My engine came with cams already on it that no one knows anything about. They need to be adjusted/fixed. I'm interested to know what anybody thinks - Is it worth it to have a shop try to adjust the unknown or have them put new ones on? The car is at the shop now.

You should be able to look at em and find an logo or somethin somewhere.
If not run em and see how the motor does. I'm not sure what you mean by adjusting em unless it came with a set of cam gears. If you talking about reshiming than I suspect you would have to do that with new cams as well.

yeah - it came with cam gears - they're off. I've had a couple guys look at it and that's the problem - apparently they're so bad it's undriveable.

ah ha! sweet!

The car is at a shop right now and being "diagnosed". The guys are gonna check it out and see what they can do but if they can't fix it (or fix it for a reasonable price) I am DEFINITELY gonna want to trade. I'll send you an e-mail when I know. thx

I can't believe I'm reading this!!!

First of all, Do you have cam gears OR cams? Or both? How do you know they're out of time? What could've caused this? From what I've read, it sounds like someone put them in backwards!! Need more info!!

Why not just set the cam gears back to Zero?

Or just set everything back to TDC and use the cam lobes as a guide to where they should be. It's just trial and error. It's not that diffucult.

ok - let me see if I can explain this. I bought the engine with all the mods - the guy had the full car in his shop - not just the front clip and it appears to have been raced hard in Japan. So it has both cams and cam gears and all info on settings etc. are unknown. My friends and I did the swap ourselves and got it "running" but that is the limit of our know-how.

If it's just a matter of testing it and playing around with it like you say then that's great - I don't WANT to go back to stock cams - I'm trying to keep it as raced out as possible but I need to get it running smoothly and everyone that's looked at it has given me a "doom and gloom" verdict.

Timing gun + allen wrench is all you need.

More than likley they're HKS 256 degree cams, with what ever cam sprockets you have. Should be a cinch to get it running right.

This is what happens when you take you car to a shop. They usually try the most expensive option first. This is just my speculation considering I don't know how "freindly" you are with your shop.

Seriously though, you probably have a bad A** set of cams. Don't throw them away just yet.

I swear when I read it I though he said rice. I damn near fell off my seat until I realized he said race.

Thanks for the info. Needed to hear that!

Yeah - I'm positive whatever the cams are they are bad A**. Not bragging (I promise!! but the whole engine is pretty bad A**. It's just taking a lot of time and patience to get it running up to par. It sounds like a V-8 monster not a 4-cyl.

hahaha - I should scan in a pic of my car - it is so j-spec it's not even funny! - zip ties all over, ghetto custom holes in the bumpers, hand-cut vent in hood

Just drop me a e-mail if you want to trade. I have 3 sets of stock cams, one set with out of a 97 S13 blacktop with very few miles. Offer stands as long as you need it to. No biggie either way. Let us know when you get it running right though!!

I'm actually very interested in what your hood looks like. See if you can scan a few pics when you get a chance.

will do. the pics I have now are mostly of the swap and the headlight conversion (in process). As soon as I get her back from the mechanic I'll take a good hood picture for ya!

It's a fiberglass vented hood (came w/ the car from japan) with a hook on the left side and a custom built vent over the intake on the right.
