so im not sure if this is in the right section.. i just didnt feel like it was a technical question at all. or off topic. but if it is please move it and sorry ahead of time..
anyways so i wish i had room for a trailer at my house. and wish i had money to rent a trailer for every event.. and im not sure that my car will make it to and back from every event i go to.. so i was thinking about one of these.. i see rv's pulling cars with these all the time.. how does it work? do you leave the key in the ignition so the wheels can turn? or do you just drag the car with the steering wheel locked? and has anyone used one? experiences?

if you gotta take the bumper off, you gotta take the bumper off. it's like 12 bolts...

I highly recommend not to use that it can be very dangerous, and really a dolly is almost just as dangerous.. So I would go with a trailer unless you have absolutely no other choice..
Matt from SD uses one of those haha
It blew my mind when I saw it...He was explaining it to me at ASB2, that he has to go and crank the motor every x amount of miles b/c the trans needs oil or some crazy thing like that
sounds sketchy to me...I have a full trailer and it works great haha

well if you pull your car in neutral for long distances only the bottom of the tranny gets lubricated so every so often you want to drive the car around to lube it all up. or you can just disconnect the driveshaft and none of that is neccesarry

My friend made one for his S13, S14, and the Z32...his is a little different and accomidates a lower facia that that seems to...
In the case of it being functional...yeah, he tows his S13 to track days and the Z32 to the drag strip all the time:bigok:

if you use that or the tow dolly, you should really disconnect your driveshaft. b/c all the stuff inside your transmission is working w/o any lubrication. (not everything but enough to make a difference)

UHaul Auto Transport trailers only costs $54 for 24 hours...
And it takes less than 5 minutes to load the car on and off... Front bumper stays on also...

ya it does and u it will work if u have a front mount... we welded on brackets so a tow bar could get hooked up.

I wouldn't use the tow thing you posted. My mom rented a room to some friends that were staying here for 2 years to work and take like 15 cars to Mexico, well on their way back to their home in Mexico they took 16 cars and like 14 flipped using that thing... Sad, I know but, its that shits fault... I wouldn't get it. The towed car and the towing car flipped... Only a 94 corolla and a Fort Ranger made it. Barely...

lol no negative... automatics thats true but not for manual trans.

Lol no negative... That goes for both auto and manual reason being that the cars not in gear so the top of the gears spin without being lubricated

^^ lol ok buddy i have been towing my vehcile to the track and many other drifters with far more experiance than me and they say it does nothing to it. And in the years of racing i have NEVER had an issue that occured to my vehicle because of towing it in netural to a track. im not trying to argue... i dont feel that it should even be mentioned here.

There's no fluid pump in your 5-speed transmission...unlike an auto.
The gears rotating are what moves the fluid.
Towing with a 5-speed trans, in neutral...is 100% OK, as far as lubing the gears is concerned.

Yeah when the wheels spin the gears rather then the drivetrain it causes the gears to wear cause its not supposed to do that. This goes for the diff also. The gears don't spin the way there supposed to when being towed at 60 rather then driving at 60 . Guess I could be wrong though

You are, quit trying to argue it.
The gears sit in a pool of oil, period. As they turn, they're constantly dipped through the oil and lubricated. If the fluid was pumped like in an auto, the breather would continually spit fluid since that's an opening in the case. An auto uses a pump and is sealed, therefore no fluid can leak out.

Hence the reason why you rarely see tranny coolers on MT cars
The fluid isn't pressurized; just sits in a pool of fluid like someone stated above.

i've used one with my s13. disconnect the battery and then leave the key in, in acc. bolt up and tow away.
edit: if you've managed to flip a car with one of these, chances are that you would've flipped a trailer too.

Depends how low you are
My car takes well longer than 5 min to load on a U Haul
And without wood 2x6's, I can't clear getting up the U Haul (even with ramps under back tire)
My frame rails would hit the center edges that come up between the ramp without them (maybe like 1-5mm clearance)
Stock bumper maybe
But if you have aero you gotta take off front bumper
My front mount piping also barely cleared (the front overhang)
Also I couldn't open my door, had to get in/out Nascar style, then go in from hatch and close the window back up
Not the best for lowered cars, but it does the job and is good since there is no mileage charge
But if you rent for a weekend (pickup Fri - return Monday) it is considered 3 days, so hard to just pay for one day
Also, you SHOULD use rear straps to the subframe because U Haul only gives you that one wimpy gold chain
I think a 4 wheel trailer is always the best way...dollies and tow bars are probably fine too, but just peace of mind I'd rather pay extra for a trailer

Just to chime in: my first S13 was an Ebay car and we had to bring it back from Gaston, NC. It had pretty bad knock so we couldn't drive it 6 hours. Towed it from there to Virginia Beach on a dolly with no incident...except for running out of gas on I85 South and holding up traffic for an hour because I'm an idiot, but that doesn't have much to do with gear oil. :D

No. I was barely able to get a stock s14 on and off of one. Huge pita and made me nervous the whole way home. Also do not attempt if you have a rwd automatic vehicle because it will damage the tranny. I towed mine because I knew the tranny was coming out for the 5spd swap.

does the car have to be insured if its being hitched? since its being rolled on the floor.
