I'm swapping compressor housings on my GTiR T28, and the backing plate is held on by a c-shaped ring. Anyone have any tricks for getting this fucker off? It's way too rigid for snap ring pliers (unless I can find some massive fucking pliers, because mine aren't strong enough).

:(

You need those special pliers that grip the hole good. It is a bitch but you can do it.

You mean, different from snap ring pliers? Any idea what they're called? ;)

to remove or clock the compressor housing you dont have to do the snap ring. Just loosen the 6 bolts that have those moon shaped brackets. Once thats loose the housing should be able to spin freely.

snap ring pliers can work, but its better to have the ones that have a 90º angle on the tips.

the main c clip is a little hard to get out, just because its sat there for so long.

The trick is to take a smaller punch (that you can fit into the holes of the snap ring, and give it a good hit with a hammer, this will break it free, so using snap ring pliers will be a little easier. (ive used snap ring pliers, it CAN be done.

before you take it apart..pay attention to the angle that the compressor housing is clocked at, so you know all you're piping will line up nice like before.

good luck

it depends on the turbo..

larger framed ones like a t4 for example..has the bolts you're talking about on the back of the compressor housing. But, with smaller framed turbos, theres only the snap ring.

The GTi-R has them, as well as the Gt28R.

I have a GTi-R T28 thats why I mentioned to do it the easier way.

Majority of compressor housings are bolt on/off now.

F those snap rings.

Snap ON 90Deg Stainless pliers FTW on that.

I guess I should have been a little more specific. I've already got the housing off, just those 6 bolts is all it took. I'm swapping to an S14 T04B housing though, so I also need to switch out the backing plate, which is held on by the snap ring :)

I think I'll hit up Sears tomorrow and see if I can find some better tools (punch, 90* pliers) than my shitty little snap ring pliers to get that thing loose.
