I nailed it and didn't let the car warm up. Next thing I know the oil light comes on and I check under the hood and the oil filter had blown off. How hard is it to change the filter housing. and why did it blow off?

It is really hard to get pictures of the filter housing because of were it is located. I drove the car for like 2 weeks after my oil change and it was perfectly fine. I let it sit for about 1 week and yesterday I got it to it. and nailed it and the oil filter blew off and strip the threading on the housing. I am wondering why this happened.

You or the shop that did the oil change stripped the housing. I would think that there are a few low bolts inside the lip of the housing but if it is not like that then I have no clue.

I don't think I stripped the threading because I just snugged it. I have pretty good mechanical skills so I am sure I would know if it was stripped. I wonder if the engine could have built enough pressure to blow the filter off.

I have NEVER heard of the oil filter blowing off, even if you didn't let the car warm up.

Do you have any mods?

Just a stock redtop in a S13. I feel the threading on the housing and they feel fine. Put I try to put the old filter back on and it doesn't work. it like the threading is not there and it is not catching anything. I bought a new filter and it feels just the same. So I test it on my spare SR block and the filter screws right in. Due to the cold right now I didn't have the time to take out the housing and examine it up close. So I am really clueless of what happen. My friend that works on race cars tells me when your car first starts and it is cold the Oil pressure spikes really high.

Good time to invest in an oil relocation kit ;)

I might have to do that the oil filter is a pain to get too. Yeah I just really don't want to rebuild the engine. But if I put everything back in and I hear knocking then I am probley going to have to start ordering new pistons and rods.

wow you must have a block in your oiling systemer after the filter...that is the only thing that would cause enough oil pressure to build and shoot the filter off...good luck with that and post pics of the filter...

I would like to know what filter you used as well. Are you sure they put the right filter on your car?

That is what I was about to ask. Maybe the filter that was used wasn't the right filter. Maybe it looked like the right size and everything, but it was meant to be placed on another motor. If you still have the oil filter, I would look for the part number on it.

Very interesting, in all my years of looking at Nissan forums, I never heard anything like this before.

Could have been the wrong threading. I forget which is bigger, but I believe the s14 style filter is m20 x ?? and is slightly bigger than the s13's 3/4 -16 threading. It will just barely thread on. This could have been your problem.

If you really want to replace you oil filter housing you can try this. This will enable you to relocate your oil filter. I broke off some of the threads on mine but I was lucky enough that my oil filter still threads on. I am planning on replacing my oil fiter housing and relocating my oil filter.

S14 filters are larger but noticeably larger.. I doubt he could snug a 14 filter... I know because I constantly buy 13 filters by mistake.. ALL THE FILTER SAYS IS Silvia SR20DET!! Assholes! :madfawk:

Anyways I'm guessing you stripped the threads and the sudden change in oil pressure popped it off...

for s14 sr i used z33 filtes
small an dperfect

anyways
its very easy to change that part
4 bolts
u can use a unit from s13 to s15 (s15 uses same filter as s14)

i blew my filter off w/ my relocation kit
blew off twice
i busted a house once too dumped oil everywhere
good times
motor was fine. i did notice it (defi lights bleeping)

so dont worry.
just replace and keep an eye out on your oil pressures

yeah that oil adapter is the shit saved my old SR motor...

happened to me. i think as long as you caught it in time and shut off the motor youll be ok. make sure that there is only 1 o-ring on the filter. i did mine at night and have done plenty of oil changes but neglected to make sure that when i took off the old one, the o-ring was there. so basically i had 2 of em in there. got around the corner and floored it and the oil light came on. left a trail of oil in front of my friends house.

It happens because the filters are made different.. I only use the oem z33 15208-65F for my s14sr The threading and rubber lip of other filters are different and will allow the filter to blow off. It happened to me and I took the filters apart before I believed there was a difference.

Is the S14 housing still the same as the S13 because it seems like the threading is a bit longer and also the sensor is angled differently. Will it still work on the S13 engine?

are you sure you didn't double gasket it?

I can add this much to this thread, S13 & S14 SR20DET filter's are not interchangable, I think someone has mentioned that already. The brackets interchangablity on the block im not sure of but you must use the correct filter with whichever oil filter you end up useing.

are you sure you didn't double gasket it?

Yeah I am 100 percent sure because I double checked it when I got the car towed home. I think what happen is I used a S14 filter on a S13 housing. By the way does anyone know the part number for the S14 filter and the S13 filter. I want to be 100 percent sure so this doesn't happen again.

The first picture is to show the difference in how much deeper the S14 is compare to the S13 oil housing unit. The S14 is on the right and the S13 is on the left. Second pictures shows how much longer the threading is on the S14 Unit compare to the S13 unit. Third picture the blue filter is the filter I had on the S13 oil housing unit and it worked fine for 2 weeks. I been using that same type of filter for 2 years and going now. Then it blew off and it is like the thread on the oil filter housing is smaller then the oil filter. But the filter fits on the S14 housing without a problem now. Last night I took the S14 housing and slapped it on my Redtop. I lucked out this time and I didn't hear a rod knock so I assume the engine is fine. Can someone tell me if the filter on the right is the right one for a S14 Housing. Because I used the exactly same filter on my S13 housing before it blew off. Thanks

Explain. I don't get what you mean by that.

REPLACEMENT PARTS (S13 SR20DET RED/BLACK TOP ONLY, UNLESS NOTED):
Oil filter (S13 SR20DET)
15208-53J00
91-94 Sentra SE-R

(S14SR20DET)
95 Sentra SE-R

I found this in the Sr facts

Should have did more research 3 years ago. Everything was running fine so I thought I had the right part.

This is some good info, I'm just about to change my oil too. I'll have to make sure I have the right filter.
