I have seen on the forums here that you can put an SR20de FWD engine in an 240. It seems the block is tapped for the mounts, its just you need to get an adapter for the tranny, along with the issue of ignition. Here's my question.
If you take an Sr20de (from say a 200sx se-r) and put it in a 240sx, would it pass emissions. Yes, I know if you turbo it, it won't. But if you have to go to the "ref" even it its turboed, its a lot easier to convert it back to N/A than to swap back out the SR and put the KA back in.
I know its not a cost issue, I am guessing it will come out about the same, because SR20de's are a dime a dozen, but after building it up, the adapter plate, tranny, and engine management, it would be "close". But you wouldn't really have too much to worry about the emissions.

Its basically for the reason that you can go to the emissions facility and not sweat it. But on the same token, I do "try" to help out with emissions, heck I do have a cat on my SR, w/o it pollutes 400x more.

Changing drive wheels is not considered an approved configuration because you will have to change the exhaust manifold.
Since there was no RWD SR sold in the US, the exhaust technically will not pass EPA/CARB.

depending on where you are, its not so much numbers, but the fact that a motor that did not originally come in the car is in the car.

hmm sr20de...seems like a good idea, but what if you were to get carb legal exhuast manifold and then work off that would that be okay?

why dont you just turbo the ka? Basically it would be the same shit, but you wouldnt have to buy a non turbo sr.

Well, the Sr's are more "rev happy", a bit lighter, more aftermarket parts, and I believe sits a little farther back behind the wheels and get better mileage.

still for the objective, might as well turbo the ka.

This is incorrect. The EPA provides a safe harbour provision whereby you may replace the OEM engine in the car with an "approved configuration" from another car made in the same year or newer.
Every state who likes federal highway funding honors this provision.
In order to get the "approve configuration" check, everything must be original from the factory on the donor engine.
To the retard who neg repped me because I neg repped you for making stupid comments, don't make any more stupid posts that contribute nothing to the forum. Take that crap to Off Topic or Chat. That goes for everybody else as well. People don't ask for stupid comments. They ask for facts. If you're too stupid or ignorant to know the difference, don't hang out in tech talk.

With a little bit more research I've found that here are the issues to contend with (there may be more, if anyone cares to chime in), I still might try this one day if I get more info, because it would be a completely emissions legal SR20 swap.
- Distributer/ignition system (firewall clearance issues)
- Transmission (maybe adapt to Z32/z33?)
- Intake/Exhaust Manfold
- Exhaust downpipe
- CARB legal SR20 turbo kit
- Coolant Lines
- Motor mounts?
I know this may not be the cheapest solution, especially if you build up the engine, but in the end, if you do build it up, you will have a strong, practically new engine, strong tranny and the big thing, COMPLETELY EMISSIONS LEGAL, so no worries on the ref, or you Cali guys.
