Ok.. I need a little help here. My 90 240 is having some interesting problems starting and driving.

Starting problem: Happens occasionaly. It fires up and immediately dies. It won't start again unless you let it sit for a while. I've come to the conclusion that it is flooding itself due to the smell of gas. I had it strand me at White Castles the other day and not start for 30 minutes. I finally got it started once I pulled the fuel pump fuse. It fired up right away then and ran for a good amount of time before it died from lack of fuel. Put the fuse back in and it fired up and ran fine. This is happening more frequently now.

Stumbling problem:  lately it's been having an interesting stumble/studder/pause when hitting the gas. It can do one of the 3. The most frequent is the pause.. I will hit the gas, it sounds like it's attempting to increase RPM but it won't. Then all of a sudden it jerks and pulls like normal. Other times I can floor it and it still won't move. I have to let off the throttle and get back on it a couple times before it jerks and starts pulling. Other times when I hit the gas it will studder or stumble or sometimes bog and then pull fine. I do notice it seems to do it more when it's wet. I was auto-xing it this weekend and it kept bogging when I'd hit the gas and it made me quite angry.

My ideas: I'm going to clean the MAF, the TPS connectors, the TB, and replace the distributor (might be the connection to the wet weather problems???). The car has new plugs, wires, fuel filter .. so I figure this is the cheap way to start.

Any ideas what I can do??

happened to me when my spark plug broke and it got wet
do a tune up
get spark plugs, spark plug wires, change the fuel filter, and clear your MAFS and check the wiring on it

I've done all that except clean/check the maf.. that's on my list of things to do.

I jus replaced the starter and now I am having simial problems it starts and everything but theres to much fuel goin in and it bogs down when ever I get on the throttle whats the dealio? plus I put on a air intake to could that be a problem?

I have the EXACT same problems on my 89 240 and am yet to figure out a solution, so I'm hoping someone has one. I spent most of today looking for the problem. Gunna get a fuel pressure gauge and test that. ECU also gave me a bad engine temp sensor code so I'm gunna replace that (could that be it?). Guess I'll get a new fuel filter and clean out the MAF, TB, check wire resistances and grounds. I usually eventually get it started if it dies after a few tries, but I have to run the starter for 10 - 15 seconds and then it has a REALLLLY bad start up, but it does start. BTW, anyone know where to get a simple fuel pressure gauge? For some reason no where has had one (at least for fuel injected cars).

You car says *cough cough* needs coolant temperature sensor check/replace. So you go and check for fuel pressure? :mepoke:
How about try the CTS first, then check for fuel pressure? :keke:

Anywho, good luck and hope you fix it.

Welcome to two years ago

By engine temp sensor I believe you mean Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS)

Eh, I dunno, I just know the ECU gave me code 13 which is Engine Temp sensor in manual. Is that the same as the coolant temp sensor? Being 16 and this being my first car (rebuilt engine) pretty much everything that comes up is new for me so i figured I'd search instead of making a new post ;) (although I didn't realise the original post was made 2 years ago, oops). At any rate, I'll figure out if the engine temp sensor is what's causing it when I put a new one in tomorrow. Fuel pressure idea came from my Dad as a guess before I found temp sensor code this afternoon. Only way I'll learn to fix things myself is ask questions ;).

Any of you with flooding/restart problems should check your cold warm up (aka fast idle valve) solenoid and connection. While your at it check all electrical connections for corrosion.

The fast idle valve sticks on without ecu control and causes flooding/restarting/rich issues.
