i've been looking through the manual and they don't go into enough detail so maybe somone can chime in and help me out.
how exactly does the latch mechanism work when pulling the trunk release from the inside?
Same way a bicycle handbrake works.
The handle pulls a cable which runs to the trunk latch, and pops the latch open.
If your inside release isn't working, chances are it's a broken or rusted cable.
Or you have a spoiler that's too heavy.

Not always, or even usually the case. I know cause i've had to replace a COUPLE, and no bullshit, replaced one YESTERDAY on my s14.
The latch that is attached to the trunk often goes bad. HOW it goes bad, or WHY it goes bad, i have NO CLUE. However, i've personally had THREE go bad(or come on the car bad) on different s14's i've owned.
If you really want to see if the cable is the problem, unbolt the three bolts that hold the "catch" part to the inside of the trunk, remove the brake cable, then replace...(make sure your key works though...lol.)

well i'm in an strange situation were i'm installing a seibon cf trunk and in doing so i will no longer be able to use the key to open the trunk. BUT previously the trunk release wasn't always unlatching the trunk all the way so i can't check fitment of the trunk untill i get the release sorted out. is there a way to increase the tension on the cable? and how does the catch cause the trunk to release?

Here is my BITCH fest about S14 trunk
You know that little lever that you can push down near the latch so that you can only open it with a key? I think it might be called "valet" something....
It is made so that you can;t open the trunk from the handle.
Well, my awesome car decided that it wanted to start moving the lever down by itself (probably because of the age of the car and the many many many vibrations that it goes through everytime I drive it. So, me, well my luck, I don't have a key cylinder in my trunk, so the ONLY way to open it is with the handle inside.
Now, get my problem???
I got stuck so many times with a trunk that wouldn't open.
I've done drift events with a pair of wheels in the trunk and tools because I couldn't get it open.
How did I have to fix it?
I had to climb through my car, through the rear opening in the seats, and then open the trunk by hand from the inside.
Oh that sounds kinda hard?
well, let's make it better.
I have 2 bucket seats. Know how hard it is to maneuver into the back seats when you have 2 buckets in a s14? it sucks.
Oh what else? I have a cusco tower bar in the back that goes right through that area i need to SQUEEZE my body through. SO I would have to take that out first.
Then, my luck, there would be a pair of wheels in the trunk as well, meaning I had to try and push those out of the way (which was hard as fuck) and they don't move very much side to side.
anyways, i fixed it now.
bitchfest done.
