long distance trips with an sr20...

I seem to see a bit of posts about peoples problems with sr’s.  Of course it is a salvaged engine, considering getting it from like heavy throttle or unstable…

Should it be dependable, in stock performance levels, on long distance trips, like over 1k miles at a time, possibly as long as 3k.  This is kind of a faulty question I guess, what I mean is, *if* you broke down in the middle of a thousand mile trip and needed something more than a plug or hose and such, would you be screwed?  Considering that, it isn’t a US market motor of course as we all know, how hard would it be to get a part for on the road (basically, my biggest fear).

3k mile trip your gonna need at least 1 oil change.. Ok if something major happens, like you throw a rod or something, guess what, it doesn't matter what your driving, your "screwed". But if you don't drive like an idiot (cruising in 3rd gear, etc.) I don't see why theres going to be a problem because highway miles are the easiest miles you'll ever put on a car.

been wondering the same thing myself.

obviously it can be very reliable, i mean it is a mass produced motor in japan. compare it to say a TSI which ironically is a nutorious lemon.

i would think that you would be kinda screwed if any part that is only available in japan goes out on you. they are available through jspec and enjuku, but it will take a few days. so AAA or in my case CAA is prolly a must for a tow, because it'll prolly be a while before you get her going again.

but again, it is a factory motor, so it should have nissan factory reliablity if healthy

I run my stock ca18 for pretty long distances not 1000+ miles at a time but pretty far and it doesn't make a sound. A engine is the same anywhere, if its in poor condition don't drive to far if it's in good condition it will make the trip easily.

Ummm. &nbsp;No. &nbsp;Those mileage change intervals are suggested based on the age of the oil and the driving conditions. &nbsp;Cruising at 85 for extended periods is EASY on oil and EASY on an engine. &nbsp;Racing is what's tough on them.

The very first drive I made with my SR was 700 miles from Kansas City to Champaign, Illinois. &nbsp;Piece of cake. &nbsp;The SR loves to cruise. &nbsp;And freeway passing is THE sweetest thing in that car. &nbsp;Just roll on the throttle and you're GONE. &nbsp;85-100 happens REALLY fast...especially in 4th.

Don't worry about driving your car. &nbsp;That's what it's for. &nbsp;Only PITA is not having cruise control....

I drove my sr20 on a 14hr drive a week after my swap with no problems.

yeah, your wrong.. change your oil frequently.. at my house we change it every 1500miles. Im sure Im gonna get flamed for this, but guess what? How many of you have cars with 300k miles, never rebuilt, on the stock clutch? (clutch has nothing to do with oil, but it justs proves the fact that i know how to maintain cars)

I have a drive coming up to VIR and that is appx. 4.5 hrs from my house. &nbsp;I will be doing it w/ my SR. &nbsp;I, like Loren, change my oil every month. &nbsp;With the heat that a turbocharged engine produces it would be wise to do the same thing. &nbsp;Regular flushes of the coolant and changing the tranny and differential fluid at least once a year is also a good idea. &nbsp;It's all about regular maintenace that makes a good engine great.

thank you for starting this discussion because that was my major concern with the engine not knowing if we could drive LD w/o problems although i dont have her yet shes gettin ordered in DEC my christmas present to me.

That's simply a waste. &nbsp;You are living in 1950. &nbsp;Oil technology is better. &nbsp;Oil filtration is better. &nbsp;Engine parts are better and last longer. &nbsp;Air filters are better. &nbsp;Everything is better.

If you think you honestly need to change the oil every month when you're just mainly using the car to drive around town (like me), you're delusional. &nbsp;Now, if we're talking about a race car that hits the track 3 times a month, that's a completely different story.

But that's NOT what we're talking about. &nbsp;The question was if you can drive 3000 miles in an SR. &nbsp;You said you'd need an oil change. &nbsp;And I still say that's a huge load of shit. &nbsp;You do NOT need to stop in Kansas on the way from NY to CA to get new dinosaurs poured into your crankcase. &nbsp;Simple as that.
