A tweeter would hit hard if you put a 1000 watts to it... Alpine is good shit and i had 4 alpine 12" type-r's. Dont get the squares unless u dont care so much about sound quality and are just interested in something that pounds. Alpine is good.

Ugh you guys and your bad taste.
You have to specify what you're going for - sound quality, or decibel level. If you're going for SPL, kicker 10s have more surface area and I believe still hold the dB record for 10s.
If you actually like to listen to music with instruments (bass guitars and low kick drums) and have them sound like instruments, then you're going to want to go with a more well-rounded speaker; the best one out, in my opinion, is the Image Dynamics IDmax 10" - they can be had for aroudn $350 if you look around. It'll bump with the best of em, while soundin sweet on "regular" music.
Now, if you're just poor, I suggest 2 Cerwin Vega IT10s. Very efficient (both will run great off about 400w), very nice SQ, and two of em will still bump.

One JL Audio 10W7 with a proper amplifier is all you need.
GSXRJJordan
12-24-2007, 07:17 AM
^^^ The 10w7 is inefficient, that's really my only gripe about it (that, and it costs just as much as an IDmax 10).
My IDmax gets along just fine with half the power that JL needs, and sounds a noticable bit better (not gonna say it sounds a lot better, but it is a little cleaner, a little more acoustic).
eqlipse ti.
phonix gold.
boston.
you will need a good amp for these. theres more brands out there but these are a lil better known.

Oh gawwwd. Eclipse = Japanese junk nowdays. Phoenix Gold subs = trash for SPL and SQ. Boston subs are inefficient and don't get very loud, while not sounding as good as any of the cheaper, more efficient woofers (CDT, ID, Cerwin Vega).

PG Rsd subs are nice for what they cost but they need lots of airspace, older eclipse aluminum(8100 series) are nice. IDMax is a great sub, probably the best i've used.

I love these random, vague questions. Before you even begin to decide on something, how about these?
Woofer location?
Size/type of enclosure?
Amplifier being used?
Power available?
Type of music you listen to?
Typical listening volume?
Other source/controls being used (EQ, crossover, etc)?
A $10 woofer may sound amazing in the right enclosure with enough power, a $2000 woofer will sound like fuck if it's just laying in the backseat. You can't even justify any of your decisions unless you're clear on your goal. Plus no one here shares your exact interest, what you think sounds good may not be what others think, or what you think is affordable might not be agreed upon. You might as well ask us what dishwasher we like best, or what type of grass feels best when walking barefoot on it.

Image Dynamics..... for when your all grown up :2f2f:
I knew these guys from their inception back in 94' when their business was across the street from mine in Torrance. They have probably won more audio competitions than anyone out there. They brought quality horn loaded compression drivers to the car market, and make incredible subwoofers.

I'm running a 10 inch $35 Lightning Audio sub I found at Wallmart. Running a Schoth (also Wallmart special) Line output converter, running to a Lightning Audio Amp (Had it lying around), and it all sounds pretty good.
It knocks hard for only spending $45 total, and maybe an afternoon of my time.
I think amplifer tuning makes the biggest difference. it's basicallly a track that plays at a constant freq of 60hz, and you fiddle with your amp and turn it up right before you start to hear distortion.
Worked out fine in my book

If you dont want to sacrifice trunk space get yourself an Infinity Basslink. May not be as hardcore as some of the other shit these guys are talking about, but I know what sounds good and what doesnt and I love mine.

Agreed. For a small out of the way "i just want some bump to my tunes" type sub, these are actually pretty good, my friend ran one for years. I always ran infinity perfects speakers and sub, but I was never very "hardcore" into it, as long as mah trance sounded good all was well.
GSXRJJordan
12-24-2007, 11:00 PM
^^^ Yeah the Basslink is the only "integrated sub" (meaning sub and amp) that I would consider... I'm not a fan of Bazooka tubes, etc. They sound ok, and although they don't get very loud, you rarely think "oh that sounds like crappy bass".
Statik I used to run an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12 in my first IASCA SQ car, wasn't a bad woofer with some clean power to it - after I went back to a vented box tuned to 32hz, trance sounded reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaallll good :)

Alright here's a question since I'm in the beginning stages of my sub box and I can just throw it out and start over... I got a solobaric for cheap and I'm building a box that sits in the passenger rear quarter but comes out a good amount into the trunk. Would I be better off putting a single JL round sub in the middle of the trunk integrated into right where that shelf falls off, aiming slightly up and backwards? Or is my setup just fine for all types of rock, rap, and drum n bass? Right now I have a single 8 in a truck enclosure layed down so it shoots straight up because I'm too lazy to finish my solobaric and it sounds good being in the middle of the trunk... is that the best way to go?

Read my other posts. Bass notes are low frequency which means longer wavelength - if you keep cutting them off by only giving them 6" before the first reflection, you're going to have a shitty sounding bass note (as well as less volume).
Put your 10" against the back seats, facing backwards, but leave 6" or so on either side for the sound to travel back into the cabin, and dynamat your trunk. Or, get creative and put it against the trunk wall, facing forwards, and take out your back seats all together... you'll need to fiberglass into the wheel well for this one.
Stop putting speakers in places that look cool, but don't make it sound good.

here's the rub.....
go and listen to several different brands at reputable dealers
(ie: not Bestbuy)
find what sound you like....
Personally I'm all about the JL Audio, Image Dynamics, and high end MTX (they bought JL some time ago) sound. Jl being my favorite since the early 90's

I only put it there thinking the waves would have the whole width of the trunk to travel... I'm not into the whole audio scene I just want to add some bump to my system. I'll go somewhere that knows so I don't screw it up

if space is an issue, then go with the amplified 8" bazooka tube 100w! that's what i rock and it's more than enough boom boom for me. this is by far the best bang for bucks in car audio. if you want your car to sound like it's gonna fall apart, then i suggest you go else where. but if you want clean bass, tube is the way to go. oh, did i mention it's cheap and affordable, too!? you can find these babies for $150, when they normally sell for $200.

MTX Does not own JL, nor have they ever. JL has always been independent http://www.mitekcorp.com/.
Go listen to the IDs and the JLs and the Alpines and see what you like the best then ask the salesman what amp etc. you need.

I pos rep for I.D. because they produced my own line of Subs back in 95. I developed a sub that used indiglo and it would glow to the beat with a mic circuit on the back of the sub. I still have about a dozen of them still in boxes, but they are pretty crazy subs. Still Image Dynamics specs 250W and 300 W RMS. Poly pro cones, butyl surrounds 70 oz. magnets. The subs were called Luminex, and i ran out of money because i was a better electronics designer than i was a marketer. Anyway, Eric Stevens (I.D. Owner) took alot of time to help me make these subs. Their subs are all assembled at their facility in Ontario
California. No made in China madness. I have met alot of audio professionals when i was trying to license my subs, including the famous Dr. Floyd Tool of JBL.
Image Dynamics has alot of passion for their products, period. I think i'm gonna have to pull one out a light it up. Got me remeniscing now.

If you want a 10" with some decent excursion, i would shop for a DVC "dual voice coil" sub. It is as it sounds, having two voice coils for twice the power. Look for excursion ratings in millimeters. The longer the throw of the cone, the lower the frequency you can achieve. Image Dynamics was one of the first companies to offer a DVC subwoofer. And they have an aluminum heat sink design that dissipates heat well.

Over the years i have and continue to only buy two brands of subs. Xtant and Exlipse. top of the line on both. all other i consider are a waste of money to me because both those brands i have pounded an eclipse for 7 years and it worked as good as the day i got it. I have been pounding the xtant for 5 with no problems either. that right there is proof enough for me having JPL, MTX, and pioneer burn out in a few months, and seen more fosgate come and go that i can remember with sub 1 year lifespans.
eclipse all the way, but i switched to xtant cause i got tired of 50 LB 12" subs that eclipse puts out.

I run an infiniti kappa 10" in just a sealed box and a 300w rms blaupunkt amp. I think the setup cost me $300 total and I can pound pretty well. I have the shit bungeed to the full size spare in my trunk with no carpet so vibration occurs at louder volumes, but it will shake all the mirrors to where they are useless. It's ghetto and not pretty to look at, but Music + turbo = audio dream

Most subs of the same size are going to perform well under similar circumstances... IE most 10" subs work well in a .75ft^3 sealed enclosure, which looks to be about what that one is. The problem is cabinetry - sound waves are effected just as much by their enclosure as they are by the speaker - and metal enclosures SUCK ASS at reproducing natural bass notes. Not to mention your entire chassis will literally vibrate with the speaker.
Then there's the issue I talked about earlier, with sideways-facing speaker designs - bass notes sound better when they're 1.5 - 2 wavelengths from the listener; a speaker in the trunk, against the seats, facing backwards, has its bass notes fire back to the trunk, then reflect forward and have 6 ft or so before they hit your ears. As soon as you reverse the phase of the sub to get it in phase with your front midbass drivers (which are on-axis to your ears), you get clean bass that sounds like its coming from the front of the car. THATS what wins audio competitions (as well as being enjoyable to listen to).

I saw the Infinity Basslink on ebay pretty cheap. I've always wanted a Amp/Sub combo but I knew I would never pay the money it would cost to put something decent in. I kinda figured since they were so cheap ad I've lived without one for so long it would prolly be worth it. Is the Infinity Basslink II so much better than I to warrent the cost of it?
I have a Hatch .. if that matters with just Alpine Type R 6.5s up front and a 260w alpine amp.
