View Full Version : side skirt exit exhuast effects?
slideways2004

i tried searching but didn't come up with anything. i want to build a super short exhuast that exit out the drivers side side skirt. right after the front wheel and thru the side skirt (uras) what are the effects this short exhaust will have on my engine? will it feel like a turd b/c of no back pressure and short piping? will it spool up faster?:yum:
p.s. engine is s14 sr/t28. piping would be 3"

You plan to run 3" piping under your frame rails?

Sorry. The picture is much larger but photobucket resizes it to this size

How hard is it to cut a fucking hole in your sideskirt and mount a piece of metal?
Why don't you just get straight pipe.
Stop trying to be different.

exactly, its easy as fuck. buy one pre bent pipe. weld to flage. bolt up. cut side skirt, make metal plate and rivet. done! i'm just asking how will my turbo spool be affected? faster? slower? same? i'm not asking how to make it

Somebody should build a Sil-truck or Sil-camino (whatever the hell they call those hatches converted to little trucks) and put an exhaust on it like that! ROFL!!

dual 2" or 2.25" or even 2.5" would fit nicely under the frame and give you plenty of clearance to lower the car a lot and not bottom out.
side exit flames FTW!
stupid thread FTL!

the only people i know who run their exhuast out the side are people who race there car at the track because it is crazy loud(borderline ignorant).... sounds cool though.
if you really wanna be cool......
do this
http://www.driftworks.co.uk/images/IMG_2222.jpg
P.S it isnt so easy either.. look at your frame rails and think again. you need a professional to fab it up

if your serious. oval piping.
like my downpipe.
this thread is retarded
you wont notice a difference.
just straight pipe it out the back

i dont think a 2 inch will fit under my frame rail.... i looked at doing this before just cause it looks cool. Turned out i didnt really wanna cut my car up that much.

not under the sub frame
through the interior
out the sail panel
!Zar!
11-26-2007, 08:20 PM
Just cut the frame rail where it's in your way. Then send it out the side.
More hassle than what it's worth.
Front to back is easiest.

if you really want function come off the turbine,
angle up about 75*
straight for about a foot (thru the hood),
end.

just stick with a front to back exhaust, less work, dosen't look as cool as side exits haha.

I did a side exit but it was right b4 the driver side rear wheel.....clearance was ok seeing as how i wasn't slamed on the ground....but if i were to do it again i would use the oval tubing...but that costs a arm and a leg...my friend now uses the side exit i made on his coupe, his car is much lower and that thing scraped everywhere...maybe he'll post a pic and comment...ohhh and i didn't just run straight pipe i used a apexi resonator so it wouldn't be so loud

Straight out the fender or angle it down right at the frame rail and shoot it out the side

Not sure why the flaming, this is something not really talked much about, interesting question!
I have thought about it a few times, thought about taking the side exit exhaust of some of the mustang models, that have the square tips and then weld to my down pipe,
but i would really prefer round pipes though.
so never went with it!
Do what locodrftr did, maybe use dual smaller pipes, should be fine,
then post pics!!!

Why dont you route the piping out of your steering wheel so you can smell your delicious sr20.
Full-Lock
11-26-2007, 09:46 PM
besides
side pipe is played out on street cars anyway
ricers in civics, sentras, and neons all trying to be 'different'...so they get a sidepipe
done a million and one times

11-27-2007, 12:10 PM
^^Yup.
I always wanted dual 2" out the side just before my rear wheel. I'd probably notch it and do a little welding if I had to. With a resonator and/or a cat in it, it shouldn't be too brutal loud.
Maybe sometime.
To answer the OP's question, your turbo might spool a little sooner. That's why turbo drag cars run a pipe straight out the side of the front bumper. The best exhaust for a turbo is hardly any exhaust.

squidd you know you want that for idiots on the 10 and 60 fwy.
More than you know.
The logistics of routing that thing through my cabin right behind my seat would be too much for me though!

Clearance is an issue i had to raise the car an 1" in the rear so i wouldn't hit the freeway reflectors. It still scrapes when i go up driveways, but the flames that shoot out of it look awesome at night(specially when people look at your car and think that is going to catch on fire or something)

i don't care about street stuff, its not a street car. a sweet infiniti takes care of that. looks like some people had it exit in front of the rear wheel. i was talking about right behind the front wheel. i'll go take a look at my car tommorow and see what is possible (main reason for posting this thread) my car is in storage about 35 miles away from, so i can't exactly go look at in my garage.
plus this would make people stay away from my car b/c they don't want to get burned. then my car can actually look decent b/c of the 10 ft. rule. haha

or you should do what muscle cars have, theres an exhaust system you can buy that you can switch from side exhaust to regular exhaust with a flip of a switch.. yeah its over kill but its coollll
its not this one but its something like this, its headers then theres a y section that one side goes to the side of the exhaust and the other goes to a regular exhaust
i saw it on a build show on the speed channel, it was cool, because he had a rusty crappy looking exhaust in the back, but a hidden side exhaust, keeping that "sleeper" look

My muscle truck builder buddy kept telling me about that while we served in the MArines, its not a switch, you have to pull a lever, it shuts the stock exhaust and opens the straight pipes, he had it on his supercharged old ass chevy truck!
I searched for it, but wasn't able to find it!
any muscle car guys out there know the name of it!
or company that makes it?

that kit is over $500. if you get aero and like 17s you won't have to be as low. and you will have better clearance. look at sasha's build up. blue road race s14 spitting flames.

It's called an "Exhaust Cut Out". They are available now-a-days in both manual (pull cable) and electric (push button) styles. Of course, they are illegal to run on the street, so install at your own risk.
Electric (More expensive)

I cannot believe someone had to explain what an exhaust cut-out is. I guess all of us cant live in the south, where malibus and mustangs and chargers and shit with these are seen daily during the summer months.
