Go to sears and buy a set of there stripped nut socket things they work great, the hardest part is getting the nut back out of the tool

use some pb blaster on it to loosen it up

What dousan said....

or if you only have simple tools:

drill a hole through the nut and bolt, and put a nail through, then use vice grips or whatever. I used this method for a stripped nut holding the back of the differential to my car.

Edit: Nevermind, this method only works with studs.

^^^ Yeah there are "nut removers" that have "jaws" on the inside, and a hex outer (so you can put them in a wrench or socket) - they bite onto the stripped nut and pull it off the bolt. Then you get to try and push it out of the removal tool later. Like EZ-outs, it's a set of tools you'd like to only buy once.

There's always vice grips - clamp em on there real tight, spray some WD-40/PB Blaster, and try not to round off any more of the nut.

The other option, especially if you don't mind screwing up the bolt, is to dremel the shit out of it until you can pry it off/until it loosens.

fire. lots and lots of it. j/k.
+1 for pb blaster. and if for some reason you can't make it to sears, you can always try pounding the next smaller size socket on (sometimes it works better if you find the next smaller standard socket instead of metric) with a bfh.

+1 for vise grips. usually does the job for me.

To prevent it, use a torch if your having a hard time breaking the nut loose.

just so you know, those sears stripped nut sockets dont work on severely stripped bolts, if you have easy access to the bolt, cutting it off is the sure bet, like dousan said.

I take my little circle grinder out.

then I grind one side flat.(almost to the threads). Then grind the opposite side.(almost to the threads again). going to the edge of the threads lets the nut loosen a little when you put the crescent wrench on and twist that guy off.

works great every time!

WTF! buy damn screw/bolt extractor. with the proper size drill bit. whats wrong with everybody gringing and cuting bolts? spend 5 bucks on 2 drill bits.

i dont get how u severely strip a bolt/nut.

Make sure you dont get it to that point.

Also, when you use the sears out sockets, you should hammer it on to get a real tight fit so you shouldnt have trouble.

thanks for the advice, i ended up getting the sears 13 piece kit and it worked as if it wasnt stripped, and i tell u this nut was hella rounded out.

o yea i did try to hammer the next smaller size socket but no luck.

when auto zone is a 10 minute drive one way, its just easier to get the grinder out sometime.
Plus I have snapped numerous bolts off because the nut wont budge no matter what you do.
and not everyone has a full tool kit in their garage or the funds/space :)

works like a charm.

if you want to be cheap.... i just hammer a next size down socket on there and break it loose with a socket wrench. worked like a charm several times for me and i got it out of the socket afterwards.

sighh.. i didn't read the above posts.

I think you're smokin dope. A 13 wont fit one a 14 bolt no matter how hard you hammer as i tried that today. Not even close.
Anywho if you seriously have trouble takin it off and its rounded. Like dousan said. Use a grinder and grind it of or an acetelyne torche. Had to grind one off today actually.

Ya that tool set saved me a lot of time and grief when I stripped out my engine mount bolt on the chassis side.

isntead of a going metric for next size up use SAE they're closer when you want the next size up without going a full 1mm, plus SAE shit is garbage; use a craftsman and break it than return it for a new one

usually you try to fit a size lower...when you stripped the fuck out of it....

haha, it happens trust me.

i know what you're saying about dont get it to that point, but when you work on other peoples' cars, what happens before it gets into your hands is pretty much out of your control. i just stated that those sears sockets wont "do it all."

either cut it off with dremmel or disk grinder.. or weld just weld bolt to it and then try to take it off. but better luck cutting it off it takes a whole 2 seconds.

a lot of people don't have access to a dremmel, disk grinder etc. especially a welder
