I hooked up my A/F gauge to my o2 sensor and being thats its cold here, it works fine, showing my current readings. But when the car warms up, the LEDS start to fade for some reason. They'll come and go when i press gas and let off. As if there was no power or it was cutting out.
What could cause this to just work when it wants too.

What wire did you hook up the A/F gauge to?
The stock narrowband o2 sensor will only show rich/lean. It's really useless. You need a wideband if you really want to see true A/F.

You hooked up to your stock sensor? That will mess up your ECU's readings and be a totally useless gauge.

Can you comment on how tapping the O2 signal will affect the ECU's ability to read a clean signal?

Depends on how he hooks up the gauge and it's quality. The cheaper ones have been known to clamp the voltage.
