OK for starters: my Sil80 is Red, pink, blue, and flat black. Money is very tight right now so a paint job is out of the question. I will be doing my own in February after I get my tax money. So in the meantime, I hate driving the rainbow car. I have 11 cans of krylon satin in the garage....Should I do it? I don't mind stripping it off later when I paint the car properly...I just hate to jump on the satin scheme bandwagon(been there done that), yet I hate the way my car looks right now...OPINIONS??????????
PS: I cant put the old front end back due to the fact that the panels are trashed...car accident...

Word. cuz if you spray it, you'll have to sand it down for prep when you DO get it painted anyway.
and in the mean time you can save up for some baller paint.

Just paint the front conversion parts, then you won't have to work as hard stripping it later, no rainbow, no problem. I've had mine (grrrr) like this for the pst year or more, I is too scared to paint it. Seriously it is really pissing me off.

alrighty...I have two cans of some red flake krylon crap. I might just spray the fenders since they already have the "custom" jdm roller paint on them, lol. Why do they do that? It pisses me off, the whole front end was the same factory color, but then they rolled on 3 different colors.

Legit Paint's like the last thing you should do. Spray it yourself, it'll look tacky as fcuk but I think multicolor is even tackier so yeah! Patience is key, or else you'll have a car that looks like utter shit.

Earl Scheib = $500 for everything, outside, trunk, door jambs, etc.
You could do that to hold you over until you can afford a better paint job. At least it will all be one decent looking color.
If Earl is too expensive for you well, maybe you shouldnt be modding cars.

I'd wait. It'll be worth it come February.

you have no idea how much of a pain it is to sand off spray paint
Farzam
11-27-2007, 02:12 PM
Idk man
I'd do it
Won't cost you money and it takes all but a day
Then you can repaint later to a real color
I'd do it if I had everything already, not if you had to buy anything.
I mean...would you wait to put on an exhaust for 2 weeks or would you run your stock one till then?

if you do it, actually strip the car. Remove the windows/panels/molding/trim. Dont take the easy way out and mask every thing.
Strip the paint off the car.

OK my Sil80 is Red, pink, blue, and flat black. .... I hate driving the rainbow car.
Just add one of these stickers to the car and tell people there is an intentional theme going...

How did he insult you? If you can't afford to modify a car , by saving, then you shouldn't put yourself in a financial bind. Its just a car.

be patient and just wait. Like everyone else said you're going to create more work for yourself in the long run. A buddy of mine painted his car recently and he had to sand the entire car to bare metal to get rid of the rattlecan paint, in order for the good paint to stick.

true but it makes a good temp fix and i've seen em last a while w/o fading. i rattle canned mien to get through the winter. it doesnt take that long to sand it all off and i didnt wanna just leave it primer cuz primer is more porous and the snow here salting here can do a number sometimes

Do it the right way wait until you can respray the car professionally.

doesn't rattlecan paint absorb water which can be bad for your metal
ThatGuy
11-29-2007, 02:52 PM
^Depends on what kind.
Primer absorbs water. If you get "Outdoor paint" in a rattlecan, you're a little better. Coverage and durability still suck though.
Again, just trust me.

How often do you have to bust out the can Barry to keep up with the car and keep it from fading??? I imagine it cant be as bad as black where it starts fading to gray/brownish fade...
OP, save your money, hell like already stated, Earl Schieb is cheap as fuck. If you can find a coupon for them, $300 and for atleast 2 yrs. Got a 7 year warranty so just keep coming back every year and next thing you know, you have 7 layers of paint on the car. :bigok:
ThatGuy
11-29-2007, 03:01 PM
The fading is inevitable, so i don't worry about it much. Mostly I break out a can to touch up door dings, scratches, and such.
I'll be doing alot of sanding and body work this winter. Especially if my ankle keeps me from driving a 5 speed for some reason. :-/

I think thats the only pro of rattle can, you get a chip, bust out the can...
Everything else is con...

Some cheap paint is that dupli-color laquer they sell at advanced. Pretty easy to use as well. It's alrady premixed, so you dont have to thin it. Just spray and go.
2 quarts should be enough to do the whole car and its 20 bucks a quart.
So 2x20 for base = 40 + 2x20 for clear = 80 + 20 for sanding discs = 100 + 50 for a spray gun = 150 and 250 for a compressor = 400
I'm not sure if you have a compressor or not, but paint isnt that expensive. I would highly reccomend taking off your hood and shooting it first and see how it turns out. make sure you get your gun setup correct before shooting it. small orange peel is ok, but when it really beads up, large orange peel is a mess and looks like dookey.

I have to agree with the comment about doing it right or not do it at all..i.e. you might be in the wrong hobby.
IF you rattle can now, you'll NEVER get around and get a "real" paint job like alot of people say, it'll just buy you more time and you'll keep saying its only a temporary solution but in reality its not gonna happen
if you're gonna be cheap, go get a maaco special for like $300. You'll spend $50 in materials at the very least if not nearly $100. That puts you 1/3 of the way there to a Maaco job, geez, why am I even talking about a Maaco job

If your broke and its a track car I really see nothing wrong with rattle can paint other then it looks like ass. cheap to replace and too keep track of couldnt imagine how shitty I would feel if I went off track like I do every 20 minutes and screwing up that expensive paint. But to each there own if its daily driven just take it to macco and prep the car yourself.

dont rattle can your car, its better to rock multicolors. or if you really need for it to be the same color, just sand down, and lay a few coats of primer.

why do people do silvia conversions when they can't afford paint? looks ghetto, not "jdm tyte".
just sand all of you paint off, right down to bare metal. saves weight. Then you'll have half of your prep work finishes when it comes time to do a real paint job.

crazy mixmatch cars look hella good anyway.
