would my engine get damage if it was left out in the snow but nothing could get in to the engine

Probably not, but too little information given...
Is the engine complete and swapped into a car? If so do you have coolant in your water? That's the only real concern there.
If the engine is a long/short block on an engine stand, make sure all your intake/exhaust/coolant/oil passages are sealed off somehow. The snow and moisture will probably end up rusting any exposed iron. Same thing if it's a swap motor sitting on a palette, just make sure nothing can get into it. If you want to make sure nothing happens to it you'd probably bring it into the garage or at very least cover it up with trash bags and/or tarps... but the cold itself won't do much harm if it has no fluids in it, it's the water/moisture you have to watch out for.. Especially if you still have sensors on the engine.
check you coolant, if its green your fine.

Put a box and a tarp over it, then tuck the edges of the tarp under the box.
