View Full Version : What's the most difficult car you've ever driven?

1947 Plymouth Special. Straight six, 3 on the tree, no power steering, and it weighed an ass-ton. Very complicated to get it to start, had to mess with the choke and throttle and pump the gas 1000 times and crank it forever. It also liked to pop out of gear sometimes.

Post up! =D

I only drove one once. That was enough. Hydraulics kick the back of the back of the cab out to assist with turns. Beats the hell out of you in the front.

I wasn't supposed to be the one driving it anyway, but it still sucked.

i've driven an 18 wheeler and a '00 ford F350 quad cab, long bed, dually 4x4. neither were particularly difficult to drive, given enough room. that's the key though, the ford had almost the same turning radius as the stirling. i even backed the 18 wheeler into a parking loading dock on the first try.

probably the hardest was driving an '07 superduty six pack (same as above minus the dually) through the streets of Seoul. some of those streets are tight for a sedan.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not difficult to drive, more like awkward. I never drove an SUV before at the time...only cars. Felt kinda weird sitting up so high. I've gotten used to it since then.

i drove a mercury sable with four blown shocks and a bad tps, and it made me nauseous.

Other than that i learned to drive stick on a car with a dogbox. We ended up not ever shifting gears though, i just learned to start going, because every time i shifted shit would grind.

Now that i think about it, who lets a noob drive on their $3000 or so transmission...haha

A 1940's unibody/bed truck, 3 on the tree as well. No power steering obviously, and getting it into gear when you have no clue how to drive 3 on the tree is a biatch.

I had to drive a huge city bus for six months to take myself and 20 of my co-workers to work everyday. It was difficult to drive but kind of fun too.

Not too bad.

Now there's nothing big that I feel I can't drive.

haha my first 240 that had no fuckin oil in it when the guy sold it to me(didnt check cause who really has NO oil in their car?) car basically died on me one day and the engine was just fucked after that....car wouldnt do over like 70 on the highway and the subframe was fucked and would knock around HARD every time I shifted....it would also take forever to pick up any kind of power when i stepped on the gas and sometimes wouldnt go into gear, and oh yeah I got pulled over every week for the entire summer that year.....so yeah it was a real POS lol

Mine would be in high school...early 90's range rover, 5spd, no PS, No brakes, slipping clutch and the gas pedal liked to get stuck from time to time..

when my first car (a 1989 olds cutlass ciera) decided that its transmission was going to slam into every gear, that sucked.....my 1991 lebaron convertable...the passenger door wouldnt stay shut, so i bungee corded it shut....the list goes on.

Haha, that reminds me of when my friend bought a car and then when he took a turn hard the low oil sloshed to the side and the oil pressure dropped to zero, causing the timing chain to jump and the engine to lock up.

My sisters 2 tone volkswagen vanagon. 2 tone brown and creme. No powersteering constantly breaking down. Had to pop into neutral and rev to keep it started. Doesnt brake. doesnt go fast had to work the key in the ignition to get it to start. Drive that for a summer and you could join the swoll patrol.

My friend's 32 GTR with no power steering, 50/50 AWD and diffs with initial torque so high the car feels like it hops when making a U turn

or my car with a twin plate and a bad master/slave cylinder... Transmission wouldn't go in gear and it's my only car... I had to constantly turn the car off, put it in gear and then start the car only to not be able to get out of first or second gear or I'd just leave the car in third and pray I was on a downhill...

'65 Mustang with a VERY healthy big block. 4speed. 4 wheel drum brakes (none of which worked very well). No powersteering. Super skinny rear tires. Stiff ass clutch.
Traction was nearly non-existant in this thing, and forget about trying to stop quickly... Fuck that car. It should've had big disk brakes all around and drag radials, but no, people gotta go cheap and do nothing but motor work. lol

Secondary to that would either be my old '87 Celica, which shut off constantly, was a bitch to start, and was just overall super unreliable, OR my buddy's '89 Celica AllTrac. Push starting a heavy ass 4wd car with a stiff clutch, and brakes that like to lock up on their own due to a bad brake booster is NOT fun. lol

Friend's 2000 VW Jetta
Going from my car to the Jetta.
Stiff-ass clutch to a sponge feels like I have zero feel in the pedal. I just about bust my foot through the firewall every time I drive the car.
The clutch in blown out because my friend rides the clutch FOREVER (goes through a clutch every year). Pedal is super long and takes forever to disengage so my knee is past the steering wheel by the time I've shifted.
90fwhp (?) gets me nowhere.

He now wants a Z33. I wish him the best.

It's not really a difficult car to drive, I just hate driving it.

The most difficult car I've driven was my car in eight inches of snow. I couldn't get out of the driveway...

1: 1990 mercury sable, on the freeway, in the rain, up a hill (water is sheeting down the road), With REALLY bald tires. Also same car, same conditions, same tires, on a mountain road.
2: 1982 porsche 911sc, super springy clutch, and the driver's footwell was so tight that I had to take my shoes off to keep my feet from fighting with eachother. Fuckin fast car though.
3: 1988 chevy corvette, super HEAVY steering, and the seat was so skinny it damn near crushed my balls.

Toyota Prius - everything about it is stupid. Actually driving it is fine, just really boring. Getting started in it pissed me right off though.

Toyota FJ - oh, yeah, love that 4' x 2' windshield

98 Protege with stupid stiff suspension, out of alignment, with massive bumpsteer, in winter. Ever try and push a shopping car really fast across a parking lot in winter? Same idea.

Funny you posted that, as I was going to Post up a Old 916, or 984 Hemtt Wrecker....both don't turn for shit, both have that unstopable death bounce, and both are a handful at 60+ MPH on MSR's and ASR's lol. The 1078 PLS trucks were like a Caddilac to the 984s

The hardest thing I've driven was a late 60's ford full size truck. It had a custom flatbed that covered the window and none of the mirrors would stay put. No p/s. The clutch sliped horribly and the shifter throw was like a foot and a half. The driver's side door leaked, so you got wet in the rain. And only one wipper worked.
God I hated that pile of shit.

1972 bmw 2002tii, clutch slave cylinder was leaking, so i had to start the car in first, and revmatch to shift every other gear. driving with no clutch. but then i started having starter issues, more ignition issues than starter, so i had to run a wire direct. so then the wire was outside in the hood to start the car, but i wouldnt be able to get it in gear once it was started so that was interesting. then the idle started rising slowly from 1.5k to 2 then 3 then finally idled at 4k rpm sitting at a red light, but by this point i had fixed the clutch so i was burning the clutch to keep the rpms down! wooh, fun car. plus the air fuel mixture was not right, so it smelled like shit. the headlights didnt always work.

this was the most difficult car to drive, but at the same time the most fun. and i love the car.

My old jeep cherokee. 315,xxx miles when I got it. 331,XXX three years later when my father gave it to a poor lady who walked to my moms job.

Hell where do i start...when I first go it, it had no radiator fan. That was cool though cuz it was in the winter time. The coolant reservoir tank also had major crack in it, though that wasnt discovered until I bought the radiator fan, 8 months later.

It would randomly idle as high as 2.7K rpms, if I put it into drive while it was goin that it would get itslelf up to 30 without me touching the gas.

the heater didnt work, but yet the ac kinda did. It got between 10-14 miles to gallon. The lights were so old that when I took it out to change it, it fell apart in my hands.

When I tried to take loose a radiator hose, I actually pulled the hose out with a piece of radiator. My harmonic balalnce separated into two pieces while I was drivng. I had to leave it in a parking lot for three days and wait for my father to come down and fix it. ( I am not the most mechanical person) The same day he fixed it my brakes decided to finish wearing out, where I believe the guy same the calipers were scraped the brake disk.

It had this issue, where if it was driven for more than like an hour and a half it wouldnt stay cranked. Unless you treated it like a manual and kept the rpms above 1000.

My turn signal stopped working twice, not electrical, the handle itself. My fuel pump went out. Right before I gave it up, it would sometimes idle really low, like in the 100-300 rpm range.

The shocks were stiff as hell, so it corner really well, but a speed bump felt like a log.

My starter decided to go out on the day of my highschool senior picnic that i had been waiting four years for, so yea I and the three people that were ridin with me, missed that one.

None of the wires matched up. Say for instance the ground wire for the radio was yellow. The speaker wires started out black and green with black stripe, but ended up, purple and orange I think.

It blew oil out of the top of the block through the PC valve. I went through about a bottle every week and a half depending on how much I drove.

For a while one tire was damn near made of fix-a-flat. It didnt have a horn, or airbags, there was a metal bolt holding the horn piece on.

The passenger seat didnt move up or down, and the drivers seat didnt lock in, so if i slammed on brakes the seat would come forward.

Speaking of brakes, I once slammed on brakes doing 45, they sucked so much the tires didnt even squeal, it kinda just rolled to a stop.

Other than that small list of things, the jeep was in perfect condition

I grew up on a 1600 acre farm, and learned to drive as soon as I could reach the pedals, some before. But these are the ones as a kid I remember being hard.

We only had a 5 row cultivator but this was tough. Its easy to drive the equipment but cultivating if your off to the right or left just 3 inches your destroying everything behind you. You cant look back to check yourself, you have to stare straight ahead and focus. You arent creeping along either, your moving at like 10mph which seems like a lot when doing this.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mnkymits/Row-Crop-Cultivator-LI49064.jpg

^^I actually hit a deer in a middle of the field years ago. It ran off but I couldnt see it, usually the crop is much much taller, 3-4 ft.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mnkymits/stackwagon.jpg

These SUCK. Its like a tour bus, loaded weighs 21-21K with those tires its all over the road at 50mph. Im getting frustrated just thinking about it. F'n Perkins motors.

could be my fc when i had 3 degrees toe out in the front. it wouldn't drive straight for shit. it was swerve city. i let the local fc guru drive it and he almost hit the curb on a straight road. haha! it turned REALLY WELL though.

i would say my mom's 2000 honda crv. that thing is weak! a couple of things to make it right though. adjust the valves, because when it's cold the car dies out. and the diff fluid needs to be changed because it makes this nasty rubbing noise when i turn. so bad that i can't even bust small u-turns; i bust them hella wide. i'm pretty sure the shock needs to be replaced to. damn that car, i'm driving my echo.

I haven't driven a whole lot of things... I would have to say an older Astro work van... No rear windows and no mirrors; I had to back it into a space, too. That or my shitty S13 with horribly blown struts.

i drove a blown Mitsu GSX into mexico. it would only go 24 mph. took a long time to get there, bogged out, sputtered.... getting it over the us/mexico border was the scariest shit with border patrol staring at me passing by. i had to be on the freeway for a couple miles so that sucked.

What was the reason why you had to do that?

My first car was an '82 320i. It had a exhaust leak into the cabin, so every time I came home I was 'suspiciously tired'. I always rode with the windows down and the sunroof back. I still ride like that today :). But I got the problem fixed and had not know what it was. Sold it later for $200 less than I bought it.

i drove this crummy 355 spyder, no power steering, and the gears were hard to get in and the clutch was heavy, really big pain in the ass to move around in a car show. Also tried to move this heavily modifed RX-7 and the clutch was heavy as fuck, had such a small release point and the revs would drop like a rock.

93 Dodge Grand Caravan...330+k miles on it;
-Wiring gremlin so the lights randomly turn on and that ding noise goes off a lot
-Head unit is broke so radio can't be used, had to use a tape adapter for my iPod. No CD player.
-AC BUSTED
-Power steering is fucked up
-All the suspension is BLOWN. I have to make turns at 10mph or the chassis sounds like its ripping apart.
-Headlights sucked.
-13mpg.
-No back seats...well that was a good thing a few times...
-Burnt a lot of oil.
-Only had a valet key, passenger had to let me in.
-Mold and smelliness when i originally got it.
-BEAT THE FUCK UP, I looked so sketchy

TIE

1.) An S13 I once bought for $50 in DC. I could only apparently select gears 1 through 3, and it only stopped with the e-brake. I had to keep the revs up at every stoplight or it would stall out and die. Luckily I never drove this thing more than a few miles.

Oddly enough, with new MTF, the trans worked great. Brakes were an easy fix, too bad the frame was rusted to shit or I would've kept it. I still got $1050 for it though, LOL. (2000% profit roflchopterz)

2.) Friend's Dad's Lamborghini Countach

OH did this thing piss me off. I mean, it's great in that visceral "flying atomic wedge of death" sort of way, but it's seriously not much of a car. The seating position and general visibility is fucking awful, the gated shifter is an obstacle at best, the clutch required Herculean strength, and it didn't brake particularly well.

I mean, it was fun, it wasn't horrible, I'm glad I had the experience of driving one, but "difficult" definitely sums it up. It looks otherworldly and it's got that Italian "nutso" quality about it, it's fun in it's own way just because it's so "out there", but I'd never want to own one. I can say confidently that a bone-stock NA6 Miata is more fun to drive than a Lamborghini Countach is. This was an earlier one, an LP400S I think.

What's funny is that I've also driven a 512TR and it was SO much better, like way way way better. It was really fun, it was responsive, I didn't feel like I was in some kind of spaceship-coffin, et cetera.

My freinds 300zx after he got t-boned. The car was litterally bent, had to crawl in through the passanger side, glass on the seat, pedal hard to get to past the chasis and It didnt want to move. Had to get it out the road becaus people kept almost hitting it. Dumb fucking people.

My own.

I "knew" how to drive a 5-speed car, but I would stall for the most part. Not to mention I didn't know how to rev-match, downshift, etc etc.

This was driving a regular 5-speed car.

When I swapped my car from auto to manual, I went "all out" and did my swap right the first time.

Exedy stg 2 clutch, fidanza flywheel, b&m short shifter, 90k mile tranny, new lines, etc.

It was insanely hard for me to drive because I sucked at 5-speed as it is, but now I was forced to learn something even more difficult.

A week later, nailed it down. Never had a problem since.

1994 Toyota 4-Runner with a bad tranny.

It was pretty terrifying going up hill learning 5-speed in an SUV that pops out of 1st a lot. Didn't help that the car was always loaded with junk.

Ive only driven maybe 5 different vehicles. With that said the pedal on my friends Galant GTZ is insanely light and this was the car I was learning to drive which made it a little harder.

The most difficult thing i had to drive would have to be this beast, my friends old El Camino. Power steering would kick in and out.
