View Full Version : Who Lied to me! Wheel offset question
Bad40r7
11-30-2007, 05:55 PM
I have been reading up on wheel questions for a while. I ordered a set of wheels in 17x10 +35 offset, with a 275 tire. Put the wheels on, checked everything out and saw nothing rubbing. Put the car in gear and went to go for a drive when the car will go nowhere...Weird huh? Well much to my surprise, the RIM, not even the tire(275 is pushing it) is rubbing on my rear subframe. Tore the HELL out of the rim. Has anyone else experienced this? I was under the impression that it would fit from other wheel threads. Anyone else running a 10 inch wheel in the back with a 275? what is your offset?
BTW-This is for an s14 :)

I know that +25 comes really close to rubbing so no way a +35 will work. Not sure where you got your info but you must have misunderstood.

Higher the offset the deeper the wheel goes in, lower the offset the more the wheel sticks out.
Damn maybe someone should sticky that?

I have the 5zigen FN01RC in 17 x 10 and offset 35. I have 245-45-17 tires on them also. Never had a problem before. And the wheels sit completely flush with my rear fender.
Something to note though, between the rim and the subframe on my car, there is only about 3/4-1 inch. So you may be running too much toe in on the rear.
Different manufacturer of wheels may have different measuring systems I am guessing. I used to have some supra TT wheels that were 17 x 9.5 in the rear. The offset was 50 but they fit pretty well on my s14. They werent sunken in at all. The only problem was the hub size on the wheel was too small.

I don't know who lied to you, or where you read that info... most I read was rear you run *x9* +35.
My friend ran x10 +25 w/ 275 tires on her s14 just fine. Now running x10 +12 w/ 275 tires.
I wouldn't blame anyone but myself if I made the mistake of listening to some random post about what rim fits & didn't check carefully once the car was lowered to see if anything was rubbing - could also have easily just put the wheel on, jack up the suspension arm & check. (there ARE several threads devoted to rim offsets - mostly flushness stuff, but still, showing what you can run, should run, could run)...
*Also, are you sure there is nothing wrong w/ ur car and/or alignment? Maybe your car was in an accident...
From what I remember the x10+25 w/ 275 still left enuf room for comfort on an s14.
I have x10.5 +18 w/ 265's on my s13 right now (6 mm diff from your setup) w/ plenty of room in back if need be...

Post up some pictures of your wheel damage and the subframe, it'll be a lot easier to tell where you went wrong and what happened.

The title of the thread was more of a joke than being serious. I just read that the wheels should fit and now they dont. I wasnt blaming someone, i was only asking. it is dark and cold outside so i cant go take them off now, but i will have them off tommorow and take pictures. Im guessing that my toe is just different, because my wheels dont sit perfectly flush with the fenders, VERY close though.
Sil-I dunno what you are talking about or to. No reason to be an ass, i simply asked a question about my car and my offsets. Noone asking what an offset means.

11-30-2007, 06:33 PM
Don't worry about the flamers.
I'd do a quick check on toe though. You can do a BASIC toe assessment by measuring the front and rear of the tires in the same spot... For example, measure the distance between the front of the rear tires. Then measure the distance between the rear of the rear tires. Both measurements should be the same.
I really can't see why your rims would rub though. I'm pretty sure a couple peeps on here run that size on an s14.

Pics will come tommorow, its dark and you cant see anything. The Rim is hitting the subframe towards the front of the car. Pics will be up tommorow when i go outside to take them off.

If it's only hitting at the front, you have a toe issue.

All you fucking idiots who are flaming should do your own research before flaming.
People have ran the same size without an issue before. If anything i would call that a "safe" size. I'm betting on another issue...such as horrible toe.

I run 17x10 +35 out back with 245/40/17 on an s13. Under compression when you have too much camber, the tire will hit the spring as well as the body. Since I have a stretched tire, the inner lip has touched the body before but hasn't done damage. Lower the amount of camber you have out back or run a wheel spacer. Done and done.
pix of where its rubbing will help haha... but pretty shure ur alighment is at fault unless u have a 11 inch rim haha
and is it both sides?
Doluck
11-30-2007, 10:31 PM
I have seen this proble with other 17x10" wheels. Its mostly in the build of the wheel, how the lip is formed.
On 17x10's I go no more than +27 an dthey always clear. You should be cool with a 8mm spacer.
If you had went 18's the fit till around +35 them some start rubing. I had a kick as tool I mad up awhile back that I could bolt up and check back space and with clearance with the wheel off on a jack stand.... It worked pretty good.... but it grew legs and just walked off one day..

LOL i cant belive i could have been so stupid! I know absolutly nothing about cars, i bought the wrong offsets, and i didnt even hear my rim making noise as i lowered the car, i guess the jack making noise as well as the suspension recompressing may not have drowned it out, who would have thought! You are an absolutly retard. If you could, please tell me the other method to me getting my car back into its parking spot after i starting moving and noticing that the rim was rubbing? Should i have picked it up? I probably could have just stopped, in the middle of the road, blocked traffic, ran to my house, got my old wheels, a jack and a 21mm socket with breaker bar, and changed them right in traffic. How could i have been so stupid?

Get spacers.
Only way to solve this, is to check the toe as suggested and get some spacers if needed. If your tires rub due to the spacers, roll and pull the fenders. You could sell the rims for enough to put down payment on rims that would fit and chalk it up as lesson learned!:keke:

Check your toe if it is hitting in the front. I had 17X9 +35 fn's on my other s14 in the rear with all sorts of room in the back. With what you are describing it has to be a toe issue. Have you done anything to your suspension like adjustable arms or anything? I bet you screwed something up. We need some pics when you get a chance.

And how in the world would i POSSIBLE know without driving the car that they are rubbing? You are one stupid ass tool.
And i will take some pics of the rims in a few minutes, it just started raining so im not gonna go out and take a wheel off for pics of the rear subframe lol. I Dont have any suspension mods other than struts and spring. I do have a set of toe links upstairs that i was planning on putting on this winter, along with all new bushings and such. I didnt actually buy the wheels yet, i was only test fitting to see how they looked and such. So i didnt loose any money in it :)

I did hit my hazards and pulled to the side. But by that time, i was only mabye 50 ft from my parking spot. So i let it roll back. Damage was already done, couldnt have done any worse by letting it back into that spot. And i wasnt about to waste a AAA tow on that. And just food for thought, how in the world would the help? lol. They would still have to pull the car on and off the flat bed, probably the same amount i moved it just rolling back to my spot.

YOUR REAR TOE IS OFF. THE REAR WHEELS ARE TOED IN FROM YOU LOWERING THE CAR. FIX YOUR REAR TOE AND THE WHEELS WILL FIT.
Just in case anyone else feels like telling you the EXACT same thing I, and others, told you on the first page.

What do you think about the 17X9, +35 offset all around? I thought that these rims with the staggered 17X7,+25 didn't have enough deep dish lip so I ordered a set of 4 in non staggared 17X9,+35...... I'm wondering how well the fronts will clear since I only have a 1.8" drop in the front from stock, these of course are for my s13.

Some stock OEM s13 rims clear q45, and z brakes, aren't s13 rims a stock +40mm offset?

You ordered Sportmaxes? :barf:
Use the wheel Fitment Whore Thread or the Offset 101 Thread to figure out how they'll fit, how much a spacer you'll need, etc. etc.
98s14inaz, brake clearance depends on spoke design, and which face you have (depending on wheels), not offset.

usually after mounting a set of wheels you check for rubbing/ clearance issues

I'm not sensitive about the issue.
Entered a freeway on ramp at 75MPH. Had a few drinks that night (it was holloween), ran over some screws, popped the right front tire, mad understeer occurred, hit the freeway curb, broke off the tie rod, hit the freeway wall, drove 80MPH for 2 miles with 3 wheels praying to god I wouldn't get arrested for having alcohol and a reckless colission. Had my car towed once I reached safety.
Since then ordered the rims, installed TIEN TIE rods, installing the Q45 big brakes, and now a lot of body work. I'm a grand and a half in the hole from this accident, so the sportmax rims do me just fine. Sadly I only recieved $9.00 for recycling one of the FNO1Rc's

I have been reading up on wheel questions for a while. I ordered a set of wheels in 17x10 +35 offset, with a 275 tire. Put the wheels on, checked everything out and saw nothing rubbing. someone local in atl is running i think 10.5's in the rear or 11.'s or something like that.
hes got somewhere around +10 offset. with that width. youre gonna need wheel spacers. just put 15mm or 20mm spacers on there and call it done :P

for s13's
I tried it, it does not work on my car at all! 5Zigen FN's 17x10 + 35. Rubs REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM and frame. Car is quiet low, but has RUCA pushing the wheel positive, this may be the reason it rubs the RLCA.

Had my car towed once I reached safety.
in many countries, you would be considered mentally retarded.

I love how you post like anyone gives a shit what you think. I would LOVE it if you showed me where in the world i said anything about lowering my car. You are one stupid son of a bitch. Im glad you think neg rep does so much. One day you will grow up, get out of your fucking homo drift fad thinking your cool cause you can drive sideways into walls, and stop being such a faggot to everyone. One day, a long way down the road most likely.

i just had to re-quote the original post:
"I have been reading up on wheel questions for a while.
BTW-This is for an s14 "
hahaha what a recipe for disaster. ever since i saw the title of this post a week or two ago, i was thinkin "man... he comes HERE and tries to blame the folks on the forum for HIS mistake"
what comedy
you know what the nice thing is? you can always install your stock wheels. :-)

Yeah I agree^
The first time I read the title, I was laughing to myself.
Wheel fitment is something so easy and commonly talked about that anyone that fucks it up only has themselves to blame

But you don't understand... It's everyones fault he can't research things himself. I'm assuming he asked if they would fit, and someone said yes, so he bought them. Now he's complaining cause of his lack of intelligence to try and learn offsets! :goyou:

Again for the STUPID FUCKS that cant read, the thread title was a JOKE. The funniest god damn part it, everyone is blaming it on the offset parts, which i OBVIOUSLY researched since i got a good offset for fitting a big tire in the back(no way in hell ill run a stretched tire, absolutly worthless) and happened to have a alignment/toe problem. The problem has been fixed, and all is well. Thank all of you for your input, and even the worthless fucks that think leaving negative feedback is both funny and worthwhile.
Good day

WTF newb
Im a newb because i run tire sizes that actually fit my rim and wheel sizes that are optimal for traction in my car? I for one do like to put some power to the ground, instead of trying to run the thinest tire possible.
Good day

O is that why im a newb? I didnt even come close to ruining the rim. They are slightly scraped on the inside. No one would even be able to tell if i showed you the wheel and didnt tell you it happened. OO side wall flex, is that your reasoning for stretching a 235 on 10 inch rim?
That guy-You may be right, not all stretch may be bad, but i hate people that swear on it, and think when a tire fits CORRECTLY that it looks bad, or is not function. I road race and autocross my car, so traction is key for me.

I don't have 235s or 10's.

A mild stretch can be beneficial to grip.
Mainly there is just too much drama and hate circling around this thread.
If your problem is solved, you may ask for the Thread to be locked. There is no sense in continuing the fight though, from either side.
