we just got my fathers rb20det running perfect in his 280z.... im very excited that its able to drive. We have been working on this thing on and off for about half a year... mostly because of parts.
heres some pics
when he first bought the car.

The L28et just wasent working, so we thought of swapping a sr20 into it, but it would be kinda dumb to go from 6 cyl to 4 cyl, and the sound of the sr just wouldnt fit the car imo....

Rb20det TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

^^ would have beeb impossible to have the engine sit back that far without McKinney engine mounts.

Custom Dual pass PRC radiator.... took them 2 months to build this thing and get it to us.... UGHH

courtesy Nissan I/C pipes, and a SSAC fmic... it works[AUTOMATED GRAMMAR CHECK - too many periods were used, please re-edit your post to remove this message] had the only deminsions that would fit where it needed to go

the kinking of the rad hose has been attended to.... put a 45 degree elbow to lower the i/c piping.

finally cleaned up!

Hybrid Z members claimed that it was a simple drop in .... IT WASENT... you have to cut into the dash just to reach 1st, 3rd, and 5th without custom mounts.

we had the GTR 444cc and dropping resistor in, but the safc couldnt handle that kind of fuel increase, so we threw the stock injectors back in, and the safc in the trash were it belongs. HARRRRRRRRRRRRRR

and whats a car like this, without and exhaust like this....

Seriously though.. that car is fucking uber ill.

You post pics of interior, and a bunch more shots, yes you do.
: D

((sr)) kelly
12-17-2007, 12:11 PM
the interior is far from finished.... we are going to be putting in some real nismo seats, and a dash sleeve... its a plastic mold that slides over the stock dash to cover cracks....

Looks really clean, why not an RB25?

there is a problem with the DP hitting somewhere... i forgot.. its been over half a year since ive done my research.... the rb20 was cheaper, and it was a easier swap....

still sounds beast tho

very nice build. should of kept the stock 6 though. High comp builds on the stock motor are freaking amazing. They scream around the track.

((sr)) kelly
12-18-2007, 11:24 AM
i hate the L28... i just dont like old technology....

the Rb series on a whole different level, and trust me... this Rb20 screams too... lol

we have the GTR 444cc injectors and resistor pack, but we are waiting to use these untill we can get a 2871r and a PFC.... the car should be interesting after that

Kewwwwwyyyy

Cool car...take off the stickers and get some big fucking wheels.

Do you cruise Capital/go to Sheetz? A kid I know said he saw a car just like yours a weekend or two ago.

Very nice; this swap (and an extensive build) is on my list of projects to complete if/when I get rich. :D

My next investment, if I were you, would be a front facing intake manifold. :)

wow extremely clean 280, and nice build going with the rb instead of just restoring the L. glad you have a cool dad whos into doing that kind of work and has an interest in cars still! my dad is all about his 08 f350 turbo diesel and hates my s14 with a passion

Hmm on Hybridz noone mentioned having the shifter placed so far forward. I myself am thinking of doing an RB20 swap into my 240z, but am waiting to find a great deal for a Rb20. I believe Rick Wong on Hybridz sells CNC machined solid motor adapters for the RB swap. I was going to go that route..maybe that would solve the shifter issue? If not I'll go with the l28et and throw a holset turbo on it.

Also the 280z had a carbbed engine from the factory right? What did you do about the fuel tank?

Actually putting a RB25 in is not that hard at all. The only difference in cost is you can buy a RB20 cheaper. Though the engine(RB20) has less power and is more likely to be older and have more mileage.
My neighbor built a RB25 powered 240z. Downpipe does not hit anything. He did not have to trim his dash for or tunnel for clearance.
His car has the Greddy intake and a nice FMIC. I will try and get him to take pics of it.

Besides wiring the only thing he had to do on the 25 was put in a RB20 rear sump oil pan. His mounts were very straight forward basically a aftermarket urethane mount setup on stock engine brackets bolted to the stock crossmember. Clears everything.

Though I will give you and your dad props for a clean install and getting rid of that old piece of shit L28.

Tenchuu
02-20-2008, 04:52 PM
also if you are auto crossing it the Rb20 is better because it puts you in the under 2.5L category.

and that is about the only reason besides money that i could see the RB20 being better than the RB25

whys everyone hatin on the L28? yea its old, but it can put down some nice numbers in turbo and/or when you got a 3.1 stroker on it.

((sr)) kelly
02-20-2008, 05:37 PM
its old technology...

sohc, distributor, prone to electrical problems... and it has the intake mani and exhaust mani on the same side of the head.... poorly designed all around
