View Full Version : How can you quickly test a DOHC tach?

Hi there. I found a couple threads on tach installs and what not, but nothing on troubleshooting. I have purchased a JDM cluster for the purpose of using with my new SR. I swapped it into my SOHC cluster and was surprised when it didn't work. I put the tach back into the JDM cluster and plugged it in and it still didn't work.

Am I correct when I say that the tach should work in either cluster without modification? Is there a way to easily troubleshoot or test the tach just to confirm that it works?

I purchased this part locally and if it is bad I want to get ahold of the guy ASAP. Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

you need to move your tach wire on your dash harness the yellow with red stripe if i remember right to one of those fatty white wires i dont know how i would tell you which one it is

I really appreciate our input. In the Archive section I read a write up by g6civcx in which he states after swapping the tach into the new cluster it is just plug and play... but again... I appreciate your input. Can anyone clarify... please.

My JDM cluster worked just fine after I did my swap.

As long as you did all the splicing correctly from the the ECU you're all good.

sometimes you have to splice it into one of those fat white wires there is 2 i think. I had to do it on my s13 and it used to be sohc too

Ya, if you did your wiring down buy the ECU correct that is the 1st part.

If not remove the cluster from the car. Look in the FSM for ground and signal in and then add power across it.

Very nice... even a link... +1 = you. I am sure that I did not miss the "color for color" splice but I'll double check... and then I'll take the cluster back! Thank you very much for you input. And thanks to everyone else.

Provided you spliced the wires correctly as described in SR writeups the tach should be plug and play on a SOHC car.

I just wanted to give a follow up for others... turned out to be a bad tach. Picked up another cluster and it worked fine.
