View Full Version : Auto computer bypass/removal?

So I have a 92 240 auto and I swapped in a 5-speed sr. My question is regarding the auto computer (not the ecu that I re-wired for the E5 blacktop sr ecu I'm taking about the smaller computer under the arm rest) I believe it controlled the shifting of the auto ka motor. So how can I remove it, does anyone know which necessary wires to splice together and allow me to toss it. The reason I ask is because I'm in the slow process of removing unnecessary wires like the rear window wiper that I removed and so on, the cars an LE. I remember someone saying that you need to keep it connected even though its not doing anything, I've searched here and on Nico and I guess I could try to trace each wire from the FSM but it will probably just give me a headache:faint: , any help would be appreciated.:bigok:

My only experience is with ka auto/5spd swapped s14's. IIRC when you do a 5spd swap all the auto stuff gets bypassed when you use the 5spd ecu. I installed a 5spd ecu on my s14 after I finished the 5spd swap and was able to completely remove the auto computer with no issues. I hope that helps.

I'm talking about the secondary shift point computer that's behind the shifter/under the arm rest, not the ecu on the side of the passenger foot well. I haven't tried to just disconnect it and see what happens I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to cut the plug that go's into it and splice some wires together.

What I am saying is that when your sr ecu harness was spliced in ALL the auto stuff is bypassed. You should just be able to remove the box because it isn't doing anything. Check it's harness with a multi-meter and see if it has any current if it makes you feel better about the whole thing.
Your sr is in the 5spd configuration with a 5spd sr ecu. The auto control box isn't doing anything.

I never noticed or remember any auto tranny computer in/under/around the center cousel area.
The only computer or box I know of in that area is the auto seat belt controller.
If it is something else post pics.

That the auto seatbelt ECU. The auto gearbox ECU is located near the engine ECU.

^ werd. :)
You can remove the box - located near the ECU. If you really want, you can undo the harness and save the 3 oz's or whatever of wiring is left - there's only one wire from there which goes back to the ECU (but is not used if you remove the box).

For the "auto" seatbelts well I guess I need it then thanks for the input guys, I remember the cruise control computer near the ecu which I removed. So a 6"x4"x1" gold box just for the seat-belts weird, well the car was first made in 89 so.... thanks again guys.
