http://www.bikernewsonline.com/2008/01/power-commander-fined-by-california-arb.htm

Article contents:

The American Motorcylist Association reports that the California Air Resources Board completed an investigation of the Power Commander ignition module produced by DynoJet Research, and found it to be in violation of the agency's emissions standards...

CARB said that the installation of these devices would adversely affect the emissions control systems of vehicles that were certified by the original equipment manufacturers to comply with the agency's emissions standards. Dynojet has now certified a California version of the "Power Commander" and has agreed to pay $1,000,000 in penalties to the California Air Pollution Control Fund.

There is a very popular tuning tool (fuel/ignition controller with PC interface) for motorcycles called the DynoJet Power Commander. The company has now been fined by the CARB (California Air Resource Board). Hopefully this is just a one time thing and it doesn't start a trend for other companies to be fined. That would be bad news for everyone, motorcycle and car enthusiasts.

Time to move out of state folks...i heard AZ is better now and Reno is just lovely.

EDIT: WTF happend to "off-road use only"???

Whats fucked up is that the whole state is all about making big brother laws. Shit, theyre worst than the damn Air Force. When people get hurt and shiet happens, ordinances and laws come down to try to stop it from happening again. Next thing you know, anything fun will be out the window because somebody got hurt or killed doing it. Funny part is that its not like they got anything more pressing to do...like fixing the fucking state budget, school system, getting people off welfare, making more jobs, or shiet that actually help the state more. You wanna fix the smog issues in Cali Californians?!?! TELL THEM TO MAKE A BETTER PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM!!!

IIRC they're also suing the Bush administration and the EPA over emission standards for the new cars in California. The crazier thing is that other states are slowly adopting California standards of regulating emission. By the time I'm done with school and go back to Cali, I should probably have a bone stock KA in my car.

what's great is here, they just did away with emissions testing on all cars. instead of putting you on a roller and testing your emissions, they just make sure than 96+ ECU's aren't throwing codes. on 95 and older, they just make sure that you have emissions equipment. and that pretty much just means they look to see if you have a cat. i think illinois is cutting back on their emissions laws, too.

That's what sucks. All these stupid laws will slowly spread because other states are jocking Cali since it's one of the most known and influential states in the U.S. A big part of that has to do with that fact that California has the western coastline and Hollywood, every other movie takes place in Cali and makes it look like paradise.

I guess the whole issue is that what will happen when lets say, XS-engineering gets sued or similar companies for modifying vehicles? Thats when, in my eyes, the domino effect of this ruling goes. If they can sue 1 company and win, whats stopping them from suing Greddy, Apex'i, XS and other car tuning company? Next thing you know, parts are banned in cali and shops like Phase2 are going out of business...

Well most places do have a disclaimer saying "parts are sold for off road use only, and are not to be used on emissions controlled vehicles"
or something like that.
So hopefully they can't be held liable.

Yeah, at least you guys have some awesome tracks and lots of events, but when all these laws made up in California eventually make it here, we'll have...nothing.

It seems that 240's in Cali are slowly becoming track-only cars unless you want to keep it almost stock, and I hate track-only cars, they'll always be confined to a patch of asphalt, it makes me depressed, especially when they look good, because to me it's all about that special feeling you get when you see a gangster 240 driving down the road or parked somewhere in a random parking lot. I like to drive my car on the street and listen to my motor rev when I'm in the mood for a scenic drive, I'd take the freedom to drive my modded car on the street over having a track anyday.

By the way don't get me wrong I love California, it's just that being into 240's it makes me upset to hear about the hippie politics and car profiling.

Time to move out of state folks...i heard AZ is better now and Reno is just lovely.

Arizona is not bad. A lot of areas that were previously emissions exempt are requiring emissions now which sucks. OBDII is still plug and pray with a gas cap pressure check. OBDI is a joke, all you need to do is get your car to pass the sniffer, brief visual, and gas cap pressure test.

On a related note, I just had mine done on my latest s14 (OBDII) and the computer couldn't communicate with my car's ecu. However I did not have a cel on so I passed. In fact they didn't even open the hood.

As soon as I can get a spare ecu and harness I am going to rig a OBDII ecu to run in parallell to what ever swap I put in the car. I'll hook it up to control the cel and wire in resistors to the harness to "simulate" the sensors and of course wire it to the obdII plug. Other than the legal aspects I don't see why this wouldn't work. It won't control anything other than simulating that the sensors are all working. I'm done with my tangent now.

Anyway, Commiefornia sucks. You couldn't pay me to live there.

I never understood Cali emissions; I never understood what was wrong with just passing emissions, not inspection. Check engine lights and all the shiet. It just makes more sense to me at least, to just have an emissions test and a vehicle safety inspection. As in as long as it’s safe to drive on the street (witch Cali pays no attention to) and passes emissions it should be fine. The money they would loose would be made up doing safety repairs, so no harm no foul.

I'm not worried about it. The harder the higher ups push against us, the harder we'll push back. Like we're all gonna cave in? Who here would just flat out give up cars? I won't, no matter what the cost. That's like saying if paint was made illegal, people would stop painting. Not gonna happen. People will just be more creative. Paint with blood or something.

Indeed.. That's what made me mad the most when I was getting my last 240 smogged.. The tech was like "this is one of the cleanest burning cars I've tested all day, but I still can't pass you cause your C.E.L came on during the test"

I was fuming cause I'd drive it all the time and the C.E.L would only come on when it was on the rollers... I can understand the need to crack the law down, otherwise im sure things would get out of hand and you would see crazy unsafe shit on the roads, but this stuff hurts businesses and the economy for us people who pretty much live for cars..

Thankfully we've got SEMA.
They've done an excellant job of defeating BS legislation so far, in fact they've gotten similar laws repealed on the east coast involving storage of non-op vehicles.

It's pretty safe to assume that SEMA would put all their considerable political muscle into stopping a ban on old cars.

The "scientists" want you believe that the individual tax paying citizen who drives an auto-mobil with a class C drivers license is to blame.

Cargo Trucks from Mexico, Trains that are running on the same antiquated technology from the 1940s, Diesel ships in the port of Los Angeles (the 2nd most busy port in the country and one the busiest in the world) are actually to blame for up to 80% of the smog in the lower basin. The congestion, OVER-population and lack of accountability just adds to it.

not Joe-Shmo tax paying, law abiding citizen who decides to build a race car in his garage.

That’s their scapegoat. It's such a tiny portion of the population and even if we were to talk about illegal street racing deaths, it is the least contributing situation by statistics by the NTSA ITSELF(0.21% of all deaths in traffic collisions are even street racing related in the United States)!!!

Drunk driving, driving under the influence of drugs, being over tired and many more completely trump street racing deaths.

Yet the sensational news stories about 'street racing' etc keep making it to the front of the news line.

But trumping this card all the time, we are pushed out of our choice to be car enthusiasts and are forced to buy newer and newer trendy cars, like the Prius for example, which when one crashes or is sent to the junkyard is actually 10 times more deadly to the environment thanks to the chemicals in the batteries. It's the equivalent of NUCLEAR WASTE folks...

I mean GOVERNMENT has failed in this country; we at least need a roll back.
