View Full Version : Road Race _helmets_
For those of you in So Cal, where can I buy helmets? I'm going to a speedtrial USA event, which requires an SA-95 or better helmet. (NOT motorcycle helmet)
Which shops have helmets (I want a SHOP where I can try them on for fitment and comfort,) and where did you get yours?
From what I hear/read, Arai are just starting to make auto (car) racing helmets, and Shoei don't make them at all... my other choices are Simpson (?) and Bell (?) both of which I've heard very little about, except that they're "good". <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hmmm.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hmmm:'> I'd like to get an Arai if possible, just because they're so cool, but would "settle" ( <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':sly:'> ) for a simpson or bell.
TIA!

You're going to speedtrial!!! you bastard! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>
You should make an origami helmet. Like one of those dumb triangle-shaped, paper hats hahaha.
I want a helmet too!! so I can do autox... ahh.. i need a job.. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'>
haha... I can picture you wearing a newspaper 'helmet' trying to enter an auto-X event!! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> Where've you been Miggs? Zilvia seems so ... quiet without you, Esteban and Meowth! what happened to meowth, anyway?? Where's he been?
edit: DAYUM!! Looking at the price of Simpson helmets on line puts a sick feeling in my stomach. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'> The BELL helmets look substantially cheaper (less than half the price of Simpsons!<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> but that leads to many questions about quality and safety...

Stay away from SA-95, you'll only get about 3 years of use out of it before they won't let you use it anymore. SA-2000 is the current standard and most every helmet you can buy now will conform to it.
I know a place (thanks to HippoSleek) but I'm guessing you're not in the DC area so it won't be much good to you.
Check the phone book for "Automobile Racing Car Equipment".

Also known as Snell 2000 and most motorcycle helmets are SA-2000 certified, so why can't you use one of them? Ahh wells try here:

Snell has separate classifications for Motorcycle helmets. They're rated M-2000. Legal for autocrossing and maybe drag racing, but not road racing.

Motorcycle helmets have an M rating...M90, M95, M2000, etc. They don't have a fireproof lining or something that the SA rated helmets have. I think both M and SA are Snell ratings...so make sure it's SA and not just Snell. And go ahead and get a SA2000.
As far as where to go to try them on?....dunno...don't live in SoCal.

Bell is in Costa Mesa and Simpson is in torrance,
