View Full Version : Longevity of Aftermarket Exhausts?

Quick Question.
Anybody have any experiences with having to replace an aftermarket exhaust due to corrosion, etc? I'm really looking into the N1 Dual, but I'm not too sure about the "titanium coating..." of the piping. I want this to be the last exhaust I ever have to buy. Are full stainless systems the way to go in this regard? Or am I just being overly cautious...?
P.S. I live in New England, so the exhaust will be hammered by snow and salt about 4-5 months of the year.
Thanks.

ahhh this is a hard one...go with better known companies when buying an exhaust. not cuz they are an opinion but because they have the level of expertise. comps like tanabe are just wannabes in the game. Greddy, Apexi, HKS, etc. are from japan and they experiance harsh conditions too. so they know how to make components. and as far as rusting...my real knowledge about stainless steel is this.
my sister's husband went diving with a stainless steel knife. brand new and he didnt even use it. when he got out of the water and after a few hours he took his knife out of the holster...guess what he saw...rust marks. so steel is steel it will rust...stainless just slows the process down...nothing can stop mother nature from destroying things.
titanium coating? never heard of it...why...because it would be that of like coating silver with gold. it wears off. the only real way to get around from rusting out is to go with a titanium exhaust. or even this...before you install the exhaust, spray paint the piping. and do this every year. that could save you alot.
well hopefully this helped some how.

Stainless stell will rust after time but the apex-i n1duel is a great exhaust.I love it i noticed a big difference from just a cai to adding the catback.MY exhaust was used and has some rist on the pipeing already but when i am not to lazy i will take it down and problely repair it by sanding it and painting it over again.Nothing is safe .But you have at least 5-8 years before any real problems happen.

Thanks for the input guys.
I figured I'd be all set with the A'pexi, but it's just the shrewdness inside of me trying to justify all of the money I'm planning on spending. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

First off, the idea of "stainless steel" is that it inhibits the production of rust. It never was designed to not rust...impossible. It's supposed to rust slower and the best thing is that you can usually just take some stainless steel cleaner and wipe it off.
The "titanium coating" on the Apex'i exhausts is a purplish powder coating that looks good and does a nice job of protecting the exhaust. I've had my duals for about 18 months now and they still look good. The bolts are rusting, but the rest is OK. I need to clean the cans though...the welds are corroding a bit....
