View Full Version : Cold air intake

I've been searching for the past few hours and, cant find my answer. Well, my brother bought me a cold air intake for me, for my 1991 240sx I installed it this morning in this freezing cold air outside and as I took out the black stock intake thing I noticed there was a big hose under and, at or near the bend of the intake pipe thing. What my question is, is it necessary? The cold air intake I bought doesn't have the connection to that. If I just block off the hose or remove it, will I still be able to pass emissions? Every hose but that hose is connected. If I didn't make myself clear its the one thats approximately 2 inches in diameter. Thanks in advance.

Its most likely a vacuum line, if its disconnected its gona run like shit and stall at low rpms

dont take my word for it, i never had a intake so it might not be. try running it with out it being hooked up to anything. If it runs fine just wrap up the hose so nothing gets to it and call it a day

Please post pics. Your explanation is nowhere near clear enough for me to answer your question. There is an intake air resovoir thing that mounts to the radiator shroud on the pass side of the car, it has a large hose that connects it to the intake. If that is what you are talking about then just remove the whole thing (hose and resovoir).

Yes its the box thing next to the radiator. If I remove it will I still be able to pass emissions?

Primer gray 240sx. Steelies. =] Reason for so many squares is because I have my own opinion which is different from the rest and they dislike me.Also, maybe because of my age... I'm 15. =/ They give rep a lot, a lot of neg rep in these forums... Oh, the infraction is because I wrote: No.

Yes, just remove it. You will pass emissions.

like hustler said you should be able to still pass emissions if it did before you installed it should only be the tube coming from the top of the engine which allows oil gases to escape i have mine unplugged and it runs just the same as when it was hooked up but i havent had to emissions test it but it should be the same...haha sorry hope that helped

You wont pass the visual for the emissions test unless your cold air is emissions compliant.

Wrong. The answer was already posted, it's a resonator, nothing more.

I totally forgot about that, there should be a CARB sticker on it. If not, you FAIL!

Oh damn... So when I go to smog I will need to put the stock intake back on... Or is there any way I can get sticker for it?

I asked the same question on a different forum a while back. It is for a air collection box, whatever that is. I live in cali and still passed smog with it not hooked up so you should be fine.

What brand of intake is it? If it is pretty much ANY name brand then it is carb approved, if it is some cheap ass e-gay intake then it is almost certainly not carb approved.

If it is the box next that connects right by the MAF. It is the PAIR valve, Pulsed Secondary Induction Reed Valve. It cools down the exhaust to lower emissions. It's garbage, plug it up and be on your way.
