So I think my car is running rich. I just started it and let it warm up. It was in the garage with the door open and just idle it smelled a little like gas and I took it to about 3k and it started to smell strongly like gas. So me being smart I took it to just below 5k and it ran fine but after I turned it off I looked at the exhaust and a bunch of black shit spewed out and the exhaust was smoking a lot......but in a weird way.

The only think I could come up with is my car is running rich and since I dont know anything about jack could anyone here help me with ways to lean it out? Im thinking air/fuel controller but are there any easy or cheaper ways to do it?

Oh and last thing is there any way I could tell if its running rich? Like a way to test it and get an actual reading saying "this much fuel" to "this much air"?

thx in advance guys

What kind of motor do you have and is it stock or have you modified it? Also how many miles on it? Is the smoke and black shit the only issue you've had or is it hard starting too?

Yes I would check the O2 sensor, and check the coolant temp sensor aswell because when that goes bad you will run super rich. I just had that problem not to long ago with my KA.
