the early 90s!! What about the mortal kombat controversy?? That MK stuff was huge back in the day along with some other games like street fighter.

Then, they kind of jumped to grand theft auto 3 but.. what about half life?? I'm barely at the end of the 2nd "level" but still, games like half life, quake, doom, and wolfenstein 3d had to have been mentioned. Hopefully they'll talk about them in the other levels.

ok good its in level 3 wewt

Yeah, certainly some stuff had to be left out.
Can't leave the impact of the Gameboy out of a videogame discussion.
Where's the NeoGeo? Didn't the Tubografix 16 had the first CD-Rom? And Luigi was introduced in Mario Bros. before Super Mario Bros.
Still, good series. The last two segments are pretty crazy.

i don't understand how they ignored counter-strike... and even more, half life. they did talk about mods, cs is by far the most recognized mod on the planet. how could they ignore it?
