View Full Version : Do VLSD's lock in reverse?

I am guessing that clutch types will lock in both directions so that is not part of my question. Do VLSD's, more specifically the J30 LSD lock in reverse? I only ask because I park my car in the front yard sometimes and when its wet and I am in reverse It seems like only one spins and there is a real bad smell. Like a clutch burning smell, I know that there is not actual clutch in the VLSD so it could be my trans. clutch slipping but I doubt it. Just curious, Any input?

my NA 93 Z diff seems to open diff on me in reverse but i dont get a smell how long has it been since you changed the gearoil?
VLSD's need to get to a certain temperature in order to lock. just get a WLSD

They're supposed to work either way.
Changes are you diff is shot and needs to be tossed.

nani is right , isnt viscous associated with friction and heat, so the fluid is prolly not warm when you are moving your car from the grass, like its sat overnight or parked for few hours. makes sense. i know mine dosent need to be serviced , it still works great. id like to have a welded one to swap in for drift events tho

Prolly it, plus I think the smell is my brakes. A few days ago I adjusted my ebrake and noticed today it is rubbing because I was on an incline and not moving.

WTF is a WLSD.... If you're talking about a WELDED DIFF, then it wouldn't be a LSD....:ugh:
If that's not what you're talking about then I dunno...

since VLSD uses silicon fluid, then yes it works both ways, and it doesnt need heat to engage both tires, the heat just helps it out more
well, not that locking in reverse is worth its own thread or anything, gosh

it DOES need heat to work. Stand under the car on a lift with the trans in neutral. You can spin the tires in opposite directions by hand. Once the tires are moving at different rates, the friction causes heat to expand the silicone which THEN causes more friction to bring the tires closer to the same speed.
