I have a 89 240sx. My automatic transmission went and I am looking to replacing it with an other automatic transmission. I know that my 240 transmission is a RE4R01A which is used in the 240sx 89-98,300zx 89-97 3.0L w/o turbo, pathfinder 88-98 4x4,929 92-95 3.0L,mpv 89-99 3.0L and the rx7 93-96. Does any body know if I have to change any parts on the transmission if I get it from an other car that is not a 89-90 240sx. I was looking to get the transmission from a 96 240sx at a local auto salvage but the auto salvage guy said that his computer shows the 96 240sx transmission not being interchangeable with the 89 240sx. Can any body till me if he is correct or wrong.

I can't answer your question, but I can offer you help.
First... you can not use a tranny from the Pathfinder 4x4, or anyother 4x4, or AWD.  Also, you can't use the 929, as it is FWD.
Now... for the real help, because a jar blowing monkey could have told you that.
You will need to find out if your car is a 3 speed, or a 4 speed, with overdrive.  I don't think that very many cars in 89 had overdrives.  If you don't have it, you can't use the tranny... or will have to do serious ecu and wiring work.
For my s14, a 300zx tranny will fit, but the tranny tunnel needs to be custom made, because they are a bit bigger, as they are made to handle more power.  Also, the bellhousing will not fit right, and you will need an adapter plate.  And you can't stuff the 300zx internals into the KA bellhousing.
I hope I helped a little.
