2008 looks to be a great year for grip racing and s-chassis. Most of us from the irvine group are just about finished with building up our brakes and suspension so no more real excuses. Push as hard as we can N/A and maybe start looking for some power. So Nitin hopefully well be seeing a lot of each other at the track.

I think the car wieghs 2750 with me in it and a full tank
I will probably rig up some ducting for the brakes, already have a custum duct I made for air to to get to the turbo.
The car made 400whp on pump at 18, I might run 20 psi and 91 with a touch of 111 mix though ;) we shall see
It's my first event in the car at a large track

Hello I have had my eye on the classing in NASA for us that have SR20s. Im looking to do the Enduro at Big Willow later in the year . Where in the charts do you usually finish, & qualify IMO it will be real tough to be at the top of the charts in ST2 (depending on what cars show up) & for enduros SRs will be in unlimited (ES)

:2f2f: .
We do enduros just to do them and we've only done them twice, a 3 hr and 25hr. We haven't had much luck, the 3hr enduro our turbo went out within the first hr so we DNF'd. The 25 hr we threw a rod so we also DNF'd :loco:. With that being said that was the last time the car was in one piece so we're gearing up for a strong showing next season...hopefully. lol.
As far as finishing in the charts in ST2 we ended the races in 1st place for the first 4 races, Cali Speedway & Big Willow. At Cali Speedway we got lapped once in the race by Johnny Pag's Challenge Stradale but he lost a water pump so we ended up winning :keke:. We also had help with the American Iron guys as they slowed down everyone else. lol. Then came the enduro's...after that we packed it in not even half way through the season. 07 was rough for us so I'm crossing my fingers for 08.

It was nice meeting some of the Zilvia gang. I got to ride in SteveShadow's 400whp S13 and it was definitely a handful on the track. Nit was doing pretty good in Advance group today. Nice seeing you again Steve (Corner3) - who installed my ORC clutch 30k+ ago and still running strong.
Sorry to say but I think this is my last STUSA event - no timing, car to car contact, and few drivers who didn't belong in advance group.

Yeah great time.
I started getting sharper by the very last session, then on the last lap the track temps dropped pretty substantially (easily noticed with as much HP as I have).
Car delivered a little short for me on brakes and rear tire set up.
I will be fixing that along with some stiffer engine mounts and fresh subframe bushings, then It should be ready to rip again.
I enjoyed passing all of you on the straights in intermediate group too :fawk: haha

Thanks for the RIDE! Daryl! I will never say another bad word about s2000s now.
Also thanks for the brake pad advice I will look into those ( x-force? ) and compare them to Porterfields. The Hawks were garbage for my HP level.

had a damn lots of fun 1st session for me was a lil disheartening but started to pick it up after a couple ride alongs and driving adjustments. I got a long way to go. I need to dial in my suspension a lil other than that i had a blast.
Last session when it was getting cooler first lap i was braking looked behind me and saw my tires smokin. It got cold quick. The car to car contact really sucked especially since the guy was in our group.

LOL! Glad you enjoyed the ride. Lemme know if you need help setting up the car. A set of 255's all around would be perfect:2f2f:
I'm running Carbotech (http://www.ctbrakes.com/) XP10 (front) and XP8 (rear). I'm surprised how much pad life you get out of them along with low rotor wear. I've had these pads for at least 5 events now and they're still good. If you need to locate Carbotechs, give Evasive Motorsports (http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/) a call - ask for Mike or Justin.

Sorry to say but I think this is my last STUSA event - no timing, car to car contact, and few drivers who didn't belong in advance group.
Im kind of in agreement. There were clearly a few misplaced individuals out there.
I was in "Fast_Intermediate" and there were a few drivers with considerable horsepower that needed to be kicked down into beginner.
Sloppy lines, brake checking at random, not paying attention to the corner workers, etc . . .
Its been awhile since i ran with STUSA and at first i thought it was going to be a great change. Get out and drive and not have constant download sessions. But most of the drivers at this event were clearly not skilled enough to be out on their own.
/Rant
It was great to meet you guys, and I look forward to a season with a few more S-chassis out there. Was getting tired of being one of the few/only ones out there.
And i was glad to see Steve & Nit team up - Steve with his HP MONSTER and Nit with his (fastest sounding KA :eek3: ) Fully built suspension. You two need to co-op and build one perfect S13 :bigok:

Couldn't agree with you more. First couple of stusa track days, years back, I just had the feeling it was a Hot Import Nights track day where egos ruled the track over skill. Would of loved to go to this event just because quite a few s-chasis's were going. Again its lonely in NASA for us, so I hope more of you guys would come out.

I ran streets as my first track event with stusa it was pretty fun, This buttonwillow event seemed a bit chaotic. There were lots of cars out there and since there were not really any passing rules it felt like a free for all out there. Driving around the track and seeing all the dust clouds it felt like i was in the burning oil fields of iraq. I do admit i had a couple of track excursions but the main thing i wasnt liking was the fact of so many cars i felt the corner workers were a bit passive and in intermediate there were a lot of guys pressuring but not really knowing when or where to pass. It was a freight train of cars running wild. I had fun nonetheless.

I had fun and it was very nice meeting all of you... We had about a dozen s-chassis cars out there, much more than the other events I have been to...
Sorry to say but I think this is my last STUSA event - no timing, car to car contact, and few drivers who didn't belong in advance group.
Agreed... Without timing the only way to know if you did better was by how you felt you did on that lap... I prefer numbers and computer printouts...
The instructors were great (and free!) and helped me out a lot... I've got video to show his instruction and a couple of laps when he drove my S13 around the track for a couple of laps...
I think STUSA is good if you've never been to the track but there are better options if you have a couple track days under you (or are just a competitive person)...
Steve with his HP MONSTER and Nit with his (fastest sounding KA ) Fully built suspension. You two need to co-op and build one perfect S13
Haha... Steve's motor was very impressive... One of the fastest SRs I've been in... Incredibly smooth and sounds great but a handful to control... It's like the motor is in control of the car and all it wants to do is slingshot the chassis forward...
As much as Steve calls his car a "drag car"... I think it can be a ton of fun to learn on... Just need to invest in some springs... For the wastegate that is...
Or I've heard of some type of boost control ECU function where the ECU can determine what gear you are in and can increase boost in the higher gears... So when the ECU knows you are in 4th gear, it'll give an extra 10 pounds of passing power...
My S13 was running great and I felt pretty comfortable on the course... Got some great feedback from the instructor also...
I would kill myself if I had Steve's motor in my car... But I'd go out with a smile on my face...
Again its lonely in NASA for us, so I hope more of you guys would come out.
I'm interested about this... Maybe I'll open up another thread after I do a little of my own reasearch... Or maybe I'll PM/call some of you guys?...

Good meeting you and thanks for taking so much time in documenting all of us, Nit! Can't wait to get more pics from yesterdays event. And yeah, I don't know about going with STUSA again. Yesterday was so frightening when I could see so many possible catastrophic accidents waiting to happen..along with one that did happen. Way too many cars and idiotic drivers out on the track at the same time to be anywhere near safe.

i didnt know there was a fast or slow intermediate group? which was which.
i was being passed by everyone cuz i dont push as hard as everyone else. im just out there trying to run proper lines and not kill myself.
but being slow is not a problem there were many places to pass. but the asshole impatient people passing mid turn stealing my line are the kind of people that cause problems. and i really didnt like that. i let people pass me all the time and they did it safely. but some people were just flat out assholes.

Hello all, my feelings are the same here. As far as NASA goes lets say the pot is brewing. Hew tell me if I got this correct as far as HP : WT ratio for ST2 . S13 at 2600 lbs=304 hp or a S13 at 2500lbs = 289hp on a 245 DOT legal tire.Word to the wise STUSA is good when lots of people dont show up,looks like this event was pretty full,But damn I missed out alot of the peeps were there. Its OK Im preparing for 08

that was me in the White evo that hit the Yellow s2k....
I did all the proper things that could have been done.. you can ask any and all the instructors and so on that were there on track.. rumors were going on that im a stupid driver.. lol.. so funny.. but theres alot more to it than that..
atleast im ok... first accident in 5 years and ifrst accident on a track ever... lol so crazy... never had the airbags go off.. but atleast everyone is ok.. and yes i do agree.. definetly certain people did not belong in the advanced group.. and it was very chaotic out there wayyy too many cars...
Paul ill see you out there at the private event... with the other evo.. peace!

( Figuring he had gone into the dirt from under steering since thats where the dust cloud came from..) went into the cloud at maybe about 25-30mph in about 20ft of 0 visibility i see a wheel of a car just sitting perpendicular to me just blocking the way i was going..... i try to adjust but the split second was too fast... instead of directly t-boning him i manage to hit his rear wheel with quater panel and i hit my passenger's side front.. airbags go off.. car behind me was on my tail and managed to go into the dirt to avoid hitting me.. which im glad for..

We're running at 2750lbs. with driver and half a tank with max hp at 312whp and 255 DOT R/RA1's all the way around. There are other rules that limit your hp levels such as side skirts, body kit, solid suspension links, etc...its mess I had to have somebody calculate everything for me as I was getting the solution of 340whp. lol. The car actually only puts down 260hp so we're far from the limit. Hope to see you out there.

What about ppl contacting other ppl's cars?
Was there car contact in every group? or just the intermediate-fast+ ones?

I wish stusa would release an official statement because from the meeting they labeled the white evo as an idiot blowing by the yellow flags.
It doesnt matter how much seat time anyone has if they still can't run a regular track day safely. I know everyone is out there to go fast and learn. Maybe this is something that would be more expected from the lower groups but i think a driver in advanced figuring is just being stupid.

yeah when your on track your basically on your own. In hpde events there shouldnt really be any type of contact let alone a full on slam since its just running the track not racing.
If its racing then yeah sure thats a risk you run.
Im sure if you rear ended someone goin into pits or hit a parked car exiting from just being an idiot and not paying attention then it would be honorable to help with the damages.

Lost Hill is such a common place to eat crap...
For those who haven't been on the course it's a high 3rd gear right with an elevation change... It's blind going over the apex of the turn...
So you can't see what's going on on the other side until you are already half way through the turn...
Even though it sucks and whoever is at fault doesn't matter... I don't expect that to happen in the Advanced group...
I think that there were so many people who wanted to sign up for intermediate but ended up registering for advanced because there was no room in any other group... Maybe STUSA should open another intermediate group...
Or use lap times to move people from one run group to another... So cars that run similar lap times will run with each other...

You can only make the track so safe without detracting from the experience.
I personally loved stusa, it was a basic immersion course in driving hard. Some of the cars even in intermediate class were just far too slow.
I was wary of passing some people in my group because they seemed totally unaware that I was even trying to pass. They just wanted to cruise around the track taking in the damn scenery.
If you wanted to just "learn" I think beginner would have been the group for that.
Ill admit some of my indecisiveness early in the day in passing got a miata behind me pretty peeved, I did let several slower cars pass in the first two sessions and had sloppy lines but it was my first track event at bwillow. after Lunch I was rock solid, had a lot of fun chasing down the g35s and passing one of them at 'drag strip' before mazda star a couple times.
Next time I go I'm planning on fast intermediate. Might not be until Feb-March though with funds.
I still had a blast and I appreciated the chaos of it all

yellow flags dont mean hault and stop.. i slowed down of the throttle and even on the brakes.. i knew something had happened and i proceeded with as much caution as i could think of in 5 seconds of seeing the flag.. if it was a red flag i would have come to a stop as safely as i could but it was a waving yellow like many that day...
Flag: Yellow Flag
Signal: Caution
It tells drivers to slow down and hold current positions until further notice. The yellow flag indicates that there has been an accident, track has been partially blocked or unsafe. The yellow flag will remain out until the officials have determined that it is safe to continue the race.
tacotacotaco
12-18-2007, 09:03 PM
when i see a yellow flag that means theres danger and lookout for a potential accident. slow down enough to control your self incase shits on the track blocking you. I guess this can go on until an official statement from the instructors who saw what happened. In that case maybe we should ignore yellow flags since they were just waving em all day from people spinning out after all most of the time they spin off the track or theyre just dippin tires into the dirt off turns. Problem is that your in the mindset that your disregarding and figuring since theres been false alarms all day. Track events like these are designed to be safe and the moment i see a yellow flag i wanna know that no matter what i wanna be able to not come blind around somewhere and risk my car or put any kind of FIGURING into my decision. I dont wanna be an ass but there are no real excuses that you could come up with to hit a car at an HPDE event. i spun out in a turn with cars following close to me to actually look into my eyes and they didnt even need a yellow flag to know that we can hit, you at least had a yellow flag for 5 seconds so sucks you had to come blind over that hill figure they dipped some tires off the road, Think the yellow flag was a bullshit call because theyve been waving them all day figure other cars are doin so why not you and shit lemme drive through a blind dust cloud.
And this is the last youll hear from me posting about the contact in this thread.

look.
Maybe I am not "el hardcoro road racer" but in an event that is NOT BEING TIMED and is simply a track day, if you see dust or dirt slow way down?
Your trying to validate the idea of racing through a completely blind situation by giving an example of some other driver who fucked up on the same course?
Me and Nittin were in the car trailing you guys, we could see the dust flying up from 2 turns back! and we crested the hill after the yellow at 15 mph seeing the flag and rolled past you guys at less than 5. We were only 4 cars back too. There is no excuse for racing through a blind zone unless you honestly did not see the yellow, that would make a lot more sense.
Either way I hope you the best, it's a shitty situation for everybody involved. Ive crashed cars on the street enough to know what I was doing was not safe or out of my normal driving habbits so I learned from it. There has to be something that you take away from this situation instead of beliveing it HAD to happen.

25mph isn't racing through a yellow. Needless to say, in the previous track events I've done, I've seen yellow and I've only slowed down and kept an eye out. A yellow flag isn't a red flag. Red flag means stop. Yellow means slow down. And if he did slow down, then he did the right thing. Especially if it's a drop to 25mph. Granted, there's a dust cloud, but at times at leaves you guessing what happened and where the source of the cloud is. 25mph is pretty slow IMO. Some people can't even hold that speed limit through a construction zone, so I think he did the right thing.
Shit happens. Not everything is forseeable. It's unfortunate a car got hit but you take that risk when you go to any track event, race or practice related.

Haha, I'm sorrrttt of glad I missed the car paint swapping party now.
This brings up an interesting point tho (at least to me).
At other events I've participated in, yellow flag meant slow down to about half-speed, or less... considering he went from 70mph -> 25 mph, that's a lot imho.
Of course, if he slowed down more, maybe something could have been avoided... however, what was stated, if anything, at the drivers' meeting? Since I wasn't there, I don't know, but usually it's along the lines of "half speed"/"cruising speed" when you see a yellow.
Another potentially bad situation could have happened, similar to the video he posted.
5mph may have saved him from hitting the s2k, but he noticed a car behind him... that car may not have known to slow down that much & ended up rear ending him.
And to go totally off on a tangent, perhaps if the driver in the s2k clutched in ("both feet in" like they tell you every time you go out to a car event in regards to spinning out), he wouldn't have stalled out & be able to pull off the side of the road.
And lastly, things like this "shouldn't" be happening at all in the intermediate & up levels.
Glad you guys had fun tho ;)

We need the full s2k perspective. Then an official statement. A recreation. Some CSI jackets. eye witness testimony, and a blacklight because theres always semen at the scene. Well anyways looking at the damage from both parties it seems like a pretty damn good hit to bend the suspension on the s2k like that.
Next track event i should be rolling in with a full alignment and corner balance.

I think we just about talked the buttonwillow thread down. Maybe a new thread should be started to talk just about any track events and experiences for the so cal group.
On a side note i found my alignment spec sheet from hiros when i ran streets. That was back during early summer since then i dropped my subframe and put alum bushings in. I know that my alignment isnt the same anymore because my steering wheel is a lil to the right and the bushings made the subframe sit closer to the frame also some of the camber bolts in the rear i wasnt able to match back to original position measuring. It sucks i didnt make time for an alignment before the track. i know this time around i had way more pronounced oversteer. Hopefully once i know my alignments all good im gonna go from there to dial out my suspension. im also looking to get an ats carbon lsd 1.5 way and move to progress sways.

as for the s2k.. no he wsnt sitting in the dirt when he spun.. he went on the track... there was a trail of coolant from my car that trailed from a few feet farther than the right side away forn the middle of the track.. so he was a considerable distance from it.. if i would have gont into the dirt i would have stayed in the dirt.. and my car would have dirt all over it from the dust... i did talk to lenard the s2k driver and he did think he was in the dirt.. but we made it clear he wasnt.. none the less.. this thread is now dead..
again.. thank you everyone with all the advice .. please dont be afraid to say wuts up if you guys see me on track... !

Im running silkroads 8/6 i had them set i think at 4 clicks upfront 2 out back. Streets i ran them full soft with very good results
The guy in the white kouki was running tanabe 7 i think 8/10 at full soft. His car was def handling better than my car gripping a lot harder on the same tires.

This incident will prove helpful to all of us as we are probably going to be more cautious next time out.
Will you be attending the SOW event in the beginning of January? Will your car be out of the shop by then?
Maybe we shold make a Socal Track Junkies thread like the one we have on the S2k boards?

It’s funny how the guy claims 25mph and everyone believes him. Do you have pictures to prove it? If everyone saw the damage to the evo and the s2k, it is obvious that the damage was not done at 25mph.
Also, this idea of not stopping because of being afraid to be rear-ended is crap. If you were going 25mph as you so claimed, the car behind you would have been able to react and stop at that slow of a speed. And if you want to say that he was tailing you through a dust cloud, obviously ignoring the yellow flag as you did, then you are right—you both don’t belong in the advance group.
Let’s just call it what it is. The driver with "5 years of racing experience" thinks he’s too good to slow down for the yellow flags.
that was me in the White evo that hit the Yellow s2k....
Paul ill see you out there at the private event... with the other evo.. peace!
PS: ill post wut happened shortly...

i dont blame mor ryce for trying to defend himself a lil..
like edgar(articdragon) said you have to expect the worst going to a track event. its not like the guy forcefully purposely drove into the fucking s2k. give him a break.
if i was the one who hit a car that day and i did everything possible to avoid it and you guys gave me this kinda shit i woulda beat you up.
im not saying he should. he doesnt know you guys well enough. haha.
i spun out in the exact same spot. no dust cloud cuz i didnt go off track. and i saw mike coming right at me and like 2-3 other cars went into the dirt cuz of me. if someone hit me head to head. i wouldnt blame them. i would be more upset at myself for taking a SHIT line and going to fast.
so streets of willow jan 5 or something i would love to try and make it guys if anyone else has the time or funds. lets look into it. i dont think i can do the jan 11th thing if its on a weekday.
oh and my suspension on my car with apex n1 type v coilovers were set to like half way up front and half way in the rear. so i was running way stiffer then these people. and so towards the middle of the day i had set my rears down to like 1/4 the way
so 28 way total. 16 in the front 16 in the back to start. then 16 in front 8 in back. helped a lil. but i was oversteering all day and lost my rear a couple times.
this track i went with like 10-14 clicks up front and 1 click in the back and i was running way smoother. i had 26-28lbs of air HOT in my rear also. and my tire wear was still not to the line on my tire. so i wouldnt go lower then that.
but i have alot to learn. im too scared to go any faster but spinning on magic mountain taught me a lil about when to be on the gas. i need to upgrade my rear brakes and change my front pads from porterfields to hawk hp plus.
everything else was great. i was watching that sentra take turn 1 or 2 the long hairpin and i think i might have figured out a better line to take next time cuz the one i was taking suckED

You can't directly compare this. That is a solid barrier not a car floating in space.
