View Full Version : Would this work? another BOV?

Not sure if this has been asked , I searched and found nothing. Ive seen a few rx7's with this setup, but never in the 240land!

Theres alot of talk about whether to put your BOV on the cold or hot side. Ive always ran on the hot, but have been thinking of going cold.

Now heres my question, Can you use 1 BOV for each side? One on hot and one on cold? Would this be a bad idea, would it even function, or would it possibly benefit? Im asking this for an sr20det that will be between 600-700 hp. Like I said, Ive seen some RX-7's with this type of setup, and they praised it all to the heavens and back! Anyone ever tried or have proved opinions on this?

Thanks,
Brian

BOV dumps the air charge between your turbo and the TB. Most of the volume is in the inter cooler. Mounting it on the cold pipe is the best cause as you dump the air from the IC it keeps the flow going in the same direction. On the hot side it back flows out of the IC. Arguably the response gains would prolly be minimal.

People start running 2 BOVs when their FIMC is so honking big one BOV can't dump fast enough. Unless you have compressor surge even with the BOV dumping I wouldn't waste my time.

Put it on the cold side.

my SR is the only turbo car I've ever had that the BOV is on the hotside. With that said, I would go cold if given the choice.

silly question...but what about mounting it on the intercooler itself???

^

That won't work with a bar and plate intercooler...

You're suppose to put the BOV as close to the throttle body as possible so minimize loss of air in the pipes. With that said my BOV is pretty damn close to the turbo and I doubt moving it to the cold side would make any noticeable difference.

I've seen it done before, but like Koopa said, the idea is to get the BOV as close to the throttle body as possible.

Cold side. As close to the TB as you can.

Seen two bov's on a ka-t setup years ago at a JSPEC meet. At the time the guy swore by it for his high boost aplication. Other than that I've only seen 2 bov setups on rotaries.

Yes 2 bov's will work, but unless you're running a bucketload of boost (like 20psi +) then i don't see how it would provide any benefit. you'd be better off just buying a quality bov and mounting it as close to the throttle body as possible.

Theoretically it would work but I'd imagine you'd have trouble adjusting both valves so they'll open at the same time.

its more of a preference thing but i like to think of it this way...
with the bov on the hot side you vent hot compressed air, and the engine can still recieve the colder air that was in the intercooler as it revs down. plus theres still volume of air for the intercooler to recieve when you open the throttle again and the turbo doesnt have to fill in the missing air again that the bov vented if it was placed near the throttle body....its a matter of a secong for air to decompress but thats how i like to think when this question comes up...

So I know my CA will hate me when I vent the SSQV but would the stumble that is associated be better/worse with it cold/hot side?

with the ssqv id just adjust the adjusting bolt tight enough to vent properly and close fast enough to where the engine doesnt die, and place the bov on the hot side.

Thanks for the input guys.

My real question was to put one bov on the cold pipe, and one on the hotpipe. Not either or, and not a dual setup on each side. But to have one on each side. I think some of you understood what I was asking, and some think I was asking which side to mount on. I appreciate all the help regardless. Right now Im running one Tial 50mm BOV w/11lb spring on Hotside. But Im getting ready to crank up to 28 psi for some dyno pulls. I know the Tial should be good , but didnt know if maybe I could benefit or a safety percaution of throwin another Tial on the Coldside? Or if I did do duals, should I keep them on one side? Or would it just be kinda a waste? Some answers are making me think, yes its doable, and may not benefit much, if any?
