View Full Version : This might be a Dumb question but, Damper Setting knob?

So I finally got my suspension pieces gathered up, but I was wondering as you can see in the pic below, which knob is for damper setting?

The HKS coilovers have a little knob sticking out on the bottom of the strut, and there's also a 14mm bolt at the top (which is normally where damper setting is?)

I'm wondering which is for the damper setting, and if it's not the bottom knob then what's it for?

i think its the bottom knob, the top is just the top strut nut.

Weird the black and gold coilovers for the rear has it up top, having the knob down there seems like a weird place to put it

Could having it on the bottom increase the strenght of the coilover where it mounts to the car?

aka being able to be solid vs. having a adjustment piece running through the shaft(on the strut). I guess I have never scene rears brake there, but have scene numerous fronts snap right there.

Also another question is, how do you guys go about getting the left and right side of the car the same ride height when you're lowering/adjusting the height of the coilovers? I don't have any like micrometer calipers or anything, do you just count the threads or kinda just eyeball it?

I usually have both my coilovers out of the car, adjust the height so that they match up then put them on.

This way I can see how high or low the sit on the current settings then adjust as needed.

just use a regular tape measure with mm on it... you could count the threads... i guess

Just make it all even before you install it then when you need to adjust, just loosen the locking perch and mark the thread and body so you can count how many turns you did already. Do the same on the other side with the same number of turns. I wrap a masking tape on my thread then put the mark there because it's black and I might miss the mark. Hope that helps.

eyeball it. adjust height by shock body length, rather than spring perch. measure from something objective. like top of fender arch. remember front and rear fender arches are at different heights, etc.

counting threads is a bad way to do it. even worse than eyeballing

for proper set up, get it corner weighed. but its not done for aesthetics, ride height may look a bit funny/uneven after corner weighing.

To bump this...

I was loosening and tightening that bottom knob of the coilovers, and it doesn't have any defined clicks. It just seems to get tighter as I turn it clockwise... and when I loosened it all the way some liquid came out... definitely don't think that's the damper setting

now I'm worried that my shock won't get screwed over, even though a very tiny bit came out

That might be it, they're HKS

I'm worried that since a little bit of the liquid inside came out yesterday when i loosened the valve, will it have any adverse effects?

It shouldn't hurt to loose a LITTLE bit of fluid.. how much do you think you lost?
What color is the liquid? does it happen to be neon Green-ish?

Lol.. pints?! If he lost a pint then he has a problem.

I'm guessing a TINY bit of fluid wont hurt. Did you hear any air rush out though?
