View Full Version : SR: Ran out of gas, now my car is crap!

Alright, here's how it went. First off, my car fuel gauge doesn't work, neither does the low in gas light. I hardly use the 240, but yesterday I was planning on installing new rear speakers so I was headed to my brother in law's house and that's when I ran out of gas, on my way over. Well, put gas in the tank (twice just to make sure) and the car would not stay at idle. It would at times crank up and idle for like 5 seconds and die back down. Well, after a few hours of this ordeal, we decided to tow the car back home (about .5 miles, luckily). Today, we tried again. At first, the car would idle for more than 10 seconds but die back down. We then unplugged the AFM and TPS and tried it that way, well, guess what? the car would crank up and stay at idle, but once we connect the AFM it would die again, same with the TPS.
The weird thing is that it would turn on without these two things connected, but when either or is plugged back in, the car would die.
I've searched regarding this, but no luck. If anyone has gone through this before, please post comments of how you corrected the problem. Thanks!
Happy new year!

Running out of gas is terrible on the fuel pump. You probably damaged it permanently.

the walbro fuel pumps can be damaged when you let your fuel tank get below 1/4 of a tank since they are physically smaller than the stock units, I dont know what the damage entails but that might be the problem

Fuel lubricates your fuel pump, and keeps it cool.

I do have a walbro pump. So, how is it that the car idles fine when the TPS and AFM are unplugged? This is the part am not getting. If someone can explain, I'd appreciate it. Either way, I will try to exchange my fuel pump tomorrow to see how that goes. Thank folks!

change the maf

why should I change the MAF?

yeah - its not like running outta fuel ruined the maf and tps -
I suggest being sure its got a full tank, unhook batt for a bit, hook back up and then click to on and listen for the whir of the fuel pump priming up. If you cant hear it - walbros are loud - theres something wrong there. Also u should be able to hear it while th ecar is running.
i dunno about the tps and maf... maybe in limp mode the car does something different with the fuel pump???

I know I could hear the fuel pump priming, but am still going to exchange it to see what happens. I'll put more gas in it, too, just to see. I did put around 5 gallons after I ran out.

You sure it initially ran out of gas?

^^^ True that, could have been your fuel pump that fucked up first and not the actual running out of fuel.

I would start with the maf, then the tps... I dont think its a fuel issue or ot woudlnt start over and over, after a few starts it would run out of gas in the lines. Its something else..

sounds like you have shitty MAF, try changing it out
sounds exactly like the problem i had when i had a huge vaccume leak (read: blew off a intercooler coupler)

wouldn't that be a boost leak?

make sure you also check your FPR to make sure your not leaking any fuel in to the vacuum line..

My bet is that u have a vacuum leak and u didnt run out of gas. Double check all ur hoses and pipes first

Also: If you did indeed run out of gas, I'd change your fuel filter once you get things straightened out. When you run the tank dry like that, it has a way of sucking shit up from the bottom of the tank and clogging the fuel filter. At least, my 88 Celica had a way of doing that, I must have changed the fuel filter like 5 times over ~40,000 miles.
I probably should have just kept the tank full :(

fuel pump clogged, gas tanks rust from inside, could be clogged up.
also fuel filter, maybe clogged.
you should change the pump anyway, you should have a upgraded pump
and get a z32 fuel filter.
If running out of fuel is your issue, these should fix it!

Well, the fuel pump is new walbro. Probably less than 100 miles on it and the fuel filter is new z32 as well. I don't use this car at all. its been a project for the past year and now is when it started coming along. I just use it to go around the block until I get her body straight. I know what a boost leak feels like and this was no boost leak. I know I ran out of gas. I could hear the fuel pump priming air into the system and no gas. I think I f up the fuel pump and filter. Like many have said, running low in gas will cause the pump to suck up all the junk from the tank. I guess I'll take it as a positive since the car had bad gas in the tank from when I bought it any ways. I will post my results once I replace these parts or test with borrowed ones. Thanks for all the inputs.

i would say first off disconnect the battery for at least 15 min to reset everything. next i would say if that dosnt work then it could be a vacuum leak..
what happends when you give it a little gas after its been started to try and keep up the idle enouph to not shut off?

I tried the battery trick, didn't work. When try giving it gas, it dies down.

Are you throwing any codes from the ecu?

anyways. you could have cloged your injecters, fuel pump strainer, and/or your fuel filter. also you could have overheated your pump. my sugestion is to buy them all at your local parts store and install all of the parts except the injecters and see what it does. and if all else fails pull the injecters and clean them out or send them out to be rebuilt.

Check them to see if anything pops up and go from there.

Well, I finally pulled out the fuel pump and notice the little hose from the pump to the line was damaged. I ended up changing the FP with another walbro I had laying around and obviously a new piece of hose. Turned the key and the car started right up. That's all good, but now I have a boost leak somewhere that doesn't allow me to step on it as it won't rev past 3.5K rpms. as if it had a rev limiter or something. This shit is getting old.
In summary, I never really ran out of gas, although it seemed like it, it was the hose that burst and wasn't holding pressure so the car died every time I'd give it gas.
Thanks for all the inputs guys.
Peace!

Glad to see your fixing some of your issues. Hopefully you'll be back to 100% soon.

sounds like your MAF is disconnected if your not able to rev past 3.5k rpms, did you unplug it during troubleshooting and forget to plug it back in?

Yeah, am starting to feel the same. For some reason the car hasn't been friendly to me at all through ownership.
I just bought a hot pipe and will be installing a new greddy BOV to see if that fixes my boost leak. The hot pipe I currently have, I made it and did some JB Weld job with it and even used duct tape (gettho) around the welded spot. I'm starting to suspect this is my culprit and the BOV I currently have. hopefully once I replace these two, the car be back to 100%. I'll be getting my open diff welded as well, if this fixes my boost leak problem. Pray for me guys, pray!

We'll see Emilio (my bro-in-law), if the hotpipe doesn't work, I leave it. I'll be driving the SC to work by then. :2f2f:

you know, when you want the car to move you'll do whatever. lol
I had the car garaged for a long time and once I put the SR in it, I was ready to move her out. The thing is, I wanted to buy a stock hot pipe, but it never came my way, so I made my own. I should be getting the new aftermarket hotpipe tomorrow, so yeah, I hope this fixes the problem. :naughty:
